I live in Virginia and just got a new job as an independent contractor for VDOT. I work on their property in their building though. My question is whether or not it is legal to carry on or in state property? The building has controlled entry and exit points, but I'd rather not leave my revolver in the car all day. Also, the position I accepted has me being the middle man between my boss and the very unsavory people that work for the same company I do (i.e. who comes in late, who's doing what... yeah I'm a stoolie, but it's paying the bills); another reason to retain possession of my gun throughout the day (a decent little hike from the building I might add).

I'm not looking for moral or ethical answers here, just the legal side. If you're going to spout off your opinion about how I shouldn't accept a job that brings up such concerns, or how I should sneak it through anyway, always armed always vigilant mumbo jumbo. I just want to know if there are any legal ramifications from carrying a CCW on virginia state property.

Thanks.

I am willing to bet that there is a 99.9% chance the State of Virginia is going to prohibit you from carrying a weapon on company time regardless of where you are. Did you get an employee handbook or sign a contract? It should be spelled out in there.

I don't work for the state of virginia. I'm contracted through a private company to work at the VDOT (department of transportation, by the way) complex. No handbook or anything that would tell me this is a no-no.

I've been a state employee for decades. It is against personnel policy for employees to carry weapons on state-owned property or state rented/leased property. Others can (in most cases), employees can't.

(So the question is, on my day off (every Friday) can I carry into a state-owned liquor store or the DMV?)

I would guess that as an independent contractor you are considered to be an employee, but short of making some calls I don't know how to prove it.
