I've been holding my rifles for cleaning with just my hands for many years, and I thought that perhaps it was time to get some 'support'.

I have seen several 'cleaning centers' or vises that hold a rifle (and some cleaning supplies) for just this purpose. Does anyone have any experience with any of them? Do you like them?

I can see where these vises may help, particularly with a traditional or hunting configuration rifle, such as a Rem 700 or Browning BAR. But what about for an HK91, or FAL, or AR15; or any of the 'assault type' rifles that usually are disassembled for cleaning into two major components plus a few smaller ones? Are the vises of any use?

Thanks - your inputs will be appreciated!

I have a really neat rack for cleaning my ARs . Imagine a 1x4 slab about 2' long. Flat on the floor. At one end, a 1x4x5ish is attacted at a right angle. With one has a cut out for the barrel. About halfway back, in the center of the 1x2.5ishx4ish that is perpendicular ot the one with the barrel cut. It has a dado cut that coinsides with the mag catch in an AR magwell. Open the rifle, put the center wood block in the magwell and press the mag release button as its going down. It clicks on and the board on the end supports the barrel.

I have the one from MTM Case Guard. I like it a lot. So far it has accommodated everything that I have(FAL, .22 rifle, AK).

The 2 holders are adjustable, there are 2 slots on each side of the main box for the holders to go into. There is a big bin in the middle of the box. On one end there are 2 round holes for holding items like a bottle of Hoppes or oil, a couple of rectangular slots as well. On the sides of the braces there are a few hooks that you can put your cleaning rods on.

Overall it fits my needs well.

It was inexpensive, which is a plus, takes down in seconds, easy to clean. It's simple and it works for me.

Check it out here: http://www.mtmcase-gard.com/products/shooting/gunm.html

Steve, Any way thaat you can show us a pic of that?

Nando, Any support is better than none. The long barreled uppers work out well in the old "Pro Vise" but the shorter ones are a WRASTLING match.

I think so. I'm heading home in a minute, and I'll try to do it. Don't know about posting a pic from home though. Do I have to host it somewhere?

Steve: Digi-cam or scanner, get the picture into "My Pictures".

Then, when you have the THR posting window open, after you type the text, click on the "Browse" button to attach the file. That will open a window and you get "My Pictures" in to the title line and then click on the photo you want to put here. After that, in your window, click on "Open".

(I've occasionally had to click and double-click and generally futz with things to get it to do righteously...)

Then back here and hit "Submit Reply", et voila!

(I guess I'm answering the question I think you asked. :D)

I bought one from Wally World. Plastic, adjustable, works for me. It has enough room to hold patches, jags, rods, etc, etc, etc.

One of my best overall purchases. I think it was $20-$30.

Ditto on the MTM Case Guard "Cleaning Center." I use it for cleaning chores as well as for bore sighting rilfles. Best $20 I spent on a cleaning item.

Ok, I will try this. I hope they're not too big. I took one without the rifle and two with it. Credit goes to John Holliger for building this. Its a simple design, but I have no woodworking tools nor experience.

Another MTM owner here. Worked great for any gun I have put in it yet. Well.....Except an 82A1. Just couldnt make it fit. :D

Yet another ditto for the MTM Case Guard. I bought it this weekend. It works well for me, even works well as a sight-in rest.

This one's made by Action Products, picked it up at a garage sale for a couple of bucks. It has another half with a carry handle but I took it off because it took up too much space on the bench.

Steve - Yes! Thanks for the pics. I do separate my AR15 so the magwell would be there for just the buttstock portion. But good approach nevertheless. Time permitting, I will explore adding to your idea to make it work for all configurations.

MTM fans: By consensus, it is obvious that you guys have selected a very acceptable product; I believe it will work well.

One thing is for sure, I should definitely benefit from additional support for cleaning my rifles, and now I know where to get it!

Thanks to all.

Rifle Cleaning Stand

I built my stand after seeing the ones offered by Sinclair International.Didn't cost me a dime as I used some scrap aluminum that was kicking around work, and some leftover pine shelving. It works Great!!
