I absolutely love the ergonomics of the SIG Mosquito. I have two of them. I can say now that the ergonomics are the only thing I love about the mosquito. One of my mosquitos lost the slide catch spring and is waiting for a part from SIG. The other stopped firing today after about 100 rounds. I am not sure what is wrong other than the trigger will not cycle completely and the hammer won't drop. So, both of them will be headed to the gunsmith soon.

After a series of problems I think I am finally willing to give up on them and get something else. I know people will recommend Rugers or Brownings but I am not interested in those pistols. I want something that has the ergonomics similar to my current guns. My first question is, how good are the 22 conversion kits for the SIG 226? After all, this is why I bought the mosquitos in the first place.

My second question is, are there any other semi 22s out there I should consider? The GSG 1911? or the M&P 22 that was at the shot show this year?

A good review of the GSG5 1911 is on the same page as this post.

I had an M&P22 rifle and not the pistol but its the same gun with no stock and a short barrel, It had growing pains on release as i bought mine then. But mine was reliable as was many other peoples. So id say the pistol should be a well proven LARGE handgun.

Mabey look around for a dedicated 1911 frame with an all steel conversion from Cenier or Marvel on it. Pretty expensive but alot more quality than the .22lr 1911 you see for $250.

I think there a quite a few revolvers in .22lr that are kool, But im not into revolvers so i couldn't recommend anything.
If im not mistaken i heard that Keltec is making a .22lr conversion for their PF9, Thats a great combo for a low price imo if it works well.

I do not own, nor have I fired one, but I like the look of the Beretta 87 Cheetah (not the Target, the Cheetah).

Anybody have any experience with this weapon, and can comment futher on it?

I've had my Mosquito for about 9 months. I had to send it back after about 500 rounds after having various problems with it. They opened the chamber up a little and that seemed to do it. later I needed to replace the recoil spring. I have over 2000 rounds through it now. Started having all manner of stovepipes, ftf, fte, mags dropping out and on and on. Sent it back to SIG again. They said they fired 30 rounds through it and said their were no problems. Took the gun out fired 200 rounds of CCI MiniMags. Again stovepiping, fte, ftf
basically the same deal. I called SIG and they said it was fine and they
wouldn't work on it again.
They more or less said stick it to me! I've got probably 2500 rounds through my Mosquito. I started off lovingthe gun. I think it has just shot itself to pieces. To add insult to injury when I suggested that I was accused of shooting too much high velocity ammo through it. I pointed out it had a spring just for firing "hot ammo". All that's been through it are CCI MiniMags, Federal Target Match, and some Remington Bulk ammo. Bottom line they won't fix the gun or replace it because it's almost off warranty. I'm done with it. It's a $300.00 piece of zinc. Some folks get lots of rounds out of them. Others have their frames crack after a few thousand rounds. I'll keep my P-series guns. Sure as hell won't buy anymore SIGS.

I looked at the Cheetah and am a little surprised at the price. Does it really take $800 plus to get into a decent .22?

SIGLBER, I hate to hear about your problems. It sounds like I should fix them and get rid of them.

i know i'll prbably get scoffed at but you should look at the phoenix arms hp 22. it a $100 gun but it shoots all kinds of ammo just fine. out of 1500 rounds of mainly remington and fiochi high velocity i only had about 10-20 fte ftf and stovepipes combined. it eventually got a small inward bend in the frame at the top of where the clip goes in inside the chamber and when i tried to unbend it it cracked, but i sent it in and they sent me a BRAND NEW GUN FOR FREE. since it has a lifetime warranty i can do this as many times as i want , at least i think it has a lifetime warranty.

the cool thing about them is they have great customer support, they actually told me to bend the law and send the gun in disassembled and labeled as machine parts to save me some money lol. and even though i had made some modifications to the gun's safety and clip release they still replaced it under warranty.

oh and you can buy a 5 inch barrel that is easy to swap out if you don't like the 3 inch it comes with. also if the grip is too small they have extended mags to make room for your pinky.

Just saw the no Ruger or Browning.......Hey, you don't like quality, that cool!:neener:

Have you looked at the Walther P22? Similar feel to the Sig, same zinc, but I think they have most of the bugs worked out. At least, I haven't heard as many problems with them lately.
There is a lack of good choices in .22's except for single action guns like the Ruger and Browning. You wouldn't think it would be so hard, or so expensive, to make a .22 gun with the feel of a Sig, and the reliability of a Sig, but very few companies have anything out there that isn't very expensive, or made by some third party company like Umarex and mostly made of the stuff I get my forum name from.
I'd like a good DA/SA .22 that is as well made as some of the centerfire pistols I have, but I haven't found one as well made for the price as the Ruger or the Browning, so I just stick with them.

It isn't that I don't like quality, its the grip angle. One of these days I'll break down and get one but I want a 22 that feels more like my SD guns. The CZ Kadet looks awesome. I'll have to see if any of my LGS carry them.

I had a Ruger 22 6-7/8" target barrel which was plenty accurate, but less than handy and was too muzzle-heavy for my young children. I sold it and bought a Beretta M87, before they were tagged "Cheetah." I believe I've had it now 17 years and it has never malfunctioned with even the cheapest bulk ammo. It's a great piece.

If you want the SD gun grip angle, you can get a basic Ruger MkIII/45 for around $270.00. Of course, the grip will be half the width of your typical SD gun!

A short barrel Browning Buckmark might be closer to the mark.

Then there's the Smith and Wesson 22A.

Just because it doesn't look like an SD gun doesn't mean it's not good practice!

If it must look the part, try the Walther P22. It's probably the most popular "tactical" zinc .22 pistol, and it's usually reliable, as long as you shoot high velocity ammo.

Or take your chances on the ISSC Glock look-alike. JG Sales is having a sale on the 4" version. Only $200.00!

Yeah, just messin with ya:D Ruger 22/45 as mentioned above, love mine!

I had one for less than 1000 rounds. It went back to Cabela's got a Ruger 22/45 and never looked back. Nothing fed well in the Sig.

@KDS

Beretta has been manufacturing, and pushing the (awful, in my opinion) Target onto people. As a result, the Cheetah has become extremely rare, and the price is more likely due to how difficult it is to find than anything else.

Well I have my Beretta Model 70S which has a great feel and balance to it, is small and compact (as befitting the the cartridge it is chambered for), and has been 100% reliable with any rimfire ammo I have put through it. Only problem is that they quit making them over 25 years ago. The Beretta Cheetah is nice and has many of the same attributes as my Model 70S, but it is way too expensive, especially when compared to a Ruger Mk.III or a Browning Buckmark.
