Just wondering if anyone has recently bought a rifle from Wal-Mart. More specifically I've been looking at their Marlin 30-30, I don't know what model it is, but it was around $295. Also I was just there today and saw their 270's and 30-06 was $249. I think they were Remmington's and they didn't have those cheap scopes on them. I've seen them as low as $300 with the scopes, but for some reason 250 just stuck out to me. Anyone have any experiences good or bad with any of these rifles? I don't think I've seen any of those mentioned calibers cheaper, the internet included. Anyone seen new 30-30's cheaper anywhere else? I've almost convinced myself to just cough up the three bills for one.

The Marlin is a 336, the Remington is a 710. The Marlin would be a great buy whereas the Remington wouldn't be such a fine choice. The 710 is a pressed in barrel assembly which has reputedly sucked buttermilk. That said, I'd wager it'll shoot well enough for someone who hunts little and shoots less.

Before anybody chimes in claiming that the Wallyworld firearms are in some way inferior, thats just not true. The stuff at Walmart are regular production, identical to the ones you'd find in any mom-and-pop gunshop.

I've seen the .30-30 Marlins at Walmart, and have been tempted to pick one up, as thats a really good price.

The $250 rifles you saw were *probably* Mossberg 100 ATR rifles, although dont quote me on that. They are excellent.

About 2 years ago, I bought my Savage .30-06 at a Walmart store in San Antonio, and I love it.

The Remington is in fact the 710. I have personally handled and shot one and I have to say, that it is the biggest piece of sh't I have EVER handled. I even removed the action from the stock and guess what? It is the only rifle I have ever seen that has no integral recoil lug. The only thing holding the action in place, aside from the screws, is a thin stamped steel wafer keyed into a slot in the action. Just pathetic. That said, it did shoot well. The bolt was horribly sticky/rough/clunky but the first 5 shot group at 50 Yards was one big hole. I would never own one, however, I have taste.

The marlin in all honesty will probably be my next purchase. I don't have a 30-30 and already have a 30-06. However, I'll steer my friend away from the 710. They look like a plastic bb gun to me. I've found a few 336's for 250-300 on some of the auction sites but then you pay shipping, ffl transfer fee, and get a used gun for the price of a new one. Forget about finding a marlin at any pawn shops around here. They only have the $500-700 Winchesters. I don't really care if they're out of business, I'd just like a reasonably priced rifle to beat around the bush with.

I saw that marlin today at my local wallymart for about 290.00 It was the 30-30 lever action rifle. I was really tempted to purchase it. I am going to our local gun show tomorrow and see what they have. I have couple of guns I wanting to buy.

They are:

Magazine/clip for my .303
Buckmark Hunter .22
Yugo SKS

I bought a Marlin 30-30 last year-I also got a Win94-earlier this week i traded in the marlin to get a Rossi in .357-kept the Winchester.
i couldn't get the Marlin to shoot consistently
my .02

bass pro

Go to Bass Pro and get a Winchester 1300 shotgun with 28" modified barrel for $299. They also have the Remington 870 series if that is your preference at about the same price. Much more shotgun with a little tradition and much better quality than the 710. My two cents worth!

Not necessarily. They are no doubt functional and safe (no manufacturer is going to ship defective products for fear of liability), but Wal Mart will sometimes bulk purchase special runs of popular models of guns that have had corners cut in terms of fit, finish, etc.

Wal Mart does this with other products also, not just guns. They buy enough products that manufacturers can build exactly what Wal Mart wants, and usually what Wal Mart wants to do is sell products for as little as possible. Nothing wrong with that.

The Marlin that WalMart sells is the 336W. It comes with the classic gold trigger and a sling. Some of the W's will come with a sling and a scope for a nice hunting package. All of the 336W's are drilled for a scope mount so if you need a scope later it is a simple do it yourself project.
At Christmas the 336W was selling here for $289.00 +tax. The 336 is a very nice rifle and a bargain for the money. You don't need a magnum super caliber to take deer and bear at 150yds. The 30-30 works just fine. The gun companies and gun writers would have you believe the 30-30 is an antique that should be retired. They want you to shoot the hot new caliber on the market when all the time most hunters had all the gun they ever needed already. Millions of dead deer cannot be wrong.
I have bought several rifles from walmart. I shop for the best price. I do my homework before I shop. I have no need for gun shop commandos or a mall ninja telling me what I want or need.
The Remington 710 is a good gun for what it is intended. A low cost hunting rifle that was intended to be used during hunting season. No the 710 will never be a 700 but it works just fine. Some folks complain about the plastic parts but the same folks likely complained about the Glock too.

A new Marlin 336 for $250 is a deal I wouldn't pass up. As was said, the rifles at Wally World come from the same regular production runs as anyone else's stock. As a high-utility CF carbine, the .30-30 Marlin would be an excellent choice - rugged, reliable, versatile, and likely to be more accurate than you can hold for with the ammo it prefers. Aftermarket options for sights, etc. are plentiful so you can pretty much tailor one to suit you without having to take out a second mortgage or raid the kids' college fund.

IIWY, I'd get one while your local Wally's still offers firearms. Once they're gone, you're not likely to see another new Marlin at that steep a discount from MSRP anytime soon. More and more Wal-Marts are discontinuing firearms sales every day, so I wouldn't mull it over too long. Verb sap.

I am glad this post came up. I have been eyeing the 30-30 at Walmart for a while. It is right at $300 down hear. It has been a few weeks since I checked though.

Before you buy the one right there, ask if they have any scratch/dent rifles in back. Sometimes awesome deals can be had from that secret stash.

Good luck finding a Walmart that sells guns If you live in a Metropolitan area. By the time I drive to one here that does I have wasted all the money saved on Time and Gas.

Call and ask if they sell'em before ya go. :neener:

May I suggest ... 336A

I very much agree with B.D.

I've been researching Marlin levers in .30-30 for months.

Before that, I was dead set on a bolt gun in .308 or 7mm08.

Then, I bought a (very nice) CZ 452 (tack driver),
and discovered that I'm not a bolt guy.

So, I turned my attention to levers,
(which are closer to pumps {see user name} than bolts,
and since I once owned a 336 {fine gun},
that meant Marlin 336.

I dug for differences
between A, C & W.
I found them:

* C has walnut furniture. A & W have birch.
* C & W have barrel bands. A has fore end cap.

For what I think are good reasons,
I wanted birch furniture and fore end caps.

* Birch is harder and more resilient.
* The large majority of current production Marlins -
* 336 and otherwise - have fore end caps instead of barrel bands.

A 336A will cost you about $50 more than a W,
but about $50 less than a C.

The decision is yours.

Good luck.

The only gun I have purchased from Wally World is a Remington 597 (camo stock- unique to Wal-Mart). If any corners were cut in the production of this model, I am not aware of them. Fit and finish are quite good (well, as far as a 597 is concerned), and it is reliable and accurate. For $140, I do not believe there is a better semiauto .22 on the market, and I doubt a person could beat mine for twice the price.

The only reason I have not bought more guns from Wal-Mart is that I just am not that interested in most of what they carry- I prefer handguns and "non sporting" firearms. Sure, the process of buying from them is a pain, but if the price is right and the gun is right, I'll do it without a worry. I just can't see that making a receiver/action with lessened quality would be cost-effective enough to lower the price for Wal-Mart. Better to just pull some off the shelf and put a cheaper stock on them (but quite honestly, even a cheap stock is generally good enough).

I've bought a rifle and a shotgun from WalMart - both were top-notch quality. I'm lucky in that I have THREE firearm-selling WalMarts in spitting distance from me, all with relatively differing inventory. The local one even has relatively informed (relatively, mind you) salespeople.

i would find it hard to beleve that firearm manufactures would open a totally new line just to make cheap ****ty firearms to sell to walmart lol. now i could see them selling the cheap models of there firearms to walmart but thats about it.

Lone Gunman, where did your information come from. If there are any corners cut on my Remington Model 700, Browning A Bolt, Ruger 10/22, Remington 870 or Mossberg 835 I can't find them. I think you might have gotten some misguided information from somewhere. Just doesn't make sense for manufacturers to cut corners like that for Wal Mart.

Bought a Mossberg ATR-100 in .30-06 from my local Wally-World. It will shoot under 2"@100 Yds with most commercial (cheap) soft-point Hunting ammo.

Shooting Buddy got under 0.7" with Federal Gold Medal match ammo, so the ATR will do its part if I do mine.
