Due to project Exile the MD state police have been asking for the store to get a person's driver license information anytime they purchase ammunition. At first they tried to pass this off as a law and must be done. Of course it is not a law but favor to the police. Another words it is not mandatory. I wrote several letters and phone calls to Walmart corporate and they agreed to make it an option.
Well, I have tried to buy ammo several times from a couple of different Walmarts with mixed success. Sometimes they let me purchase without taking my information. Other times they won't Really depends on who you get. I'd say it's a 50/50 chance.
I'm a single person and have already made some head way into the unfair policy. I ask all people who purchase from Walmart in MD to stand your ground and not give up your driver license information. If you are refused purchase than contact corparate Walmart and let the manager know. Things will change.
A few more complaints and this policy will go away. The next few years will be rough. But we can not get complacent. Get out and stand for your rights.

It's not just Walmart that is being asked to do this. It is all stores. Walmart is the largest and others will follow.
By not doing anything now will lead to larger problems later. Take a few minutes and lodge a complaint. It's not that hard.
I'm ONE person who lodged a complaint and I already have some results. Imagine what would happen with a few more.

Wal-Mart is phasing out all gun and ammo sales anyway. Just start looking now for another place to buy cheap blasting ammo. Apparently they are doing it slowly to avoid the "K-mart boycot" that Mikey Moore brought on. According to the local sporting goods mgr, they are just tired of the hassle of all the federal paperwork involved with firearms. He was dissapointed to see the ammo go though. I guess management thinks if they are not selling guns, they don't need to sell ammo.

In Mass we have to show our firearm license, or LTC to purchase ammo at any store. And why do people shop at Walmart since it is the most anti-worker company in America. Please shop at your local gun store, or though a online vendor but don't shop at Walmart. Save American small businesses by boycotting Walmart.

No they're not.

They are cutting back gun sales to a limited number of stores.

Of course I've never seen a gun in a Walmart that I'd want in the first place. It's nothing but vanilla "hunting" guns, and the last thing I hunted was North Koreans.

They do however sell LOTS of ammunition, and at VERY reasonable prices. I shoot a LOT of .45acp and .38 Special, so I reload for those calibers. I shoot far less 9mm and .40S&W, so at least for the time being, I buy what I need from Walmart. Nobody else can touch them for Winchester white box handgun ammo. BTW, they sell the Winchester white box 147gr. 9mm JHPs, which get very high marks for performance. Now that Aguila no longer sells their "IQ" 9mm, I've switched to the Winchester.

My objection to Walmart is the sometimes near impossibility of getting waited on in the sporting goods department, at least in their North Olmsted, Ohio store. I've stopped two and three sales-droids trying to get somebody to the ammo counter, without success. When I know that I've got limited time, I've taken to calling ahead! Imagine that, having to make an APPOINTMENT... at WALMART! The prices make it worthwhile.

Actually, I beg to differ.

When the newest Wal-Mart opened up where I live, it was supposed to be sort of a "supercenter LITE." No tire&lube. Ammo, but NO guns.

Abooooooout......8 months, give or take after they open, guess what they now stock that they WEREN'T planning on in the first place! :D I'll give you a hint, it's NOT the tire & lube station! ;)

SOMEONE made them change their minds. A bit ashamed to admit I wasn't one of them. But whoever did it, got it done!

THIS TOPIC HAS BEEN EXHAUSTED OVER AND OVER.

WAL-MART IS NOT GOING TO STOP SELLING AMMO.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE WAL-MART, DON'T SHOP THERE.

KTHXBYE.
:barf: :barf: :barf:

I'm just going by what the manager told me. I know it has been discussed and cussed here many time. But that was months ago. Corporate big wigs change their minds all the time. Maybe last year they weren't stopping all sales, but maybe they are now? Maybe the manager that told me this doesn't know his @$$ from a hole in the ground. But that's why these are called DISCUSSION BOARDS. To discuss topics like this.

Well, he asked me if I was 21. I responed "No" I wish I still was. Then he said he couldn't sell me the ammo because the law said I have to be 21, as he handed me by bag of ammo.....

In Case It Matters . . .

For those of you who like to plink, and who like Ruger:

Ruger makes a version of their 10/22 in stainless with a 22-inch barrel.

It is only sold through Wal*Mart.

I remembered seeing one and tried to buy one in six different stores. Most had never heard of the 22-inch stainless ("no such gun"), but one shop owner grinned and said,
"That's a WalMart gun."
"Sorry, come again?"
"Only WalMart sells it. Some agreement they made with Sam Walton when he was alive. There's a shotgun they carry that's only sold there, too."
"Uh, ahha, right, okay."
So I went to one of the Reno stores and, sure enough, they had the 22-inch stainless.

Yes, the purchase was fraught with pedantic paperwork and an escort, but when that's the only place that sells what you want, you do what you must.

I may be the only guy on THR that even cares about that rifle. That's okay. I have the one I want.

Get yer own.

Mike128;

None of the Wal-Mart's in my area of Maryland sell ammo anymore. I bought some at bass pro a few weeks ago and no ID required.

my little way of bucking the system

I purchase large quantities of ammo from wally world mostly in 9MM. And it never fails thier darn computer tells the cashier (idiot proof) to see ID for a handgun I.E. handgun ammo = 21yrs right! However just for a moment I tell the cashier that it is not for a handgun but my rifle:confused: Thier reply "Sir a 9mm is a handgun not rifle, I'm gonna need to see ID" And of course I show it, saying how stupid I am my mistake while shaking my head.

Noticed Walmart ammo prices are going up.

Love the Walmart bashing. It's a terrible place. Being such a terrible place must be the reason that I have no trouble parking right next to the front door anytime I go there. Does "anti-worker" mean it is not unionized? If so, then you probably don't shop at Target, Burger King, McDonalds, Ace, the Mom and Pop gun shop, use a private gunsmith or most of the businesses in your town. The places I don't like, I don't go to. Vote my dislike by not giving them my money, not by trying to start a national movement.

I don't see too many problems or hassles at our local Walmart(s)...oh, that's right, I live in Tennessee :D

Actually, some of the folks behind the gun counter are real gun aficionados that get to the "sale items" before anyone else...or so they say

I can name four 9mm rifles off the top of my head, and I own two of those.

(Ironically, I don't own any 9mm pistols, just rifles. My wife and son have the 9mm pistols.)

Marlin Camp 9 (a very nice -- but discontinued -- carbine)

Beretta CX4 Storm 9mm (very nice current production carbine)

Kel-tec Sub2000 9mm folding carbine (I don't own this)

Hi Point 995C 9mm carbine (I don't own this, work buddy does)

There are others.

So, yeah, the 9mm cartridge is only for pistols, just like the .22 LR is just for pistols.

I don't. Well, one item every month since they stopped selling 12 GA ammo.

Wal-Mart

:what: WAL MART IN upstate SC removed rifles.
Many hunters in this area, with very few locations to purchase.
Then yesterday I checked on ammo and they raised their prices so that I can now get ammo cheaper at local gun shops.
Typical big business, they couldn't keep the shelves stocked anyway now it will be less of a problem.

Got more info from another sporting goods manager in the Camden SC store. It basically boils down to sales numbers. They have to have a 45% to 55% sales ratio of firearms to other sporting goods items to maintain the firearms inventory. If firearms sales are not at least 45% of their total sporting goods inventory, they get pulled.
I'm just glad Sportsmans Warehouse came to town. I no longer have a reason to shop at Wal-Mart :D

Guys, you've allowed yourselves to get steered away from the original point of the thread with all of the usual Walmart bashing.

The POINT is that, if the Maryland State Police can swindle dealers and chain stores into believing that the law requires them to take down your personal information, it won't be long before it DOES BECOME LAW. And it won't stop in Maryland; it'll spill over to other states quick enough.

But for now, the masses of new shooters will grow up thinking it's the law, and assume it's "reasonable" since they won't ever have known anything different.

Add another notch in the anti's belt for eroding your freedom and personal security (what? you think Walmart or other retailers will safegaurd your personal information that just screams, "Gun owner lives HERE! Come steal guns!"????)

Mike128 - Thanks for making the effort, and for trying to explain yourself here.

I 'gree with ya, bud. Every time you get asked for ID, you show it with a smile. Every time they try to record it, you 'Just Say NO!" and complain up their chain of command. It's a simple thing, and in the long run it's probably well worth doin'.

Went to walmart Friday night, lots of guns.
Went back saturday afternoon, all gone! Sign in case said "12 foot gun case for sale $300 see associate"
