Walmart and Ammo

My local Walmart in MD takes down your driver license information whenever you buy ammunition. Rifle, pistol, 22, it doesn't matter. I didn't think much of it until I started to talk to the salesman. He said that the State Police come in and photocopy the information and it's a MD law. I thought it was an inventory thing until he said it was a MD law and police photocopy the information.
Is this a MD law and other places are breaking the law? I'm pretty upset that the police are photocopying the information.

It is an individual Walmart policy in MD. My local wally world has never asked me for ID when purchasing ammo. I have also purchased ammo at other locations such as a gun show and gun shops without an ID.

Powder is another story. I have always had to show ID for powder purchases. That is a MD state law.

I second the BS call. It IS NOT LAW....It's probably the individual store or department manager's policy. Call the higher-ups in Wal Mart and demand that they put a stop to it. They'll shut it down.....there's been other threads here and on other forums regarding the exact same crap.

This is some local thing! I live in Western MD and have 2 Walmarts that I purchase ammo at and I have never had to show any ID. MD is so bad to gun owners! I am glad I live in a part of the state that for the most part leaves gun owners alone. Of course you never know when that will change! If it gets any worse I may have move to WV!!

AIMSurplus asked for my driver's license via fax when I bought my first 1k rounds from them. Sportsman's guide, which is usually far more into CYA, never asked for anything and just sent the ammo.

Never had to show ID at walmart to buy ammo. I think I bought a bunch of 380 auto from them a long time ago. Which reminds me, I should probably buy a case of that and 40 cal from Aim one of these days.

Different states different rules I have noticed that the places that ask for you to fax them your Drivers license seem to charge less. I buy ammo from 4 different Walmarts and they never ask for ID but this FL which is still a free state

Some FFL's require documentation out here, saying that their books are checked for handgun rounds. Needless to say, I don't go there if I can avoid it.

Im 20 so often buying ammo for me means an ID check. Showing ID I don't mind, but if they start writing down what I'm buying with the number and/or name Im taking my license and they can keep the ammo I will go somewhere else

I left 440 rounds (Sealed Spam Can) of 7.62x54 at the register of my local Dunham's about a year ago when they wanted to copy my DL info.

Story was (from the Store Manager) that the FBI [ahem] "requested" that they take that info down, after the store had been smash-n-grab burgled one night. Miscreant(s) somehow got to the back of the store, broke into the display cases and stole a bunch of various rifles & shotguns, then got away.

City Police Department is only 6 blocks away, so they building security system must not have been working.

Oh, yeah, I can just see the miscreants going back into same store..

"Hey Dude, I need some bullets for this Mauser Thingy I stole from ya last weekend..."

The Sports Authority tried doing this 8 or 9 years ago. Its somebody in Wallymart trying to be a lawyer and figure out a way to protect themselves.

Nope. Eastern Shore of MD. Usually nothing like the Baltimore/Washington corridor people. We love our guns on this side. Unfortunatly the money and population is on the other side of the Bridge so you don't hear from us much.

Wal Mart is a target for every leftie lawyer wanting to get a name and some money. It's a big target.

I don't blame them for paranoia, especially in MD, which AFAIK has recently passed business laws that only affect Wal-Mart and no other company.

I'm in Montgomery County and have bought hundreds of rounds at a time of .40 and .45 from the Germantown Wal-Mart. They never asked for any ID from me. If I don't have to show ID in Montgomery County, I'm sure you guys on the Eastern shore are getting hosed.

That is weird for the shore, you must have a chicken necker in that Walmart. Go buy the ammo fro Albrights in Easton or Drapers in Centreville.

I'm further south of Albrights in Easton. Actually, I've never been there but keep meaning to go. I usually go to Wink's in Princess Anne which has pretty good prices on guns. Walmart ammo is cheaper. I guess I'll stop in tomorrow and see if I can get a number or where the law is written. I'll let you know how it goes.

I buy my ammo mostly at the walmart in Bowie or Laurel Md. Other then telling the young-ass pimply face kids behind the counter the difference between 9MM & .45,I get no other questions,requests for id,or anything.

I went to the store in Fruitland Md and they did the same thing. I talked to the guy behind the counter and he said it was a state law and the Maryland State Police comes by and checks their record every couple of months.
I than asked him for the law number since I couldn't find it on record. He turned me over to the manager on duty.
The manager said the same thing to which I asked for the law number again. It was than he said it was the ATF regulation that they take down driver licenses. I replied that I have bought ammo all over MD and in the same town without having my driver license copied and if it was a ATF regulation than everyone in all states would have to do it. Finally, he confessed that it was a store policy because of "situations" and that they have the ATF and MSP approval.
Well, now I know it is a store policy. I asked for coporates phone number and have called them to lodge a complaint. It is an invasion of privacy to have my DL information floating around. Especially since I never committed a crime.

Regarding the Walmart stores in Salisbury MD and Fruitland MD on Route 13.
If the ATF is involved than this could be a test to see if anyone complains. If no one does they might try to make it law. We have seen this in other Walmart stores and stopped it there. Let's not let this one get away. Thanks.

They tried doing that to me at a local Dunhams once. I have bought many guns and too much ammo to tally up from them over the years, and some new guy just out of the blue asked for my ID. I insisted to speak to the supervisor, who recognised me and apologised for the stupidity of the policy, and explained that they did random checks like that as part of a store policy which he couldn't change. He informed the cashier that I was a frequent customer who had at least 2 form 4473's in their records, and that he did not need to see my ID. Even though it doesn't effect me, their random ID checks piss me off. The thing is, I know several people that work there, and shopping there has to be better than going to Walmart.

Purchased some .22 in MD recently. There was no one at the sporting goods counter so the clerk helping me took the ammo to Electronics for me to purchase. Asked if purchase was [a] pistol, said no, thinking they actually meant was I purchasing a pistol. And obviously not, WM does not sell them. Was buying it anyway for a target rifle. Did not take my name though; good for them because I would have refused the purchase if asked.

Later in another store I asked about buying if out of state; was curious [I had finally put 2 and 2 together (sometimes a bit s-l-o-w)]. They said there are WM regulations for selling ammo, i.e. that they will not sell to out- of-state people if they are from certain states (no details, none requested). They also said a federal law prohibits selling pistol ammo to anyone under 21.
