Walmart handgun ammo

I was told by a Walmart employee that all of the Walmarts in my area will no longer carry ANY handgun ammo. They are selling what they have in stock but are no longer ordering any more. They will continue to order and sell long gun ammo though because you know you can't shoot somebody with a long gun.:rolleyes:

I live in SE PA. Anybody else heard of this happening in their area?

False alarm. I apologize for that, I should have gotten all of the facts before I posted. I just talked to corporate Walmart and a local store manager and they said it is just low stock. Corporate said that they stock according to the prior years sales and that for some reason this year the sales of handgun ammo has been grossly higher. Guess that is the last time I believe a floor Walmart employee. Again I am truly sorry.

That would explain why I haven't seen any handgun ammo at my local Walmarts.
 
I doubt it. The employee you talked to was probably misinformed. I haven't heard anything like this here in Indiana. I sure hope it's not true. Walmart is the only reason I can afford to shoot my handguns! All the big-name outdoors stores like Gander Mountain, Cabellas, etc are a total rip-off when it comes to handgun ammo. They literally charge TWICE what Walmart charges for a box of 9mm or .40s&w FMJ target ammo. The local gun shops are just as bad.

For what it's worth I just bought six boxes of Federal 9mm FMJ and another six boxes of .40s&w from my local Walmart just last week.
 
Talked to 3 different stores today. They all are continuing to order it and stock it.

They're still carrying it at the Wal-Marts around KCMO. Albeit they rarely have any in stock. The one in Liberty, MO has had the same problem of someone buying ALL the 9x19 they have when it comes in. I'm dead serious, according to the guys hey have behind the counter the same guy comes in the day they get it and buys every stinking 9mm they have. They swear they've sold over 1000 rounds to him in a month.
 
All I've heard in my area is if people keep complaining to regional management about the ammo shortage, they'll just close the firearms counter entirely. Not sure if that's true, but the firearms counter isn't exactly a good moneymaker here.

The ammo supply is scarece enough that low prices won't save it...and their longarms aren't as cheaply priced as other local options....so they may as well close it if customers are being a PITA.
 
I guess what I don't understand though is if they know they are under stocking then why don't they order frickin more???

If you get two trucks a week ( I don't know if that is what they get, I am just speculating ) and a product sells out the same day you get it, then order more. IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.
 
Actually it's funny you say that because about 2 months ago I also went to a Walmart and was told the exact same thing. So I just drove to the next walmart and picked up 2 boxes of .40 FMJ. So a couple weeks later I went to the original walmart (the one that told me they were no longer stocking handgun ammo) and to my surprise they had several boxes of .40 FMJ and a couple of .40 Corbon PDX.

I really do wish they would stock more ammo there.
 
This has been going on for some time, in some markets. With Wal-Mart, their support for shooting sports only goes as far as their bottom line. If ammo doesn't sell in a particular market in sufficient quantity to make it worthwhile, or if local regulations are overly burdensome - or both - they will stop selling it.

Locally, they just don't have any ammo, at least not the 9mm Luger I shoot.

It wouldn't have done any good for them to double their orders when the ammunition manufacturers can't supply the demand. If it's not there, they can't deliver it.

All of the major ammunition companies have hired additional personnel and have been working three shifts a day, in an effort to keep up with demand, but they still can't do it. My dealer got an order in for 100,000 Federal small pistol primers on December 22nd. He ordered those primers last January, so it took a year for the order to be filled, and it was drop shipped directly from Federal.

The days of not stocking your own shelves because you can go to the local store and buy what you need have been gone since just before the last election, and will continue for a few more months. You should keep your ammunition locker filled like you do your gas tank. I'm sure there aren't many people who go to the gas station and just put enough gas in to run the day's errands, and no more, knowing that they can go to the same station tomorrow and buy just enough for that day. What happens if your station runs out of gas, like they did two different periods in the 1970's?

Plan ahead and don't get caught up in temporary market shortages.

Im in NEPA (Pike County area) and both of the local Walmarts , as well as ones in Scranton and Wilkes Barre seems to have a decent supply of 9mm .40 and .45 whenever Im in there, and In my conversations with the man behind the counter (Take this for what it's worth ) they have never alluded to not stocking anymore.
 
HA walmarts stocking system is atrochious
my local walmarts (7 in total) have had little or no ammo for handguns in the past year

i partialy believe that the stores stock according to last years numbers but i also know for fact walmart managment can over ride that system and order what they are short on
the idea that walmart cant get ammo is complete bunk

ALL of the rip off locations can get pleanty of ammo but im not paying an arm and a leg for 20 rounds at a time

ive found that 5 out of the 7 walmarts in my area have "redesigned" the store and have conveniently forgoten to add the gun carousels back in

the lack of ammo on the shelves for the past year doesnt really shock me but im starting to get the feeling that walmart is anti gun but they are too chicken poo to tell the hunters that bring in there hard earned money accross the nation

best bet for ammo is either pay an arm and a leg (maybe even an ear) in a local shop or get it online bottom line walmart sucks
 
Supply & Demand will do it every time.(from the Mfg's)

I quit walking into my local Walmart. I need a detective to find an employee.

Cabelas mail order for me lately. Pay a little for more less aggravation.
 
People it is not Walmart. It is the manufacturers. They are cranking out as much ammo as they can. Walmart pays them less than anyone else because of their volume and their aggressive contracts.

The producers are only supplying Walmart with the minimum they are required to. They are selling the bulk of what they produce to other retailers which pay them a higher price. At the minimum contract requirement only a small Qty of ammo reaches each distribution point. Each store only gets so much.

On top of that the avg consumer has created a retail ammo shortage. People horde it. They buy everything they can when they see it at a reasonable price. How many times have you seen someone buy every box of 45 ACP on the shelf? The more you buy the more frantic the next person gets. The more you have created as self fulfilling ammo shortage.

Why is that Walmarts fault?

i doubt that they are gonna stop selling handgun ammo. i used to work for wal-mart and know alot of people that still do, i haven't heard anything about this, and the average employee of wal mart isn't on the up and up about what is being ordered and not.
 
I bought 9mm ammo at my Fort Worth Wal-Mart yesterday. They had more 9mm and .40 cal than I have seen in months. The employee assisting me said I could expect to see more ammo in stock in the coming months and the removal of the six box limit.

Hell With Walmart

Finding ammo consistently in Walmart in south Louisiana is much like listening to our local weatherman.
When you think they have a pattern set they screw it up.
One of my New Years resolutions is to avoid Walmart completely.
The extra 1-3% I spend at Academy or Even pawn shop is worth it to me I figure.

So I say:cuss: Screw Wally World in 2010

That's right I said it!;)
 
Walmart's business practices are partly to blame for their lack of supply. Walmart's business model is to squeeze their vendors to sell to them for a wholesale price that is lower than they sell to other retailers. Then Walmart comes back again and again pushing the vendor to lower their wholesale price. Since Walmart is the world's largest retailer and most manufacturers are desperate to get their product on Walmart's shelves this strategy usually works. But in the current ammo situation, the manufacturers have no problem selling their product through other retailers so they have no incentive to sell for a lower price to Walmart. The ammo shelves at Dicks are full because I'm sure they are willing to pay a high wholesale price.

I hate buying ammo at Walmart, even though they have the best prices.

The last time I was in a Walmart and purchased ammo, I had to ask for someone to open up the sporting goods counter. The young woman asked me what I needed and when I told her I needed ammo, she got real uncomfortable. No, I don't look like a gangsta, got no facial hair, am middle age, and was wearing "corporate casual" attire.

Another time, I was at a Bass Pro and asked about the Sigma rebate and was told that S&W is discontinuing the Sigma and that's why they have the rebate and that they don't have any in stock. I called S&W on the spot and got to customer service. S&W was like - er, no - what are you talking about?

So no, I don't believe $8/hr floor associates.
