Walmart handgun ammo

MAKster Walmart's business practices are partly to blame for their lack of supply. Walmart's business model is to squeeze their vendors to sell to them for a wholesale price that is lower than they sell to other retailers.....

Bravo for WalMart!

It's called capitalism. No one is required to sell to WalMart. Those wholesalers are crying all they way to the bank.

I am seeing ammo again on the shelves at WM around here. Not huge quanities, but I bought 9mm, 44mag and 22LR the other day at one.
They would be smart to continue to offer ammo at a good price. It is the one reason I go to WM. All retailers have loss leaders to get you into the store in the first place.

Saw... well... OK.. I BOUGHT 100 rds of WWB .45ACP a few weeks agor for $55 at the local Big 5...:fire:

I have 2 local Walmarts & it's hit & miss. Gotta get there at the right time. When's the right time? When the ammo gets there, of course.:neener:

Right now they are LOADED with bulk Federal & Rem .223, 12GA 00, and .40 S&W.

Never seen more than a few boxes of .45 or .22 LR tho...:(

Rellascout nailed Wal-Mart!!!

They are as unfair to suppliers as they are to us...they have historically put other businesses out of business...then left smaller towns where it wasn't profitable to stay with no stores, no jobs...I'll always buy small and local what I can...

JMOfartO:

Well... I'm 67 years old.

I well remember the days of those "Mom n' Pop" stores some folks seem to miss so much, but my recollection must be different from those who miss them so badly.

In the days of "Mom ' Pop" stores in S.E. Ga. back in the 50's in the small community in which I lived MOST "Mom 'n Pop's" stores were not as customer friendly as some might think.

Or, the first priority of those "Mom 'n Pop" stores was to make as much profit for the MOM and POP as possible, and since in many situations the Mom/Pop store was the ONLY store in town selling whatever it might be then guess who set the retail prices?

MOM AND POP..;)

I always crack up when I read a post where someone says he/she will not buy from the terrible bully, WalMart, because they have driven all of the poor little "guys" out of business.

Well, hey.. OK. I've yet to see an empty WalMart parking lot, unless you consider perhaps at 2:00AM...

IF I have a local retailer who treats me well, and if I can buy whatever I need locally at a "fair" price then I'll do that. But if WalMart has it, has it cheaper, and will take it back if somethings wrong with it, then that's where I'll buy it.

But that's just me.

I'm a veteran of those wonderful "Mom n' Pop" days some folks seem to be so fond of, and my recollection is that all the power back then was in the hands of the retailer and that retailer had a priory, and priority number ONE was the stores profits.

Just personal opinion, no offense if your memory is different from mine.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

It's funny, but I've seen some Walmarts in this area drop gun sales. Those tend to be the best places to look for ammo. One store about 20 miles from here always has a better selection of handgun ammo then anyone else. They had 9mm and .40S&W last summer when no one else did. Last week they had a bunch of the 100rd boxes of WWB in .380.
Ammo sales make money for Walmart without the headache of NICs checks, yellow forms, etc. I think they will always keep that end of the business.

Bravo to PX15. I also grew up with the Mom & Pop stores. Don't miss them. I cannot afford to shop there. And Walmart never put anyone out of business. The customers did because Walmart offered a lower price and that's what I want. I don't need quality (read high dollar) employees. I do my buying research before I leave the house. I only need an employee to take my money.

I see that so many people have stopped shopping at Walmart that they are building new stores faster than anyone else in the U.S. That boycott sure did take the wind out of expansion plans, didn't it?

Oh yea, I do not now nor have I ever worked at Walmart.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong and your mileage may vary.

Onward Illusion said , "I don't believe $8/hr floor associates."

I have had to deal with some of these "Tim" at the sporting goods counter, and most of these folks wouldn't know the difference between a shot shell and a pistol cartridge. I do buy there, but I usually have to explain to the associate exactly wht I want, and make sure they give me the right thing. Mostly there will be a good, smart guy/girl working there that knows what is going on, but sometimes......:scrutiny:

(my quote feature isn't working for some reason.)

McBuck,

Many people get disenchanted with the knowledge of the clerk in the sporting guns section, especially that portion involving firearms in any manner, especially ammunition, but...

Expecting a minimum wage employee who might be in sporting goods today and electronics tomorrow and perhaps who knows where the next day to have a serious working knowledge of each product in each section is simply not practical.

When we go to buy ammo at Wally World (or hopefully anything else) we generally know going in what it is that we wish to buy.. We can pretty quickly look at the shelves and see right off the bat whether or not our chosen fodder is in stock or there is an empty space where we want our specific ammo to normally reside.

About the only things we need a clerk for is to take our money, put the purchased ammunition in the plastic bag and wish us a merry day..

There COULD be times when we foolishly expect that person to know when the missing stock will be replenished but chances are IF that person offers such information it's a guess at best.

And when you ask that same person whether or not a particular WalMart is discontinuing ammo sales altogether you are asking the wrong person, because chances are NO person employed by WalMart at that location, including the store manager, has any idea...

Those decisions are made by the bean counters in Arkansas and I'm not sure even they know from one day to the next what corporate decisions are being made about much of anything.

WalMart is above all things, profit driven. As long as selling gun ammunition is profitable for them, and they can't make more profitable use of the shelf space with something else, they'll be selling ammunition.

WalMart has no interest in discontinuing a profitable item unless they feel they can better use the space. Since ammo is just a "sub-section" of all things sporting in the store (fishing gear/hunting gear/camping gear, etc) I believe in most places they'll keep selling ammunition for a long, long time.

Obviously there are sections of the country where ammunition sales are a bigger deal than some others.. I know here in the South hunting and shooting is pretty much a big deal.

Not sure about New Jersey.. :D

Just rambling, no offense.

Best Wishes,

jesse

P.S. It is NOT a surprise to me that WalMark is discontinuing the sale of firearms... ATF is making life hell for dedicated gun dealers, and all paperwork now must be done PERFECTLY, correctly, and timely. Even some gun shops are finding this out now the hard way, and WalMart employees simply cannot be expected to have those special skills required to make sure paperwork is done properly, and it's easier for WalMart to just stop selling guns altogether than to train specific employees to do it right.

Many of the WallyWorlds in my neck of the woods stopped carrying firearms long ago, including rifles. Thankfully, all of them still carry ammo, and just as thankfully, all of them that I frequent (two in Salem, one in Redmond, one in Ontario) indicated that they plan to continue carrying ammo long into the future. You can say what you will about Walmart, but IMO they are convenient and offer decent prices on a number of items, handgun ammo among them. I just picked up two boxes of Winchester WB 115-grain 9mm for under $20 a box. It's gone up $4 or so in the past two years, but it's still cheaper than most other places I know, including a lot of the online operations when shipping is factored into the mix.

PX15 and Richard 597 I also grew up in a little southern Mississippi town and can remember the “Mom & Pop” stores very well. They were all about like the local gun shops of today. I bought my ammo at Mandies , a small neighborhood grocery store, when I was a kid. .410 was $0.10 a round which was about a 150% mark up on each round and normally I could only afford 2 rounds. The shops today still do the same, WWB .40 cal sells at Wal Mart for about $12.50 for 50 rounds, the local gun shops sell it for $29 and up for 50 rounds. Same rip off, just a different era.

Yup... WallyWorld HAD to quit selling guns in the PRK due to some paperwork SNAFU. One version I heard was that one of those minimum wage workers made an honest mistake & "whammo!" Another was that somebody deliberately backdated something. Whatever.

At least WalMart didn't jack up their ammo prices like everyone else. Personally, I patronize shops that give me service & a competitive price. Doesn't need to EQUAL WalMart, but but close. I know how things work.

I can't believe that Walmart can't get ammo in quantity when most every other sporting goods store or even Tractor Supply in my area can. Went into the TS store the other day and they had probably 100 boxes each of 9mm 40sw and 45 on the shelf. Price was about $1-2 higher than Walmart's price but they have it.

What I want to know is if the manufacturers are producing more where is it going?
Manufacturers say it is being bought faster than they can produce. When I asked a Walmart person about that he said that for example instead of getting 3 cases they get like 6 boxes. Now I can't buy it faster than it is produced if it doesn't get to the shelf right?

Just checked again 3rd time this week, same dumb look i get everytime same dumb response ''they don't tell us'' :banghead:

Here in Central Mn., the Walmarts have taken out the sporting goods counters, all they have is a small lockable cabinet with very little ammo in it. I didn't see any handgun ammo, all the stores have remodeled and moved things around and is really screwed up now. The little ammo cabinet is right next the the light bulbs, try to frikken figure that one out.:banghead:

floydster,

I have a friend who lives up in Silver Bay, and he says between Wal-Mart and Al Franken, you guys are screwed......

Fred

My local Wal-Mart actually has Winchester 22LR in 500 round bricks, a decent supply of .270, 30-06, .223, .243, and .308. By decent supply, I mean 5 boxes or so, at least its on the shelf.

Fred, tell me about it, Freaky Frank is a real piece of work, he and all of Washington should be hauled out to the dumpster.
Hope this is not too political.:)

My local Walmart has had about 40 boxes of Federal .40SW ammo on the shelf for about 4 weeks now, and ZERO 9mm. No one is buying the .40SW, I guess because it's 5$ a box than 9mm. So there it sits on the shelf, and it doesn't look like they've even moved a single box for months. And I still haven't seen 9mm there since November.

PX 15,

Iwould never take offense at your remark. You said nothing offensive at all...other than you thought I may be in New jersey , or some other occupied Yankee territory....I am in Georgia ! North Georgia to be exact. In the mountains near Cohutta WMA. I can relate to living in an area where shooting and hunting is a basic everyday event. I CCW my Glock quite often during the warmer months and I OC my 6" S&W 686 nearly every day during deer season...nothing new to the locals here to see someone with a sidearm, so I fully understand your point. I also see your logic behind the WM business philosophy. Hey, I know it isn't the kid at the counters fault and that is why I don't take it out on him. I question the login og WM management of not keeping trained employees in specific areas. Most of the time I get a good clerk at the sporting goods counter, and they know what they are doing....but sometimes I get some real weirdos there too. Always courteous, professional, but never knowledgeable. Ironically enough, the most geeky, nerdy looking kid at the WM
seems to be the best informed, and most knowledgeable.
Send me a PM, and we'll do some bear hunting on Cohutta next season.

Moe

I used to shop at two Walmarts maybe 20 miles apart from each other. One of them always had ammo; pistol, rifle, and shotgun; at the other one ammo was pratically non-existant. I asked the manager at the store with the ammo how was it he always had the ammo when other area stores did not. He said basically it was because he ordered as much as he could every week. He explained that a lot of other managers either didn't want to be bothered with ordering extra ammo, or simply didn't bother ordering ANY at all.

The customers did because Walmart offered a lower price and that's what I want.

I'm glad to know that there is someone else out there who has this opinion. If mom and pops were so great, then why would customers desert them for Wal-Mart?

FWIW:

After lunch today my wife and I drove over to the local Wal Mart (Vidalia, Ga.), which sporting goods section has been notoriously empty of any caliber ammunition I need (32/380/38/9/45) for a while, but as usual I "casually" strolled past the ammo counter, not directly looking at the almost empty shelves in case a direct stare result magically somehow in ALL AMMUNITION vanishing before my eyes, and "lo and behold" what did I spy..

Two 100rd boxes of Winchester White box VP380 ammo...:what:

Yikes...

I'm a Seecamp LWs380 owner, and the VP380 from WalMart is the ONLY fmj round that actually functions and shoots perfectly in my Seecamp. The VP380 is a "truncated" fmj, the same length as the jhp's that are recommended for my pocket rocket (Slivertips/Hydra-Shoks) and it's a lot cheaper than the dedicated jhp's, IF you could find them.

So, I scarfed up one box, and like the gentleman I be I left the remaining box for the next guy...

Still no 38 spec, 9MM or 45ACP on the shelves, but I've got plenty of those stashed anyway.;)

I might be going to buy a Ruger LCP w/CT Lasergrips in the near future, and this will be good stuff to dial the new Ruger in with..:D

Hey, I just finished a great Sunday meal of southern fried chicken, dressing & giblet gravy, with cranberry sauce and a nice slice of Coconut creme pie for dessert...

Then I find 100rds of almost extinct VP380 ammo..

Life is good...

Jesse

I just bought a WWB 100 count at Wally World. There shelves were full except for primers but I can get them right up the road for $3.50 a hundred. I can get them at this Walmart often but two others that are close never have any ammo. There is still some hoarders out there that buy up the whole shelf though. I have been hording some also but I just do it a box here & there so there will be some for the next guy & keep the scare down.

Another Walmart has been haveing 9mm bullets when I go in so I get a few. They are Hornady 100 count but only have 98 in them & it drives me crazy.

One of the local gun shops last summer had a 50 count box of Federal Eagle .22 for $15 a box & now they are $2 again. Thing are getting back to where they were. I just wish I didn"t have to go to three different places to get my reloading stuff & I would love to get regular primers again unless I learn how to load with these magnums before I find them.
