WalMart knives

Even the older "US Made" Bucks were in large part outsourced to Camillus (who was a very reputable maker).

It's not the name on the blade that matters, it's the materials and workmanship. I haven't looked at many Bucks lately, but my bet is they still maintain the quality standards.

Stainz,

Im thinking about purchasing a custom 110 towards the end of summer as a present to myself. Would you mind telling me the turnaround from the custom shop?

i own a few decent knives, but i mostly buy super cheapo knives (from wal-mart) to carry on a daily basis. the ones i buy are a whopping $1.00 at wal-mart. i do not baby them, nor should i. at that price, if i do hurt one (aside from dulling it) i can replace it for a buck six (tax). i have not broken one yet, but i dont try cutting 55 gallon drums either. mine get used for everything from cutting cuticals to scraping engine gaskets, to cleaning fish to cutting meat. when it dulls, i have a wet sharpener that does a great job (for a utility knife) that i just give it a quick dressing and away i go again. i must mention though, the first thing i do when i sharpen the knife the first time is grind off the serrated portion of the blade. the only pourpose i have found for that is cutting tree limbs, and i have saws for that. just my 2 cents worth.

Would I buy Walmart knives and what do I gain with more expencive knives?

To address the original post, yes I would buy a knife at Walmart, but I don't know if I would buy a Walmart knife.

I have bought knives at Walmart, but they have always been a name brand big company like Victorinox or Normark. I love my little sak classic I have on my keyring, and at 8 bucks for a small knife/sissors/screwdriver/nailfile/tweezers/toothpick that is small enough to go anywhere but an airplane is a great deal.

I love the Finish made Rapala fillet knives for 10 dollars. I have both the 4 inch and 6 inch ones, and they are great all around knives. A long time ago I bought a Gerber LST there, and I used the heck out of that knife, and its still doing duty in the 'ol lady's purse.

I've used knives costing hundreds of dollars, and I've used an Opinel that was 8 dollars. After some big disapointments in high dollar custom cutlery, I went back to using low cost effective knives that cut well. My taste in knives is on the peasant level these days. The last straw was when a knife made by a formost bladesmith of the American Bladesmith Society did not cut as well as my Buck 301 stockman made in USA, by Camillus of all people.

So what do you get for the money?

In my own experiance, not much if anything exept bragging rights. It's been 15 years since I sold off all my custom and high end knives, and since then I've used Swedish mora's, Opinels, a Buck pocket knife, a Case pocket knife or two, and a sak or two. Done everything I had to, from field dressing a deer, to cleaning fish, home work projects, and so on. My gun collection has went the same way.

Give me a 10 dollar mora and my old H&R break open 20 gauge, and I'm happy. And I know I'll at least eat good.
