Wanted some input on the Walther P22. likes, dislikes, whatever you can give me. also was looking for ideas for a good concealed gun something that can easily be carried with a t-shirt and shorts.

Walther P22: great ergonomics, fun to shoot, average accuracy, finicky about ammo.

Bersa Thunder 380 CC: small, no-snag design, weighs 18oz, accurate, reliable, crappy sights.

Have one, love it, but it is a plinker pistol, nothing more. If you want real good accuracy, get a buckmark or a ruger. If you want a dependable CC gun, get a centerfire from just about any major maker. Don't trust your life to .22lr. I carry an XD 9 for my cc piece.

Well in my state if you shoot someone with a .22l.r. they better be a zombie. There is a very strict state of mind for using a .22 l.r. for self defence. It is really somewhat in humane. The gun itself is fun as hell. I have 2 and they have nothing but good. They are accurate, ergonomically friendly and cheap to shoot. What's not to love?
Try the Keltec p3at. Awesome gun and you will not get the noose for using it justifiabley.

first firearm I owned, very fun little gun. The early production runs had some problems. Had to send mine in, after that she shot like a champ with good ammo. IMO just use a good hot round like CCI stinger and you wont have a problem other than an ocasionall FTE from being dirty. I prolly put around 15k+{easy, that little bad boy saw ALOT of shooting} rounds through it and sent it in after it had a broken hammer spring and such problems typical with that much wear and tear on moving parts.

Put another 5k+ rounds threw it and the slide cracked. They said send it in and the would replace it IIRC.

Im giving it to a very close friend of mine on wensday for his 21st Bday. He can tranfer the title and send it in to be fixed himself. Everything else in in fine working order after the replaced the hammer spring and the other parts with wear and tear.

Great fun plinker. Needed higher velocity rounds to function reliably. Disassembly was easy...reassembly required an extra provided rod to line things up. Sold mine after a few months with a total of 7 mags! Did I say fun?

Great choice.. Fun to shoot, very accurate,, and with the 3.5 inch barrel fits in your pants pocket un-noticed and comfortable.. Mine eats any brand bullets , but Aquilla then CCI Stingers are my favorites. You'll like it ..

I enjoy mine. It is as accurate as I expected. I suggest you stick with the 3.4" barrel, forget the longer one. So far I've had no problems with feeding both bulk and good ammo. The gun is fun to shoot, has great ergonomics, easy to see adjustable sights, very mild recoil of course, easy to use controls and an acceptable trigger (much better than a Sig Mosquito).

The only other gun I would have wanted instead of the P22 is perhaps a Firestorm (Bersa) .22, but finding one is not easy for some reason. They are the same price, hold 10 rounds and both appear to be good plinkers.

As long as I clean my gun every time I shoot and feed it CCI Mini-Mags, it never fails. I've put somewhere around 1000 rounds of Mini-Mag and Stinger ammo without a single failure of any kind. Put crappy bulk ammo in it and it sometimes doesn't cycle. Its a great little gun and I wouldn't part with it.

That said, I would NOT carry one for self-defense (see my earlier comments on the Bersa Thunder).

There's an entire line of thought on using rim-fire ammo for SD. The question is, Would you trust your life to a rim-fire. I personally would not. I have a 3.4" P22, and as finicky as it is (I've had quite a few Fail to Strips), I wouldn't bet my life on it when a Bersa Thunder or P3AT is as easily availiable. It's a great plinker, and with enough grease on the rail and good ammo, it'll fire fine. But I still wouldn't trust it.

I have a 3.4" P22 and it's quite fun. Cycles everything I put in it reliably and without issue. Mini-mag's seem to be more accurate than the bulk stuff, but it's also like 3x or 4x the price, fun every once in a while. The accuracy isn't spectacular, but it's plenty accurate out to 20yds. I'd really love to go soda can plinking if I knew a place where I could do that, it'd be great at that I bet. :)

P22 Accuracy

A lot of people talk about limited accuracy with the P22, but these are typical off hand results for me using Mini-Mags at 10 yards. Keep in mind that some of this spread has more to do with me than the gun, as I was not shooting off a rest.

theres a ton of threads about this, but I consider them to be throw away guns.
It had one trip back to Walther for misc. repairs after about 500 rounds.
It wore our at about 3,000 rounds. Too many problems to list.

It was a fun plinker for a while, but as I said, it would best be purchased with the mind set that it wont last forever.

P22

Pros
1. Lightweight - great for hiking (reason I bought one)
2. FUN to shoot - probably my funnest gun to shoot next to my BHP.
3. Suprisingly accurate - Don't let people convince you these are otherwise.
4. Ergonomics - Feels great in my hand...but I have small hands.
5. Great warranty & service (see below)

Cons
1. Loud
2. Somewhat finicky on ammo - BUT mine functions perfectly with Remington Golden Bullets. Most people report the same and golden's are very affordable.
3. Durability - my hammer spring broke. They aren't made to be a family heirloom. For a long lasting gun....get a Ruger. They replaced my spring and shipped it back in like 10 days. Very impressive. I paid $0.
I've also heard of front sights wiggling lose and safeties creaping down.

My P22 filled a niche. I wanted a light weight .22lr for hiking and plinking fun. This gun fills it better than any other I could find. Others were too heavy. Those that weren't too heavy were horrible to shoot. (my old PT-22 was not nearly as fun)

As scurtis_34471 points out, accuracy isn't bad. I should clarify what I said, I've seen much better 22LR accuracy out of long target barrels and such, but it's not bad by any measure. Here's my 20yd target with mini-mag's. This is the best I can do, not sure if the gun can do better or not, either way I think it's respectable for a 3.4" 22LR auto.

macanudo14, I hope your consideration for this pistol as a SD/carry handgun isn't a result of what happened at VT. It isn't meant to be a carry or concealed pistol.

The P22 is a plinking pistol, that's it. It's accuracy isn't even near those of other available .22lr pistols.

CWL, I don't see why he would want to buy a p22 because of VT.

The P22 is very popular. You wouldn't think twice is someone asked for a glock 19 to shoot (even tho that was used in VT masacre) so why question the P22? The P22 is simply a gun that been around for awhile and something that many handgun plinkers have purchased ..... I see one often and every gun store I know carries them (used and new).

Tho, I don't own one =p

thank you all for your input. Is there anything else you would recommend in .38 cal.? or are the Bersa Thunder, and the Keltec P3AT pretty much the most reliable I'll find in that category?
