I had a few questions about the Walther P99. I've done plenty of searches but haven' found anything on some specifics id like to know about. I really think this gun looks like a pretty decent piece... and from what i've been hearing it seems to be well-worth the money. I'd be thinking about the 9mm P99AS. w/ the anti-stress variant trigger. I decided i want this or an H&K P2000 w/ LEM trigger. For some reason im leaning toward the Walther. Just seems like a really good pistol. So can anybody tell me:

1. Can I get the AS trigger variant w/ ambidextrous slide release levers? I don't need this feature since im just a normal right handed shooter, but it would just be cool to have. It says it is standard on the DAO trigger variant, so i was thinking maybe it would be optional on the AS variant.... *edit* Also, do both, the AS and LEM trigger, offer double-strike capability incase of a bad primer strike?

2. Is the AS trigger comparable to the LEM trigger offered by H&K?? from what i've read they seem to have similar trigger pulls, and people seem to like them both alot.

any additional info or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No, the A/S does not come with ambi slide release.

The A/S is nothing like the LEM model. It is more DA/SA, and it has a 3rd action - a full length SA pull for the first shot (instead of the DA pull on the 1st shot), if you so desire.

Also, the DAO is not like the LEM variant either. Its more like older style DAO pulls. Heavy and long on every shot. U do not want the DAO - most people do not like it, and U are hard pressed to actually find one. They do not import many due to lack of demand.

If you want an action that is the same on every shot - get the QA. Its like a Glock or XD trigger. I think the QA trigger is too heavy, but at least it is very short.

The A/S is the sweet trigger. The SA pull on it is awesome :)

First, check out the Walther P99 FAQ when you have a chance. See: http://www.praxagora.com/lunde/WaltherP99FAQ/

As already stated, the AS version is not available with an ambidextrous slide stop lever. To be honest, unless you're left-handed, it serves ony as an additional protrusion. I own several HK P2000 pistols, and its one feature that I can easily live without is its ambidextrous slide stop lever. You should be slingshotting the slide anyway, meaning that you manipulate the slide itself, instead of fumbling with a slide stop lever.

In terms of trigger, the QA is closest to HK's LEM. I suggest neither, meaning that I suggest AS for the P99, and V3 (SA/DA with rear-mounted decocker) for the P2000. The P99 and P2000 triggers are different, and I find the SA of both (AS and V3) to be excellent, though the reset of the P99 is the shortest. I know that having a constant trigger pull is compelling, and I enjoy my Glocks just as much as the oher guy. But, there is something about light and crisp SA triggers that is even more compelling, at least for me.

I have two - a P99DAO and P99c. They shoot the best of any auto I have. Very consistent, no problems. Both are made in Germany where making guns is a German forte. Even the DAO is amazingly accurate, though a long trigger pull. I consider them better than Glocks and on par with HKs though a fraction of the price.

thanks for the replies.

Also, are the sights on the P99 dovetailed? Are the sights screwed down instead? Are there any aftermarket sights are available for the P99? (Meprolight, Trijicon, Heinie, etc?)

The front sight is not dovetailed, and front night sights are securerd via a hex screw, like Glock night sights made by Trijicon, Meprolight, and AmeriGlo. The rear sight is dovetailed, but a set screw and detent hold it in place, instead of using a friction-fit.

I shoot the P99 QA and it is surprisingly accurate for a short barreled gun also totally reliable. I like the light even DA pull of their QA trigger.

Does anybody know of any Heinie Straight-8 night sights that might work with the P99? I was thinking maybe the Glock set would work since the front sight is mounted like the P99 front sight. I really think these sights were a huge factor in how well i shot my XD-40 vs. all my other guns. The XD points naturally, but these sights made acquiring the target and hitting it accurately that much easier. I love the Heinie sights, and i really want to get a P99 and a P99c for carry, so it would be awesome if i could put some nice Heinie sights on both of the Walthers i will soon get.
