Hey guys anyone here shot/owns a p99? i am thinking of getting it in 40s&w, the only other 40 i ever shot before was the s&w m&p and the recoil was pretty soft. How does the p99 compare to the m&p recoil wise? is it reliable? is it as good as the other German guns like H&k, or Sig, well Sigs are built here now but you know what i mean. Thanks

I have the .40 AS

Recoil is brisk, but not that bad. I can't compare it to the M&P since I have not fired that. The trigger is absolutely sweet, and the gun is VERY accurate. Mine has a little slide/frame slop, was like that when new. I thought it would effect accuracy, but it doesn't. To top it off, I believe it to be the most comfortable grip I've ever felt.

Come check us out at Handgun Forum.net - We have a ton of Walther P99 fans. I've convinced several people online to buy a P99 in the past few months.

Admittedly, the P99 is the best in 9mm. But, there are some 40 cal fans too :D

Run... Run..Run away!

"Shipwreck" has found this thread.. Next thing you know your head will be spinning and you will have one, if not two, new Walther P99's like I do!

Don't listen to anything he says.. First he'll talk and talk and talk about how "great" P99's are... Fantastic accuracy... Absolutely reliability... Grip ergonomics unequalled... And so on, and so on..

You'll think you would be able to withstand his musings... And just when you think you have the internal foritude to resist...

He'll.....

Post those darn pictures of his "hard chromed" Walthers (and even a SW99) and you will be lost.. Lost I tell you.

I KNOW..

It was just a simply inquiry.. "Is the P99c a good choice for a compact 9 for cc"? I had saved a few hundred bucks to buy a new KelTec PF9, but it was having such teething problems I changed my mind.. Now I've got "some" gun money, and it was burning a hole in my pocket..

Enter "Shipwreck" and his crusade to populate the pistol owners of America with the little advertised, and underappreciated Walther P99's..

Well, in the past I had a super (surplus) Walther PP in 32cal. I sold it in a moment of stupidity, but the die was set.. Walthers were g o o d......

Then I bought a nice surplus P1... Just like my PP, but a 9!! A 9 with history back to WW2.. Sweet shooter, self defense accurate, and g o o d....

Then I bought a surplus Walther P5.. Yikes.. Great pistol.. VERY accurate... 100% reliable.. Sweet.... g o o d.....

So when temptation came a'callin in the form of the silver tongued devil, "Shipwreck" I was lost. Lost I tell you.

I bought a Walther P99c/AS without ever having seen, held, or shot one. Normally a stupid thing to do. But after I saw the results of the first magazine run thru the sweet little P99c/AS I was lost.. Lost I tell you.

And the P99c/AS is such an ugl... uh, beautiful little sucker too..

It's too late for me.. I'm done.. There may still be time for you.. But you've got to run, run NOW...

Did I mention the full size P99/AS I bought after the P99c/AS is just as sweet as the smaller compact.. With 5 more rounds... Gotta love that..

But..

If you simply cannot resist buying what I consider one of the absolute best pistols on the market, please don't buy an "AS" (anti-stress) version, or in 9mm. For some reason the "AS" models are getting hard to find, and I want another P99/AS in nine mm....:D

Best Wishes,

J. Pomeroy

P99 is the best "overall package" gun out there in its class. I prefer the 9mm 'cause the .40 recoil is more noticable -enough to be an issue FOR ME, i.e. COMPARABLY (compared to say a .40 HK P2000, or to a 9mm). Even the P99c is GREAT in 9mm, and would be REAL hard to beat.

I have a P99 and P99c. They are by far my most boring guns to shoot because they are SO accurate. Mine are 9mm but I've shot .40 also. Just plain good design. Wish I'd found them sooner.

I love the P99...had one in 9mm but sold it cause i like bigger bullets. Shot my Friends P99 .40 S&W - loved it. I would get one again if i'd knew of somebody that makes a nice leather IWB Holster for the Redesigned P99.

The P99 is a great gun. I have a P99c in 9MM, and a SW99 full size in .40. I've never shot the M&P, but it should be similar recoil because the size & weight of both guns is very close.

I can tell you that the SW99 .40 kicks less than my Kahr P40.:)

I'm a big fan of the AS trigger.

I just did an IPSC match with an Interarms P99 AS in .40 and a Comp-tac holster. The recoil is a bit stout but not uncontrollable. The gun is accurate as heck and did not have a single problem. The AS trigger is really sweet for that first shot. The 9mm would make a faster piece to get back on target.

I got the first p99 when I opened it up just look at how much the used pistol was shot. Wow! Talk about fine machining! I was smitten just with that and the accuracy turned out to amazing. A worthwhile purchase on a whim.

Also, the P99 fits reasonably well in the El Paso Covert holster made for P226/P220.

You won't regret it!

so is the walther comperable to lets say a glock in recoil or worst? what easy to find guns does the p99 40s&w feels like. So that i could see if i could find one for rent.

I can't really tell a difference in recoil between Glock and Walther pistols. Some have stated that the bore access of the Walther is a bit higher, leading to more muzzle flip.

I own four P99's myself and have two at work, equaling six at my disposal. I will not take any other pistol over the P99, great pistol. I own it in 9mm and 40SW, and to be frank, I barely notice a difference in the calibers, recoil wise. To me the 40SW feels like I am shooting a +P round through my 9mm. They both are extremely accurate and function damn near flawlessly.

The bore axis is a bit highier in the P99 than the Glock, but it is not much of a difference. I owned a Glock 19 in the past and the P99 functioned, shot, and felt better than the G19.

I love my P99 AS in 9mm.

The best gun out there for its price range. I use it to compete in IDPA and it would be my ideal carry piece. I like it more than Glock, HK, and Beretta.

watch out

A buddy of mine has a p99 in .40, and one time at the range, the rear sight left the dovetail at high speed. Most of the parts were recovered and the sight "sort of" works now. I just reminded him that my 1911 has METAL parts and fixed sights. Just like St. John intended.

 Yeah cause no sight (or other part) has ever "left" a 1911

(For the record I'm a 1911 fan)

Todesengel,
A number of makers have holsters for the P99 (K&D, UBG, I believe HBE etc.....), a quick search should find them for you.

I've got a P99c in 9mm and it is just a great shooting gun. Last Sunday at a training class, I got tightest group. The instructor thought that was pretty good, seeing as how there were much fancier guns with longer barrels shooting that day. He just didn't realize how accurate the Walther is right out of the box.

well the p99 looks pretty sweet but after doing some research it looks like they might have a dark side. I have read plenty of complains about craked frames, parts falling off the gun, and slides locking back when they are not sopose to.
On the good side even the people that complained about them said they where acurate as hell, damnit now i am confused.

The only photos of cracked frames I have seen, seems to show intentional damage. Never really heard of cracking besides that. Never heard of parts falling off, and as for the slide locking back prematurly . . . they solved that. It was mostly on the 40SW's, and it was magazine related.

Buy the gun

You are hard pressed to find any gun more universally praised and loved than P99's. Issues are virtually non-existent.

I am A Glock guy when it comes to polymer but I have to say the walther
p 99's are good shooters and fit the hand nice, but I would stick with the pure Walther and not the S&W version .

Just to clear up a common misunderstanding, other than a brief run of .40 caliber P99's sever years ago, they are all pure walther guns. S&W is currently the importer of the P99 and their name is stamped on the slide, but they are not made in any part by s&w. I personally wouldn't be at all afraid of buying a s&w 99 though either.

For whatever its worth I have a p99 and a p99c. They are my favorite handguns and haven't failed me yet in any way.

I have both the S&W Model 99 and Walther P99QA in 9mm. They are both very reliable, excellent ergonomics and surprisingly accurate considering their short barrel length. Both of them beat my Springfield 1911 in 9mm by a mile in terms of accuracy.
