I voted dsa FAL but would be happy with any of them. For some reason the FAL is my favorite. I will say the saiga in .308 is a lot of rifle for the money. I also would like an AR in .308. Heck, I would take any of them to be perfectly honest.

The RRA LAR-8 is a fine rifle and very accurate I had one and loved it. The only drawback to the LAR-8 is the parts are unique only to RRA's design and are not used in the other DPMS/KAC patterned AR10 styled rifles which dominate the market both with parts and accessories.

I needed an ejection port cover hinge pin for my RRA and contacted their customer service in November 2009 for a replacement. I sent them 3 emails and left 3 phone messages, I still have not received a response to this day. With that being said I sold my RRA since I didn't trust RRA anymore to supply the limited parts available for the LAR-8.

Also good luck finding cheap FAL mags for the RRA the best I could find were around 20 bucks and with Magpul cranking out mags for DPMS/KAC patterned AR10s for the same price I don't see the point of the unique one of a kind FAL magged RRA LAR-8.

Screw the toys. Get a Fal, M14, G3, or FN49. Also you want a 21in barrel so you can get all you can out of the 7.62 round.

If your on the budget anything Saiga is probably pretty decent.

I just had to make the same choice. Wednesday I pick up my brand new American made DSA SA58. Can't wait. The M1A and AR10 clone are still on my list though; and quite possibly a Saiga in .308.

"I want one" is an excellent reason. How much money do you want to spend and what do you want to do with it? Your budget is more important.

Is the current price of .308/ 7.62x51 a major factor, even with reloads?

If all else is somehow equal, you will shoot more often with .223 or 7.62x39 (& 5.45x39: AK-74), unless ammo costs do not matter.
Many people choose the gun, then evaluate whether they can afford to use it more than once per month, if that much.

Really could use some more info on your budget - answer will vary depending how much you want to spend.....

Get the Saiga and save the difference for ammo. You will need it. The German DAG stuff gets high marks.

I would assume the OP listed rifles that were in his budget already, or they wouldn't have been on the list. Any way, I picked FAL for the win. Soft shooting, accurate enough, good to 500 yds with 19" of barrel, cheapest magazines of all listed, American made, and if bought new from DSA, can be customized with AR sights(Hampton lower), side folding stock, for a power house .308 in a very nice sized package.
What's not to love?

Still 2 Many Choices!?

7.62

After much investigating and weeding out what I knew to be trash, I decided to get the saiga in 762x39, they are going for about $350 and are easily converted to serve as self defense and hunting.

I'm telling you, a MAS 49/56 converted to .308 is quite the bargain! I owned one and it was a kick bass rifle for that price. I had trouble with extraction at first, but then changed the worn original extractor with the fresh new one that came with the rifle and didn't have any more feeding/extraction issues. Very handy, short, robust rifle. And you can get a quick change scope mount at reasonable costs.
