Want a .22 plinker but, 10/22's don't do it for me.

I love my Winchester 9422 but they stopped making them. Remington has a new bolt action 22 that looks nice. For autos the Thompson Center guns look nice.

CZ are good but they are not very smooth not that I have something against them

They certainly don't have super smooth bolts straight out of the box, but after around 500- 100rds that seems to solve itself and they have a very smooth action.

Some oil and about 100 cycles of the bolt without firing will usually go a long way towards smoothening the action all on its own.

Wow!

I did my typical friday morning ritual. I went to work and got my pay stub, went to the bank and got out my usual amount of money for bills and such and went to my local gun store. I asked to see what the owner could get me a 452 for. He not only had a price for me but, he had one sitting behind the counter. It was a 452 Special. I guess it is the trainer version. He offered me 250.00 for it. A little high but not too bad. I took a good look at it and I was impressed. It felt like a rifle. It had a good amount of heft/ass to it and the wood didn't seem hollow/plastic like the wood on the 10/22 I held. The trigger was a little heavier than the 700 VLS I have before I had a trigger job done on it to get it down to 3.5#'s. The sights were more than adequate to not have to scope it. I then held a 1000.00 Kimber just to see what a 1000.00 .22 was like. The fit and finish were nicer. The bolt was smoother and trigger was on par with my VLS's trigger as it is now but, it is not worth the extra 750.00 especially for what I'll be using the rifle for. I know the price is a little high. I could get the same thing for at around 200.00 off of the internet but I have bought alot of guns from these people and they are great people to deal with so, I might not mind paying the extra 50.00 or so dollars. I'll sit on it for a little bit and see how I feel this afternoon.

Flip.

I observed that the concoction would not have suffered by the omission of the grits,
I had exactly the opposite thought

I have several .22s the 10/22 is my least favorite that beat to hell old Savage is the standard that I judge all others by.
And you will notice that I like Marlin 60s so much I have 2

Sonic I have got to thank you for that comment. I have been looking into a good (second) cheap 22 plinker of my own and I was wondering how those 795 are. ( I saw them for about 100 bucks at walmart) If you have any more good of bad comments about them can you let me know. Thanks in advance.

I know you don't want to hear it, but what about a Krinker Plinker 10/22?
http://www.csmetall-werkes.com/Our_Products.htm

Sometimes you can find them complete on GunBroker for a good price.

10/22's are fun out of the box, but really it's the aftermarket that makes them so popular. You can get a good barrel for $100, put on the stock of your choice, a $30 hammer to smooth up the trigger and you can shoot 3/4" groups at 50 yards. With some tweaking you can get it down to 1/2" or 1/4" CTC.

If you're the kind that doesn't like tinkering (you call yourself a man?!), my second suggestion would also be for the Winchester 9422. Mine works very well for me using ironsights on a rabbit-sized target. I use the 10/22 for detailed work, but I bet the 9422 would shoot almost as well if I put a scope on it.

I'm very partial to remington bolt action .22s. The newer model 504 is priced way to high for a plinker .22. The 541 is a really nice 'adult' .22 and tend to be about as accurate as a production .22 gets. Unfortunately remmy no longer makes these and even used ones cost quite a bit.

A cheap remington bolt action, the 581, can be found used for less than the price of a 10/22, isn't anywhere as nice a 541, but will outshoot most .22s that cost 3x as much.

Anchutz makes a good target gun, kinda pricy but good. I like the marlin 39 series in a lever gun, shoots shorts and long rife ammo interchangably and they are accurate. mossberg used to make a plinker in semi auto that had a synthetic thumbhole stock and grooved for a scope..good plinkers too but hard to find.

Im not attracted to 10/22s either.

My CZ 452 special is fast becoming my favorite plinker. I use it to knock stuff at 100 yards with the tangent sight. It is really cool to just stand, sit, or kneel there with a .22 and hit stuff with suprising regularity (almost every time) at that range. Add in that you can literally shoot it until you are too sore to shoot anymore (I ran out of ammo first but I was getting close) and you have THE plinker.
Also, the trigger is adjustable on the 452 FYI. Mine is real light. My friend took two turns off the mainspring in his and it is REALLY light (although I left mine alone in the interests of better reliability).

I'll be the odd duck and say that I love 10/22's.....but I hotrod all mine. :D A good inexpensive bolt would be any of the CZ rifles.
A couple great lever's would be the Winchester 94/22 or Marlin 39.
A few semi's would be the 10/22, Marlin 60, TC Classic.
