Find an original High Standard. The Sport King should fit your bill nicely. The Mitchell/High Standards have been a hit or miss situation and I would stay away from them.

SIG Trailside, basic model $400, looks like a generic automatic pistol
Bersa Firestorm .22lr $200 based on a "real" .380

A REAL .22 auto

I researched the same issue last year. In January I bought a new Browning Buckmark Micro - Stainless. It is a cinch to take down and clean. It feels good in the hand...like a BHP. The trigger IMHO is the best part. It is smooth, soft and has very little travel. I highly recommed it! My dad has an older full size buckmark. It performs well too.
My buddy has a P22 which is a lot of fun but can't match up with the buckmark in a target shoot.

Wow. Does anyone actually read threads, or just the first post?

I resurrected the thread to say that I made a decision and bought a Browning Buckmark.

Your suggestions are helpful but a bit too late! :)

Baikal IZH 35 is my vote.Under 400 and a true target pistol with fully adjustible trigger and grip too! - dam8
-I have one and love it too but it comes a bit rougher than pampered US customers are used to, and it isn't hardly a knock-around sort of pistol--too many delicate parts sticking off. Additionally (last I saw) the factory grips are RH only and the magazines are 5-shot only. It isn't best at everything.
-For an ISSF gun, the balance is great and the adjustability is very nice though; most every other <$1000 gun doesn't have as many target features.
