Want to move to Texas

tinpig, great reply.
I've only seen one reference re: property taxes. When I was looking for a house outside CA, where I live, I found TX to have some of the highest property taxes in the nation. Someone mentioned 3%. That's *$9,000*
for a $300K property!
But I also hear that they have excellent senior benefits in the form of lower rates.
I've had experience in Texas living (to age 17) and found Longview to be a super nice, pleasant and friendly place. Don't know about IT jobs however.
Good luck

I just moved to Texas from California... been a week so far and other than gun laws being better...

People drive BAD and slow as hell
My car got broken into
registering your vehicle and transfering your license is a nightmare
traffic sucks in San Antonio
Thunder storm caught me off guard and flooded my car
San Antonio is surprisingly hard to find a place to shoot a freaking gun.... found a cool shop but expensive as all hell and you can only use their ammo and membership is outrageous.
Humid as hell
property taxes are 3 freaking percent

Shocked to say, i miss California.... Was thinking about buying a home out here but Probably going to reconsider that one.

Hard to find a place to shoot in San Antonio? Then you ain't lookin' very hard.

- The Bullet Hole
- Bracken Range
- Bexar Community Range
- A Place to Shoot

You can shoot what you want at these places.

Those are all outdoor, inexpensive places to shoot. Lots of opportunities.

Yes, San Antonio has a tremendously high property crime rate. That's why there are billboards urging people to not leave valuable in plain sight. Now you know why.

Property taxes are high because we have no state income tax. That's the trade-off. Shifts the burden onto property owners--which sucks--but it's great if you don't own a house or land!

In Texas, we pay $125,000 for a $500,000 California home.

Quit whining and go shoot some targets!

That's because, in turn, we have ZERO state tax.

:D

New Hampshire is similar in that there are no state income or sales taxes, but the property tax is high. The government will get its money one way or another. I would probably be looking in the 100K-150K range for about 10 acres with some sort of house on it. Preferably not a mobile, but I am flexible. It is just me, so size and bedrooms don't matter a whole lot. What would I be looking at for taxes outside some of the larger cities?

Possible opportunity in Bryan/College Station

West Corporation www.west.com has a Call Center in College Station and advertises jobs periodically and has been advertising recently. Won't be a fabulous salary but might let you get to Texas. If you go 10-15 miles outside the city limits you should be able to find what you want in the way of property. There is a community college here - Blinn that would let you get a two year certificate and they cater to working students.

I have 20 acres out in the county but only shoot pistol on it as I have a natural short range along side a creek that runs along one side of the property. I will go to a commercial range for rifle shooting other than rimfire.

Kingofthehill (RE: post #72)... you forgot to mention a couple things.

Texas also has crazy weather. It can go from 70 degrees to snow in hours. We don't just get rain, we get floods. If you leave the windows down on your car, expect it to get wet (and burglarized). It hails stones as big as grapefruits. We get hurricanes, tornado's, deadly lightning and wild-fires. But the weather isn't the only thing that is crazy here. We also have all kinds of poisonous snakes, scorpions, black widow and brown recluse spiders, tarantulas (but the tarantulas are kinda cute... all fuzzy) and mosquito's as big as hummingbirds. One bite and you'll need a blood transfusion! Just about everything that lives here has a stinger or thorn.

But those are just some of the things I love about Texas.

Texas stretches from Mountain to Valley... from piney woods to desert... from the plains to the ocean. It has the most beautiful and diverse landscape of any state in the nation, and the most beautiful women in the world. We are the only State that has ever kicked another Country's butt. In Texas, we believe in common sense, God, Guns and Guts. We love freedom here and the alternative never has, and never will be acceptable to Texans. Personal responsibility and limited government are principals that we live by.

We welcome good folks that come from other States to come, work hard, grow roots and contribute to what we have built. Just don't bi*ch about it when you get here. ;) :)

PS... cold beer helps with the heat. :D

TxBaaylea,

Thank you for the link. I will be sure to follow up on that.

I don't miss the dangerous critters in Texas, but I do everything else. I remember the hail too, that wasn't fun...

Well, it looks like I will be moving before or in early November. I just want to get my rental property up here a tenant and I will be able to go. I might be able to stay with my sister for a short while, so it looks like I will be staying in Georgetown for a while. (North of Austin)

Amarillo and Lubbock are the ones in my mind. Great deer and hog hunting there too.

I have lived in Texas and traveled all over the state over a period of about 10 years. Texas is okay if you don't mind the heat. Lived in DFW and Houston areas. I got out because I found myself always driving north for camping in Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma which from Dallas was an 6-8 hour drive depending on where you are headed.

Economy is good overall considering what it's like in most of the other states the last year or so. Check out Tennessee. Like it better than Texas but I'm a nature and geography freak. Prettiest area of Texas for me was the Texas Hill Country and I like the Lufkin area.

I live in San Antonio, if you wanted to live somewhere outside the city where you could have some land check out Adkins or Lavernia. Traffic really isn't that bad as long as you avoid the 281/1604 area. North of 1604 and into Stone Oak is a nightmare. 410 heading east is pretty bad as well. Other than that, I do highly suggest avoiding bracken range at all cost. That guy has a giant you know what stuck up his you know where. The bullet hole is a lot better in my mind. Plus at bracken you get charged $7/gun. The bullet hole charges $8/per person with no limit on how many guns. Which is good if you have a lot of guns and no friends like I do. Lol.

When I get to Texas, what is the procedure for getting my drivers license fast? I want to get those MA plates off my car ASAP. Once I establish some kind of residency, I want to apply for my CCW.

driver license is easy, sit the test, eye exam, get plastic. License plates require a "green slip" comes with safety inspection prior to going to courthouse you get the car inspected at a service place, 15 to 35 dollars, then show liability insurance, pay about 75 bucks, get plates.

Test? I have to take a test? I have been driving since I was 16. I think I got it down pat by now. That is strange how they would need to test you again. Thanks for the info, though.

How hard is it to pass TX car inspection. I know in MA, they will even reject a 2010 BMW for almost anything. I shouldn't have any problems, but I may want to buy a used truck in the future. I already have insurance on my car, so I am good there.

I work in Austin and drive about 45 mins. to work from home. Look for land east of Austin not west of south because it's very expensive. I didn't have to take any test other than an eye test. Also as far as inspection, as long as you don't register the car in travis county (Austin) it's simple to pass inspection.

SHiftyer1,

Thanks for that info. It really helps me understand what to expect. I was planning on moving east of Austin; it would be a lot closer to familiar territory. There also seems to be a lot of property in the area. I am looking for 10+ acres with a house (means septic and well already there and gives me a place to stay) for under 150K. If I find the kind of work and pay I am looking for, I should be able to swing that loan. My credit should be really good. I own property up here, my car is paid off and worth 9K, I have no credit blemishes, I only have about 5K in a student loan. I also have cash and investment assets to use as collateral. I hope I can get this to work.

I just need to find out what a 2003 Nissan Sentra 4Cyl can pull for a trailer, so I can move the basics. PODS wants $2600+ to move my junk. Not worth it. I could buy this stuff again for that cost. I think my best bet is to buy an enclosed trailer, attach it to my car, and move the basic stuff. I can then sell the trailer after I no longer need it if I need the money.

Maybe I should call ACORN for a loan?? LOL

The only "test" I took was a vision screening, gave them my Alaska license and was good to go.

eatont9999,

Well they will check to see if the bailing twine holding the bumper on still has half it's strands intact. You might be asked to touch up the Bush/Cheney 2000 sticker if is faded. Make sure you have at least one NRA or TSRA sticker displayed in the window. At least two tires have to be of the same manufacturer or size, and the duck tape holding the coat hanger used for a radio antenna must be fairly new. If you got that stuff covered you should be good.

But what ever you do, get that Mass plate off ASAP!!

On a different note, it is good to hear that your states favorite senator has gone over a month now without a drink :)

Welcome to Texas,

just stay clear of austin if you can.nothing but freaks & dem-0-rats:D:D.

I have been all over this planet and texas is it.

A big welcome.enjoy:) get some real texmex and buy some guns.

San Marcos is nice but is getting full of college students. I would suggest a smaller town around there. Martindale, Lockhart are nice and are not a bad drive to anywhere on the I-35 corridor.
