A few years back I converted my Saiga Sporter 7.62x39 to an AK-47 pattern rifle by buying a conversion kit, pistol grip, and a TACTICAL QUAD-RAIL. I had a gunsmith assemble it all. Now I want to take off the quad rail and pistol grip only keeping the the Saiga able to accept standard AK mags. I want to do it myself. Question: I don’t recognize the kind of screw/bolt used to fasten the quad rail on—below are some pictures. Can anyone advise me what tool I will need to remove the Quad rail and pistol grip? Any suggestions on how to remove the pistol grip and Radlock? I still have the old Saiga parts. Thanks for any suggestions.

The pistol grip has a bolt up inside it. Simply undo that bolt and the pistol grip comes off.

That said.. You do know you are going to have some unsightly holes and a really wonky and goofy trigger if you go back to sporter config? Unless you restore the whole fire control group to the sporter config you are going to have a beast of a time pulling the trigger.. and then you still have the holes to deal with.

Those bolts are the common Allen head type. Your local auto parts store, Lowes, Home Depot, etc will have a set of those for sale in inch and/or metric sizes.

And I agree with the poster above. You're going to have some issues with the reverse conversion. only you can decide if dealing with those issues is worth the trouble.

thanks for that--maybe I will just put the old forestock back on and leave the pistol grip

Mine has the pistol grip with normal hand guard and Zhukov stock. Very easy to shoot. If you need an original Saiga stock I may still have mine.

Thanks I have the original stock still.

Yes I made a mistake with the modification--I should have kept the original stock and the original trigger. I wanted it to look 'cooler", LOL

Apex Gun Parts had Saiga take-off stocks for *cheap* a while back. If they're out, try one of the conversion shops, or ask on some place like forum.saiga-12.com where a lot of members are into conversions.

Every now and then you see some Vepr take-off wood stocks. I'm not sure if they're a direct bolt-on to the Saiga, though. Actually, I kind of like the original plastic Saiga stock.
