been debating between the ruger 10/22 or henry .22lr lever. both are great guns. I love to dirt shoot and plink so this will be the main purpose of the little rifle. maybe a little squirrel gun too. all of my friends have a 10/22 already and i have plenty of semi auto firearms. I'm leaning more towards the henry cause i don't have one and it would go great in my collection. my younger brother has one and i really liked it. until i saw the price i've been wanting one since. it's a tough one cause i want them both but still saving money for school this fall. I know if i get the ruger i'll just spend more money on parts like a dress up kit and extra extended mags. i really love the fit and finish on the henry.

I know this probably doesn't help much since you've already seen it but the henry is a great gun.
Are you refering to the golden boy or just the basic 22 lever? I have the basic one. It's a perfectly good gun for about $250. A few things that you should know about it are both barrel bands are plastic and the sights are kind of big and clunky for 50 yard shooting. The plastic barrel bands are no problem unless you hit them with a hammer or something and even with its original sights it will shoot a group that will stay in a playing card at 50 yd. if I do my part. I love the slick action just like you noticed. I hope this might help you somehow.

Just so you know, Henry stopped using plastic bands/sights several months ago. Unless it's old stock, any new Henry should be sporting metal bands/sights.
And Henry will send one a new metal bands and sight to replace the plastic ones installed on earlier models. And there is no charge. And they have great customer service. And they are made in America. And apparently, sometimes Mr. Imperato (the owner) will answer the phone. And it is a great shooting rifle, with a very satisfying "snick" when the action is operated (try it if you haven't).
Some owners have fitted peep rear sights and modified the front to achieve the correct height. Take a look at Rimfire Central in the Henry section.

Good news about the Henry rifles. The Browning BL-22 is an awesome lever action 22 but out of your stated priced range (around $500). Regards,

I got the inexpensive Henry last year (about $230 from WalMart) and I have not looked back. I like it a lot better than the 10/22 I used to have. It's more accurate and working that smooth lever is so dang gratifying. I will top it with a decent rimfire scope one of these days.

Before i give you my two cents it is only fair that I tell you up front that I am a Lever Action junkie.. ,...and if you buy that Henry you will become one too.
Both rifles mentioned in your OP are great. I have the Henry and the 10/22, and I love them both. ( i'm also a 22lr junkie)

For Customizing then 10/22 is king....(probably has more options than even the AR)
For every thing else the Henry is just more fun. That lever is as smooth as they come.
Mine fires anything you feed it . It is light weight, and Oh did I mention its a Lever Action

Between just those two, and taking your statement that you have several autoloaders already, I would say get the Henry. Tube mags rock and that would be a fun plinker.
However, lately I have had a desire for a pump .22, prob the Remington 572. Pump just seems like it would be a bit faster than lever.

I own two BL22s, a Grade II carbine and the long octagon silver nitride, love 'em
no other rimfire levergun action quite like 'em, except mebbe some 9422/9422Ms (some few of which are Mirokus also)
love everything ever was with a Browning logo on it, it's a woobie thing you know
but the accuracy nothing to brag on, just fun unlimited; way better accuracy than any NIB 10/22 I have seen yet, yet well short of what a typical Marlin 60 will do

I've owned a bunch of 10-22s but sold/traded them for one reason or another . but currently have a savage, Marlin, and Henry. I'd say out of the three that the Henry is my favorite. I mounted a 4x power scope on it and it's a really nice shooter. It handles all types of 22 ammo, and shorts run fine and very quiet when you want to be discrete on where you shoot.
I'll have to call/email them about getting the metal barrel bands, hadn't heard they would send them free. Last I heard they were about $20 or so. I agree about Henry's customer service; I emailed them to find out the production year of mine and had a reply back in an hour or so. American made and a great warranty.

I was just reading about the trigger shim and tried it out. I didn't have any metal so i used paper from a cigarette box. man it really works, it just reduces the space the sear travels to a minimum. no more creep but still it's a heavy trigger... perhaps a lighter spring?
I think the people that appreciate the 10/22's the most are the ones that leave them as is from the factory and shoot the crap out of them
I've found customizing rifles to be ultimately unfullfilling. You finish and you shoot it and all you can think about is the next one you build.
Get a rifle that comes how you want it from the factory is my suggestion.

What's been said about the 10/22 is true. Accuracy to a very great deal depends on if you got a decent trigger, and are willing to do the accuracy testing to determine what it wants to eat. But, you can get another barrel for about $10.00 if you let it be known you want one, and trigger upgrades aren't all that expensive, provided you don't just throw money at the problem.
The Henry is a slick little devil. But, it's got a heart of pot metal. Nice lookin' shell & all that, but the innards are something other than steel & brass. Zamack I think.
If you want a lever .22 you can know that your great grandkids can shoot, get a Marlin model 39A while you still can. Remington bought Marlin & fears that Remington will "improve" the product are putting 39 prices on an upward journey.
However, I vote with Paulo. CZ452, hands down the best of the .22 rimfires being sold in America today for price/quality ratio. Do the accuracy testing with a CZ & you may very well put a kink in the shorts of the bench guys at the local range.
