I have a tapco galil style hand-guard installed on this WASR. I cannot get the fore-grip retainer to lock closed. This is the part that has the sling attachment. This part will slide up and down the barrel, and is very annoying. I know I need to modify the Tapco hand-guard, but I don't have a dremel tool or mechanical know-how to get it done.
I really want to upgrade the parts on this gun, but it sounds like it is necessary to modify the parts to get them to fit on these guns. How much do you think a gun smith would charge to modify the hand-guard to fit right?

You could try sanding it down since you do not have a dremel. This does not take "mechanical know how". Do you have a friend with something to sand or grind it down? This hardly requires a gun smith.

One of mine did the same thing. I had to sand/dremel the receiver end of the forearm so it would fit properly. Where ever you see the Tapco unit touch the receiver, file it down. You may also have to sand/grind down the other end (muzzle end), but I never did that on mine (three AKs with Tapco Galil hand guards).

use a dremel if available. i only had to lightly grind on mine for a few seconds and i was able to get it to lock in with a multitool and not much pressure

If you don't have a dremel, use a small flat metal file, which you can get for a few dollars from an auto parts store, Lowes, Sears, Walmart, etc. Get one skinny enough to fit where you need it to fit.

I own a dremel but used a hand file for mine; the dremel is great for curves but a flat file works better for flat surfaces and square notches. Just go slowly, take off a little at a time, and keep checking against the rifle to see where it's not fitting. It's a whole lot easier to take more material off than it is to put it back...
