Found a WASR 10 locally for $299. Has rough wood furniture, as I've been told they all do. That doesn't matter to me.

1) Is this a good price?

2) What is required to get double stack 30-rd mags to work in a WASR 10? How much does the upgrade really cost? What tools do you need?

3) Is it cheaper to get a WASR 10 & convert to double stack or is it cheaper to get a Saiga and convert to AK variant with pistol grip, etc.? How much would a gunsmith charge to do the latter (convert Saiga to PG, etc.)? I am not super mechanically inclined with guns yet.

The WASR 10 I shot came with a double stack magwell. And yes, that is as good of a price as you will find short of building an AK from a parts kit.

You can get already converted WASR-10 for around $50 dollars more, if your willing to do a little searching.

Or you can just find a local dealer who will do transfers, usually less than $30, and order from here http://www.classicarms.us/. $279.95 for a WASR set up to take 30 round magazines plus accesories.

It sbeen a while since I looked, but IIRC this is how it goes.

WASR-1 7.62x39 single stack

WASR-2 5.45x39 single stack

WASR-10 7.62x39 double stack

WASR-12 5.45x39 double stack

Assuming my memory is holding that should help. also $299 for just a 10 and no toys seems like a good buy. Mine came with an ammo pouch, oiler, cleaning kit, two mags, and a euro style bayonet for $409.95. That includes transfer fee, markup, and tax. I love my FFL:D

My WASR 2 from AIM was already converted though the mag wobble is pretty bad.

Has anyone seen an unconverted WASR 2? If it is cheap I might want another one.

318 bucks and you can be out the door with exactly the same stuff at Dunhams.

So the WASR 10 should be good to go for double stack 30 round mags? Cool! Thanks for the info, guys! Sounds like it's a pretty good deal. I'll have to tack on sales tax (6%), but after shipping & FFL fees, it probably would be a wash. Plus, I really like this little gun shop and want to support them.
