wasted 17 HMR

for trajectories sake, you can basically say this; however your 22 acts at 100, the hmr does it at 200- that is speed, trajectory and wind drift.
a hmr zero'd at 100 yds, typically drops 2 to 3 inches at 150, and about 7 inches at 200 yds. it also typically raises .5 inches or less, depending on your scope height, at 50 yards, with a 100 yard zero. So you can see, that out to 150 yds, with a low mounted scope, this round shoots extremely flat. Too bad we didn't get the origionally tested 17 hmr stuff tested. I read somewhere, that they were heavier rounds, 20 or 25 grainers, doing 2500 fps, and the 17 grainers were closer to 3000 fps.

now then, anyone who knows me, knows I prefer the 17mach 2, but if cost were not an issue, since I could shoot about 500 dollars a year or more, in the cost of hmr ammo than mach 2, and I did not care about meat destruction, there is no doubt I would shoot the hmr over the mach2.

I love my 17 HMR for prairie dogs, jack rabbits, and punchin' holes in paper. It is very, very accurate, and the 20gr. XTPs work great. I don't think the 17 ricochets near as bad as any of the .22s when shooting in rocky terrain. Try the different brands of ammo. My Savage loves the Hornady 17 and 20 gr loads, but it doen't shoot the Federal or Winchester near as well.

Works well for prairie dogs for me out to about 160 yds or so, if there isn't a big wind blowing. The noise level for the 17HMR seems to be low enough that it doesn't spook all the close-in dogs when you start shooting. After cleaning up out to 150, switch to the centerfires. I have seen some awfully good shooters take long shots with the 22LR, but I'm about at my limit at 120 yards or so. I can get another 40 or 50 yds out of the 17.

The 17HMR can teach you a ton about compensating for wind drift and bullet drop on a short range (like 200 yds). There's no good reason a 22LR can't do the same thing, but I find the 17 more fun.

I don't hunt squirrels with it (too much damage when that little bullet explodes pretty much on impact). I don't plink with it. I have found the 17HMR to be a "serious" rifle with specific, if limited, purpose.
