I appreciate all of the great input guys. I think the Pelican 1200 series in bright yellow is in my future http://www.pelican-case.com/1200.html ... This should fit my Ruger P89 I think (I only want one gun, and thats the one.... think it will fit?) at $45 it comes greatly recommended from you guys and others, and that's not a lot for a great case....
I couldn't find the Waller and Sons cases mentioned.... links? smaller and lighter are key....
I ended up dumping my yak in the ice cold water with my Ruger in the deck bag and had to break it down completely to dry it out... *sigh*... deck bags are water resistent, not water proof...
IIRC? (assuming that means "If I Remember Correctly") I don't know when you were in the BWCA last, but you are incorrect as of the last 10 years at least. Firearms are allowed in the BWCA, as is shooting for recreation (although that is asked to be kept to a minimum), and hunting, as I have done so on several occasions.... hunting bear in particular, so yeah, I've encountered a few bear myself up there... lol.... but they have never taken a single thing from my camp (proper food procedures are integral to avoidance of bear in your camp)... but they come every time to my bait station.... ... I have been stopped by Rangers on several occasions, but I have never been searched in over 25 years of going there. I think that they could, as Game Officers (although they are not DNR, but Federal employees, so maybe not), but they have all been very polite, checked the permit, and left us alone.... are you sure you're talking about the same place I am?
I don't intend to scold you, but I agree with JohnKSA that you did the abbsolute wrong thing training that bear to "take whatever he wants" and should have chased the bear off with a very loud sound (might I suggest a firearm next time ... now that you know they are legal... )

PO2Hammer said:IIRC, last time I was in the BWCA, firearms are strictly prohibited, and the Rangers aren't shy about searching.
I've had three encounters with black bears up there, and all were resolved peacefully by surrendering whatever food the bear wanted.
One of the three times the bear wanted our fish, so we threw a few raw fish in his direction, no sale. He walked right in and proceded to eat our fried fish, the batter and all the tarter sause we had.
I guess it proves the old saying "what does a bear eat? ... anything he wants.'
