TORONTO/640TORONTO - Some T-shirts being worn by young people in Toronto are irritating Toronto cops.

The shirts have a picture of a gun, with the captioon, "Rule 1: Be Armed.''

The shirts aren't illegal, just in bad taste.

Sgt. Rob Hargan says kids wearing them will be "hassled.''

But 640 Toronto crime expert and host of The Beat Craig Bromell says that's about all police can do because there's nothing illegal about them.

There are suggestions that two of the shirts have been seized.

Bad taste? Only in Sheepton.

Its here too, I remember a thread of an Attorney getting hassled for just walking down the road.

Time to talk to a good, in fact very good, constitutional lawyer before the fact, and find out what type of info to get on the offending officers.

I suppose it's foolish to even harbor such radical ideas, but ... should not police have better things to do than hassle people about things which are NOT illegal?

This hardly seems like a constructive approach to teaching anyone (children, teens, or adults of any age) to respect the law and the police.

Right after Bush was first elected...

My friend had a T-Shirt with the round circle and Cross Hairs in it. Their was also a big face shot of George W. Bush. The circle + cross hairs was on top of his face. Underneath that the words said: Not My President!

My friend always wore that t-shirt, and got harassed by several people and authoritive figures.

However there were plenty of people who loved the shirt, however their was this particular 35-40 year old lady in a Barns and Noble reading a book, She glanced up read the shirt pointed and said " me too... me too"

^ You'd probably disappear in the middle of the night and never be heard from again for wearing a shirt like that these days.

I would say that one shirt implys killing our president and the other owning a gun to protect yourself. And there related how?

If there is nothing illegal about them, why bother to do anything at all? Are Toronto Police public censors now?

This is "probably" technically not illegal but does seem to advocate assasination of a public official. Hopefully your friend is not upset with Pat Robertson.

Excellent point.

Let us remember that these are CANADIAN police in whatever jurisdiction this took place in. Please don't let this degenerate into another anti-cop/anti-government/libertarian bitch fest.

I know several members of L.E. who own shirts like this, and are avid shooters. Please let's try to avoid the 'broad brush' approach....the very same approach the antis use when discussing us.

Oh...and 'sheeple' is a stupid word. :fire:

Hastling people because they are wearing a politically incorrect saying is just one moe example of tyring to force people to think a given way. Good sheeple.
Follow the heard, don't be different, don't think for yourself.

That T-shirt could be interpreted as as an implied threat against the President, which is a felony.

There is such a thing as poor taste. Like wearing a codpiece. Or showing your ass. Or cotton shirts and pants so thin they are almost see through with nothing on under them (saw that today). Or wearing a shirt depicting the president in a gunsight. I am a dem and dont like Bush but I dont like the shirt. I was driving down the road a couple years ago with my young daughter and there was a truck with a big bumper sticker in front of us that said F--- YOU, F--- YOU, and F--- YOU AGAIN! I got the license plate and called the cops; they would not do anything. And I see people with skulls- deaths head symbols I call them. Little kids wearing shirts like that (with their parents). That symbol is very offensive to me for several reasons; what can you do? Freedom of speech or freedom to be trash?

Um. Do I really need to get out a box of crayons and draw out the difference between a t-shirt which simply reads "Rule 1: Be Armed" and one that has a picture of the president with crosshairs superimposed over it?

Beren, Right, I was not refering to the cross hair one. Actually, that could bring the secret service to your door.
Like it or not there is a limit to free speech, if you yell fire in a crowed theater you're going to be arrested, and rightly so.
Advocating violence to any specific public person is not a good thing.

Yep, big difference between making a specific threat, and wearing something with a general idea. While it probably isn't something he should be jailed for (unless he actually meant to shoot him), it wouldn't suprise me if he was roughed up a little bit.

A T-shirt isn't and shouldn't be considered a threat to national security.

If it was such a threat, why not arrest the manufacturer and throw away the key?

You have the right to wear whatever you want on your own time, but be prepared to "reap the whirlwind". Personally, I'd rather stay in "stealth" mode.

Just make sure he is well versed in the Canadian constitution, as this all happened in Canada.

Mike ;)

About time! Cracking down on you t-shirt wearing hippies! Don't know if you guys have spent a lot of time in our neighbor's house but something like this is akin to open rebellion in Canadian terms. :D

Rule No. 1: Be Armed; only in Canada would you have to restate the obvious. Only in Canada would anyone be upset with someone proclaiming the facts of life. :D

The shirts have a picture of a gun, with the captioon, "Rule 1: Be Armed.''

The most important question has not been asked here ... that question is; Where can I get one of these shirts!?

Question 2: Is Col. Cooper and/or Mark Moritz getting any of the proceeds from these?

Also in the Canadian example, the harrassing is being done by representatives of the state.

In the distasteful Pres. in the Crosshairs example, the "harrassment" by "several people and authoritative figures" sounds to me like the excercise of free speech.

Funny how so many think only Lefty's get to excercise free speech.

A shirt with the Bush (or any US president) in the crosshairs should not be allowed anymore than someone saying they are going to kill the president. Freedom of speech has its limitations. This is no longer free speech.
