Well I picked up my new Weatherby Vanguard S2 in .308 a couple days ago. Wow!! this has got to be the best synthetic stock I have ever seen on a factory rifle. I love my Savage rifles but not real crazy about the stocks on them and have bought some aftermarket stocks for some of them but I think I will leave this one alone. I love nice wood stocks but any more unless you want to spend $1000 or more for a hunting rifle you pretty much have to go with synthetic. Even the stock on my Rem 700 is no comparison to this Weatherby. Hope to buy a scope for it in the next week or two and take it out and put some rounds through it. Thanks to everyone that gave me input on these rifles.

I love my Wby s2 mine is in the 257 Wby mag. The stock is great I wish it was free floated and in thick brush that light grey colour will show scratches. If your a savage fan your going to love this Wby! It's simply a better gun. Myself I'm not a savage fan but I choose my Wby s2 over all my guns every deer season.

When you get to hunting with it let us know if you find the rubber inserts to be "grabby". I have one in 308 and I like it. It's a little heavy and I honestly like the Savage safety better. But overall it's a great rifle.

I actually have it across my lap right now in the deer stand. Slow morning. Thanks TapaTalk

The grips are a bit grabby I have huntes with mine for 3 years now fromsitting in the stand to hiking around and it hasn't proved to be a problem.

Do the S2 series take Rem700 bases?

Also, how smooth is the bolt? It's fluted it looks like.

And how is the 3 pos safety? And the 2-stage trigger?

And lastly, how is the Sako-style extractor?

The bolt is fluted the safety is great I'm not sure what action they designed it off of but it's very accurate. The trigger takes some getting used to its not like any trigger I've ever used but I love it it's by far the best trigger on a factory rifle I've ever got mine came out of the box set at 3 1/2 lbs real easy to adjust now it's set at 2 3/4 lbs. The first stage of the trigger is so light it's immeasurable then you feel the second stage and boom. I also like the right hand palm swell put that with that trigger and it makes you squeeze the trigger instead of pulling or jerking it. I haven't had an issue with the shell ejecting.

I have been extremely tempted to get a carbine length 7mm-08. I don't the shorter barrel length will affect it as a hunting rifle. None of the stores around here carry them so it would most likely be bought through Davidsons and I would pick it up at a participating dealer.

If memory serves it does take the 700 bases.

Looks like a great choice, congratulations! What is it that you like about the synthetic stock? How does it compare to others?

Instead of 700 bases, get the the Talley lightweight one-piece mounts on the Weatherby website. They're less expensive than buying rings and bases separately and are awesome.
I've got three Vanguard Series 2, in .223, .308 and .257 WBY Mag.

I have one in .243. The stock seems stronger and more rigid than something like the Remington SPS.

Dunno what the comments are about the rubber inserts. I used mine on an antelope hunt this year and it was excellent

It's not free floated and it's the same barrel as the the mark 5
Mark V barrel is 26", the VS2 barrel is 24". These are #2 contour barrels, and Weatherby doesn't free float any barrels with less than a #3 contour. Regardless, the Vanguard Series 2 are guaranteed to shoot .99 MOA or better three shot groups at 100 yards, using Weatherby or other premium ammo. All three of mine routinely beat that.

Cottswal . The synthetic stock on this rifle is very rigid there is no flex in it like my savages and remmy have. I love the grip inlays they put in the grip and forearm area. I also like the palm swell and the raised cheek piece is very nice in my opinion.

I have the VS2 youth model in 308, which is now called the compact. Even though it has the bottom of the line stock it is still incredibly stiff. I agree with the trigger being the best of any firearm I own, but I'm partial to two-stage triggers.

If you ever get the urge to shoot cast bullets, the twist on the S-2s are 1:12" which will allow you to shoot lead at higher velocities.

I get MOA with cast bullets. Performance that I can't duplicate with any other rifle I own.

There's a certain Youtube reviewer who reports getting better accuracy with the shorter barrel vs. the longer barrel in S1s. I have the shorter barrel in .308 (S2) but I am no pro with the rifle so my results aren't going to help anyone. Shorter barrel makes it easier slipping around in the woods though and getting into/out of blinds.

I found that the Beretta Tikka 3 Lite 30.06 has the smoothest bolt action out of all the other rifles in this category.

Well I finally got it scoped and got to take it out and do some shooting. Wow! I love this rifle. It has by far the best factory trigger on it I have ever used. Stot some Nosler 155gr hpbt's match grade @100yds and the group was just a hair over a 1/2". Now I am going to try and work up some of my own loads for it. So far my favorite factory bought rifle that is in a synthetic stock.

Where is this rifle made?

I still like the Beretta Tikka 3 Lite in 30.06 made in Finland. Guaranteed 1 inch groups at 100 yards.
