Well I bought some R.I.P. ammo for only $40 per 20 rounds...

Sorry to drag out an old thread but I only saw these G2 RIP rounds last week and thought that the 'idea' of them interesting.

Looking at their results at Lucky Gunner I see that the fragment shards only go about 4-8". The actual back of the bullet goes about 11-13". But if you look at the photo of the gel test, wow, those things go in all directions. If they could create one of these that could penetrate the shards to 12" and the back of the bullet to 16", well, that would be hard to argue with.

And also, the actual round is quite light.

So I'm assuming that the little shards peel off early because they need a lot of velocity to work. The "fix" for this round would be 50% more weight, both for the base of the bullet and the shards and deeper penetration for both. I'm not sure that is physically possible.

I’ll stick with my underwood. As for targets watermelons work great. Could also use some modeling clay. Post pics of whatever you use.

I have seen these, I believe the depth was consistent 13/14 inch penetration, with several fragments in a 6" diameter. My nephew has them loaded in his CC. Im not sure about these for self defense, as im not trying to totally kill the attacker,
I just want to get them to stop.... (injur and incapacitate, call 911, and send him to the hospital then jail) not the grave..

I don't see how a large through and through is somehow outdone by shallow penetration... seems like this is more likely to kill, and less likely to incapacitate

I am not sure this is the proper way to go about thinking about SD. Plenty of threads here, some very recent, that discuss this. If you are going to shoot someone, better be prepared for them to die, regardless of the cartridge or specific bullet you use.

I paid $32.99 +tax each for two boxes of Hornady Critical Defense .44 Special the other day. It is what it is. It’s premium ammo that is shoot 1 box and carry the other for a long time. I watched a video from Paul Harrel (YouTube) a while back about why he doesn’t like boutique ammo as nobody ever shoots it and tend to store it in the gun for decades like gold nuggets. Has a point!

I had a friend who had to shoot a dog that was attacking his cows. He used the R.I.P. round in 9mm. The results were not good for the dog. Dead right there and bloody wound. I was impressed.

Not to doubt your experience, but I had the opposite happen. We were in the desert and a dog ran in front of my truck. The dog weighed about 60 pounds. Unfortunately I could not stop in time and hit the dog. I was horribly injured but not dead. A buddy of mine happened to have RIP ammo in his Glock 19 and shot the dog in chest to put it out of misery. After two rounds the dog was still alive and in extreme pain. I had to hold the dog down to get a clean shot into the head. This worked and thankfully the dog was dead. It was a horrible experience and made me sick. We did not autopsy the dog but the rounds clearly did not penetrate to a useful depth. This is a very limited experience but enough to let me know that I would not trust these rounds.

Edit to add that this was about three years ago, so maybe the ammo has changed.

Every situation is different. Bullet performance is never a static scenario. I don’t think I would want shot by it either way. I have a box of 9mm and .45 acp stashed away. I consider it a novelty item.

I thought I was living comfortably in my retirement but at two bucks a hammer drop, I don't think I'd ever shoot them, TG for the reloading bench!

Bang, bang, bang... There's two gallons of gas to feed the Silverado :)
