So far, I've been going to the trap range every Sunday for two months plus now, play between one and four rounds of singles trap, depending on how much ammo/how much money I have on me at the time

today, I shot two rounds, 18 and 19, not as good as last week, but we also had a gusty headwind that wreaked havoc with the flight characteristics of the EOF's, typically, just as you'd get on target, they'd catch a gust of wind and *jump* upwards, I actually enjoyed that, that level of "unpredictability" added a nice level of realism to the game

Today was also the first game I was able to break the special white "Free Game" disc, not only did I break it, I *DUSTED* the sucker :D , we have white targets placed randomly in the machine, and when you break the white target, the game you're playing is free

Sadly, even though I had enough money for another game, thanks to getting a free game, I ran out of ammo, so after watching the next few games, learning how targets break depending on where they hit, I helped clean up and shut down the range again (this time it was just me and one of the other regulars doing the cleanup, all the other shooters left after they were done), and I went over to wally-world to pick up one of those 100 round value packs of shotshells, I plan on keeping at least one value pack in the trunk of my car at all times, so I won't run out of ammo on my weekly trap games, as I don't normally shoot more than 100 rounds per range trip (yet ;) ), I always want to keep 100 rounds in the trunk, so next weekend, I'll pick up another 100 round pack and use this one up, keeping a 100 round buffer

After my trap games, I went to the rifle range with my Savage Mark II-G .22LR bolt action with Bushnell Trophy 3-9x, set up at 50 yards, and the whole time said to myself "this is *boring*, I'd rather be on the trap range, dusting some more EOF's"...., of course, the E/NE wind (12-18 MPH) wasn't much help, it knocked those tiny 40Gr projectiles all over my target, with the right ammo, I can shoot 3/4" groups, today, 1" to 1.5" at 50Yd were the rule, oh I had a couple one-holers, but nowhere near what I normally consider "good" shooting

And to think, I used to *LOVE* .22LR target shooting (still do, but trap is just MORE fun...)

I also took another step towards self sufficent shotgunnery today, stopped off at KTP, and discovered that they had just taken in a rather dusty, but in otherwise fine mechanical shape, Texan single-stage 20GA reloading press, it looks like a MEC 600Jr, and it appears to take MEC charge bars, it has the Texan 2x shot bushing, and the "A" powder bushing, I had the reloading counter guy go over it with me, the press seems solid, it's all cast steel construction, and the only plastic on the press appears to be the shot and powder dispensers, it's a very solidly made press, I think with the addition of a universal charge bar, it should be a pretty sweet setup, and the price was right as well, $45 for the press

The shot bushing appears to throw a 7/8 oz load, but I have no idea what the powder bushing throws, as I still have to get components, I'll get them next weekend, I was trying to keep costs down today...

Now that I have the ability to "Crimp My Own" as it were, I'm looking forward to being able to experiment with all sorts of powder/shot combinations, heck, I may even work up some of SM's infamous primer-only popcorn loads, perfect for training my nephew and niece, send my TDC 12Ga to H&R and get a Youth 20GA barrel and a full size 28GA barrel fitted to it

Anyone here have a chart, or link to one that lists what the Texan bushings throw for loads/charge loads?

Been there, done that, now have a reloader, a bunch of reloaded shells, wads, shot, powder, and even more empty hulls waiting to be reloaded. :uhoh:

I reload for three different bore sizes - 12, 20 and 28 - my 8' bench is overly crowded with supplies. Buy things in BULK to save money - that means settle on your hull, find a published recipe and buy wads, powder, primers and shot in bulk - powder in 8# jugs, primers in sleeves of 5,000 (multiple sleeves), wads by the 5,000, shot by the hundredweight, if not by the ton.

Then try skeet, then 5-stand, and then you'll be ready for sporting and FITASC.....:D

Come to think of it, I think I can blame oneounceload for my addiction, at least in part! I remember the name when I was looking up stuff on reloading.

THERE! THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!

Well, I should know better, it's just like posting to a motorcycle forum, asking here never gets you any reasons to stop, only reasons to "Go BIG or go HOME!"

Now let me go fondle my shotgun while getting ready for bed.;)

Though we should probably relate something to the OP. Namely, if you don't already have one, get a good manual. I can't remember which ones I have, because they are buried amongst a bunch of things from my recent move, but just do a search, and grab a couple of the more recomended ones. They will have everything in one place that you will want to reference. What else, do it in an area with no distractions, only have the materials you need in front of you so you don't mix up things. If you have such a way to do this, load a couple, then check them in your gun. I did that by taking my stuff to a range. If you live where I want to live, you could light off a couple off your back porch.:D

Talk to some guys who have been at this a while, I got several powder bushings from guys who just had multiple extras laying around. Kind of like if I ever take someone under my wings for mechanical things, I've got duplicate wrenches littering my garage.

Oh, and especially given what we are talking about, there are NO stupid questions. And I really mean that. There are however, some incredibly stupid answers. :uhoh: At least mine are usually more off topic than stupid, I like to think.

P.S.
I'm sorry in advance for what this forum will turn you into. For my own safety, I sure hope any significant other you have doesn't meet me.:p

When I sit down and actually *think* about it, I can come up with a few reasons why I'm getting addicted to clay games and shotgunning in general;

1; I finally have a shotgun (actually, two) that fits me properly, my H&R TDC's, as I have posted before, my mossberg 500's LOP is just a hair too long, which makes shooting uncomfortable, at some point I'll either cut down the stock by 2" or so and fit a grind to fit limbsaver pad, or just trade it towards an 870

2; hitting an EOF gives the shooter an immediate, tactile, visceral and gratifying confirmation of hitting the target, nothing's more gratifying than seeing the EOF disappear in a puff of orange dust, or fragment off into pieces, by comparison, paper punching seems far more analytical/cerebral (which I also like)

3; it appeals to my primitive "caveman" brain, <grunt> MacTech SMASH EOF!

4; even though I'm antisocial normally, the group dynamic of a bunch of trapshooters on the range, cheering each other on, helping those in a slump/newbies, and good-naturedly ribbing their fellow shooters adds a lot of enjoyment to the game, getting cheered for dusting the special white "free game" disc is especially nice

I guess I'm finding that the more social aspect of a trap game adds a lot to the game

If you think TRAP shooters are nice and jovial................we'll need to get you to a sporting clays outing - you better be able to take a good-natured ribbing when you miss that crosser 10 yards away.....(Of course you get to then dish it out to the next guy who misses it as well) :D

Personally, I can count the rounds of trap I have shot on one hand - it has never interested me. Skeet was fun for a while, but then along came 5-stand and sporting.

Try them all - they all have their peculiarities and can be frustrating one minute and gratifying as all get out the next.

i too started with trap. 5 stand is even more fun. especially with friends.

Do try all the games, there's a lot of fun out there and ALL of it helps your performance.

MT sounds like you went to Cherry Creek, if you want a humbling experience try the 5 stand game! Its fast.

Actually, my range is the South Berwick Rod and Gun club (same as SSNVet) in Maine

They have singles and doubles trap, I'm thinking about trying doubles with my Parker VH SxS, even though SxS aren't ideal for trap, and yes, I do want to try all the different types of clay games

I'm thinking about trying doubles with my Parker VH SxS

I'm betting that will be a BLAST (pun intended)....sounds like a LOT of fun.

The other day a retired doc brought out his 1929 Parker (don't know which grade, but it was in mint condition) - he was smacking those 5-stand targets with it - it was choked M/F.

I just bought a nice 20 SxS, now you got me wanting a nice 12 for clays...........

If you want to pull the table on them show up with one of these at the trap range. Your trap buddies will be laughing so hard they won't hit a darn thing. I get bets on how many birds I'll hit, the first time I brought it out they all said zero. I can't seem to get that bet anymore. LOL But no matter what It's still fun. Welcome to cocaine for shooters!:neener:

I'm new to trap shooting as well. I've only shot 175 shells but it is a blast, last week 18, 15, 15 lots of room for improvement. I bought a used Wingmaster and I think i'll be using that for the next few trips to the range instead of the other guns I usually bring.

I used to be into rifles for years then the ranges dried up in the area.
Went and shot Clays in Houston over 2 days blew through more than a case.
Glad to hear your happy and addicted too.
I am too to all the games- Only done 5 stand once.
Then I find a new range started 40 minutes from me.
2 Trap, 2 Skeet and 1000 yd.......but alas no clays-
Hopefully, I will meet the boss and see what he thinks-
It takes lots of machines for a Clay course-
Hopefully find other liked minded people there and perhaps buy the machines for them in exchange for lifetime memberships. Just a thought-
