Warm it up, not hot, and a lot of it will drip or wipe off. Then
I use mineral spirits. Go easy on the stock, I would remove it before the deep clean.

Pull the action out of the stock and clean them separately. You'll find a ton of cosmo under the action that you can't get to with it in the stock.

Mineral spirits work. I've used brake clean in the past on the metal parts with no ill effects.

Kerosene or diesel will take the cosmo off too. When I did mine, I put all the small parts (screws, bolt parts, mag box, etc.) in a tub of kerosene and then used a soft bristle brush and scrubbed the cosmo off of the metal parts to big to fit in the tub. I was going to refinish the stock, so I didn't even bother doing the same with it. I went straight to a chemical finish stripper.

WD40 is also a good cosmoline solvent. The stock can be wiped but it will never stop oozing until it gets heated completely through. Wait until summer, and then set it out on a rock or something secure from the wind and allow that west Texas sun to drive the cosmoline to the surface. A couple of days of solar heating and wiping should dry it up.

Look on youtube. There are many videos on how to remove the Cosmo.

Break the rifle down to individual parts to remove all the cosmo. All of the metal parts can be soaked in very hot water and wipe off the grease.

Thats what I was thinking. Just let mother nature work her magic on the wood. Thanks

I used 3 rolls of paper towels to clean mine. then, once summer hits, throw it in a black plastic trash bag and leave it in the car for a few hours. the heat will bring more cosmoline out.

Thanks. If I do that I won't have to wait for it to warm up. Turning the car into a self cleaning oven while at the range i a great idea.

You know there must be a secret grease fitting somewhere on this rifle. The only place I've seen so much gunk was in a 5 gallon can of grease. I know its here somewhere..

Last one I cleaned I took the stock off and sprayed it down with Gunk foaming engine cleaner and then after it sat a bit I poured very very warm water all over it.
