I have owned the Springfield and Kimber. But think the STI would even be better from the articles and reviews I've read. Unfortunately, i'm not allowed to own one in California.

What is it for?
For an all around reliable nice looking one I'll second the S&W or the DW. If you want a SAO 9mm designed by J.M.B. then buy a nice High Power from FN or Browning.
It's hard to give advice without criteria though any of the aforementioned are nice pistols in their own regards. Perhaps a plan of action would be helpful. Do you plan to:
Take it to the range, shoot factory ammo six times a year and nothing more?
Defend your home with it and no other weapon?
Carry it concealed or open for personal protection?
Does appearance matter? (color/rail/serrations)
Are adjustable sights or night sights or fiber optic sights your cup of noodles?
Have you held any to compare flat/arched/checkered mainspring housings?
Every major 1911 manufacturer has pistols that are purpose built for the task at hand. Unfortunately for you, there are few built around the 9mm. Knowing what your intentions are will however give the seasoned 1911 advisors something to work with.

STI Trojan 6" 9mm. THEEEEE most accurate gun i have ever fired. Not to mention that it has the recoil similar to .22's!... well maybe a LITTLE more than a .22 but not by much.

Bang for the buck I would and have put my money on the STI Trojan 9mm. many current production 1911 chambered in that cartridge. RIA, S&W, Kimber, Dan Wesson, Les Baer, Wilson Combat, Nighthawk Custom, STI, Para Ordnance to name a few. I ordered an STI Trojan from their Custom shop, should be here in mid September (ordered it in April).
What I would look for in a 9mm 1911A1 would be a ramped barrel vs the ramped frame, it is said to improve feeding rounds and it works well with the Wilson Combat 10 round magazines.

King of the Hell Yeah that's nice! You need some driftwood for a background to show that beauty off. Now tell the op what he'll pay for one.
Wish I had bought fewer Trojans (in the 12 pack) in my youth and saved for one of those Trojans instead. Live and learn.

I paid $700 for that Trojan approx 5-6 months ago.
They show up in the used market all the time for 700-800 and go new between 950-1050 from what ive seen.
For the quality you get, the customer service that is available and the fact that its an American gun made in Texas!.... Incredibly hard to beat IMO.
Its overall quality/performance is extreemly high and out of all my 1911's in the 1,000 range which include 3 dan wessons (Herritage, cbob, PM-7), Springfield Trophy match, Kimber Raptor, Kimber SIS, Kimber CDP II Pro.... thats all i can think of... anyhow... Id rather have my STI Trojan over any of those hands down.
