What .32 for the not so big 32 bday?

Hmmm. I wasn't thinking you had performance in mind, which to me spells self defense in little guns.
I didn't, but (and this is why I focused on I frames) is if I was going to buy a larger frame than that, I would rather it be in a .32 Mag. Not that that is hugely more powerful than .32 Long, but I have a LOT more brass in .32 Mag currently.

I guess how much brass I have should have been a factor, I have 100 cases of .32 S&W, about 250 of S&W Long. Now, I'm not going to be blasting the .32 S&W short top breaks much, so that's fine, but if I got a S&W Long chamber in a S&W or Colt, yes, I'd put quite a few thru them.

Ammo availability not an issue, I'm a smart boy, I reload!

If you want something really different, there's always the antique .32 rim fire revolvers (Forehand & Wadsworth) though ammo is probably impossible to get other than collectable old stock.
How about a Marlin 1875 Standard in 32 Rim Fire? I also have ammo.

I'm definitely way more interested in a S&W I frame or Colt Police Positive in .32 than I was when I made this thread, so what are the prices for one in shooting condition? This isn't for a collection...

A T/C in 454 would be awesome, especially if you handload.

Get some 454 cases and load anywhere from soft target loads to full power Big game hunting rounds. (4x the energy of 44 Mag!)

The ability to change barrels or fit a shoulder stock just gives you so many more options, too.

The issue I have with S&W made .32 S&W Long revolvers is, unless they're an I frame, they're not all that special. I could go with a .32 or .327 Mag and get more performance in a snub, so any J frame .32's made by S&W would be silly.
If this was about performance, you wouldn’t be looking at 32 caliber revolvers, right? ;)

I wasn't seriously considering it before, but now that I think of it, I would be into buying an I frame or a Colt Police Positive. Something that is smaller than the typical small frame size we see today.
I think the Smith and Wesson I-frames are affordable. Decent Colt is less so.

Luger is too much for me right now and I have zero interest in .30 Luger or .30 Mauser. When people talk about how .40 is dead, there aren't many calibers that are dead, but .30 Luger/Mauser absolutely are.
Yep, and being necked, they’re not even nice to hand load for. Maybe that’s why it’s dead? Like 357 Sig.

Taurus is on the short list. I'll have to weigh whether I would rather go with a Taurus/Rossi .32 Long or .32 Mag over a .32 Long S&W or Colt revolver. It's like, there will always be a collectors market for Colt and Smiths, but IDK how much higher the .32's will go. With the Taurus/Rossi .32 revolvers, those are not all that common and from all I hear are good.
Rossi and Taurus’ are lower quality and the triggers can vary quite a lot, from what I hear. You would have to see it in person to make sure you’re getting a good one.

I have the Beretta 81BB and not only was it cheaper, I feel it's also a better pistol than any .32 Walther.
Based on what? I’ve read that they can have heavier triggers, but they are every bit as elegant as a Beretta, IMO. By the way, did they ever make the Beretta 81 in 32 ACP?

If Starline would do everyone a solid and make .32 rimfire brass and .38 RF too I would likely buy an antique Remington New Model Police conversion. Since nobody makes the brass, no way would i bother with rimfire larger than .22.

BTW TTv2: great thread but please allow me one moment of drift. The Shatner pic is great but not seeing R.P. is throwing me off
Ha, no problem. This thread can drift all it wants now that I've got more .32's to keep an eye out for.

Does the Beretta 81 have a single-stack equivalent? I saw the single-stack 380 (model 85?) in the wild not too long ago.

Since I have both the Beretta 81 and a nice PP clone in 32acp, I would say...

They're not better or worse than each other. They're just different. The sights and triggers are comparable, IIRC.

The 81 feels much bigger and fatter. That's not a bad thing. I do better with big, fat pistols. It feels more like shooting a duty pistol.

The PP is more slender and has a nice balance. It points nicely. It feels more like a big pocket pistol.

Mine are both surplus and both were belt pistols for LEO's, but due to their respective sizes and shapes, the Beretta feels more like a duty pistol and the PP is more like something you could CC without too much trouble.

I like them both. The 81 has gotten a workout lately. I really need to bring the PP next time. :)

Heyy we have the same guns! Yes the 81 does have a single stack equivalent (I believe it's the 82 but could be wrong). 81 is definitely chunky, I'll carry it in the winter when thicker clothes are permitted. The FEG conceals better for warm months, and is light enough I can attach it to shorts no problem.

SlimReaper67 must be a surplus enthusiast, too. :)

Milsurp, police turn-ins, and damaged finishes are the reasons I could afford most of my favorites.

If you want something different, the Mauser 1914 is fun.
