What a Conundrum

The answer is obviously both. With your max $2000 budget you could actually pick up a Colt 1911 and a Colt 6920, giving you two classic weapons that will be good range toys that could also be handed down when the time comes.

Personally I'd be looking at a Sig P210 Legend Target. It isn't a 1911 but it certainly is an heirloom quality firearm. It's maybe the best service handgun ever made. Not only is it 1911 accurate but it's combat weapon durable. It's also a 9mm. But it is one incredible pistol. They guarantee they are capable of shooting a 2" group at 50 yards. You can read more about them here:

If I had 2 grand to spend that's where it would go especially if I already had a nice 1911. You can get an AR later for a lot less money.

:) AR is on the agenda, however may be a couple extra weeks since kid #3 decided to make his appearance! I promise I'll update when I get it though!

AR-15=LMT 1911-Les Baer

Those are good choices. However there are many more good choices.

Good budget AR choices are: S&W, CMMG, Windham weapontry.

Better choice is a colt 6920. Walmart has the magpul edition ones for $1080. If GM will price match that, I'd to it over anything else unless you want to spend a little more. See below.

For the money and quality you can get these top tier rifles: BCM, Daniel Defense, LMT standard patrol, etc..

For more money you can get: Larue, Noveske, LMT piston, etc.

Checking the online website, it looks like you can get the colt 6920... That's where I'd put my money. If for some reason you ever sell it, you'll get as much as you paid for it.

1911: Colt, Springfield armory, dan wesson, les baer are all known to be great 1911s.

STI is a good choice too, but they don't have the history of the above.

There are a few others, but the best choice for the money would be a Colt 70 or 80 series, or a Springfield operator IMHO.

This CeeZee is a brilliant choice. Of course it's neither of the OP's stated options and it's price likely exceeds his plan, but if there was ever a handgun that merits the, 'I'll hold it for a lifetime and hand it down to my child who will do the same", that Sig is it.
I've lusted for it for years and I own a gun or two that has sufficiently appreciated in value that it would likely be a lateral trade, but still can't bring myself to search no less own one.
OP, please reconsider the AR choice. The only reason to buy an AR over a pistol like this is if you were to be convinced that the AR will be removed from purchase by some yet unstated legislation. Other than that, you can always buy an AR.
But if the new family member on the way makes it 'none of the above' you still made out ahead. Congratulations.

And it's on its way!

This is just an image from DD, have not received the rifle yet, but should be here any day now. Also I believe the version I got doesn't have the upgraded pistol grip & stock.
