Just a thought, but could you build or have built a .50 BMG barrel for the large frame H&R single shot rifle. I know that they are offered in most common high powered rifle chamberings as well as 45-70 and .500 S&W.
So what if you chambered one in .50 BMG and put one of the ultra-effective muzzel brakes on it?

This is this! It's not something else, it's this.

im not familiar with any barrels like this.

theres a big step between even .500 SW and .50BMG.

dont forget the .50 in 50bmg is the bullet size, not the case size. i suspect a strong chamber for .50 BMG may be larger than the H&R frame.

Ain't no way I'd pull the trigger on that beastie! The recoil, muzzle blast, and noise would physically injure you. Assuming that the gun didn't suffer from catastrophic disassembly.

One major problem, assuming that this is even a practical consideration, is that Handi-Rifles don't weight very much. Shooting their .45-70 can be rather painful with fairly stout loads, and that cartridge doesn't even begin to compare in recoil energy with a lightweight .50 BMG!

Have you seen the video that's been circulating for a couple of years of the guy firing the .600 Nitro Express Contender? This would be similar, IMHO.

How about if they made one with a 10" barrel and a permanently attached 6" brake? They could either call it the, "betcha can't shoot it", or maybe the "line clearer".

I doubt that the action is strong enough. Even though the .45-70 is a bigbore cartridge, it is still relatively low-pressure.

Before you pull the trigger ?????????

Before you pull the trigger :fire: ????????? Ask yourself two questions ?????

Is my insurance paid up, :confused:Have I seen all I want to see in life :what:????

I seriously doubt the design of a Handi-Rifle is capable of handling the forces generated by the 50 BMG. And even if it were, pulling the trigger would make one see stars where there weren't any moments before.

I remember seeing an article in Shotgun News once about a single-shot .50bmg sniper rifle made in Serbia or Croatia(?). I think it was called a Manda, but I can't find anything about it. Anyway, it was basically an M2 barrel mated up to an action and stock, looked like a real beast.

Rondog: Are you thinking of the RPA Rangemaster?

BTW: There is no way I'd pull the trigger on what you propose.

Rondog,
Is this the rifle you're thinking about?

Nah, pretty sure that's not it, or the RAP Rangemaster either. I'm looking....can't seem to have much luck searching Shotgun News for old articles. As I recall, it was a fairly crude rifle, bolt action, with a receiver made for an M2 barrel to screw into. Big ol' long honkin' thing, don't think it had a muzzle brake either, but it might have. Crude but deadly.

i actually like HEAVY recoil at times (when i am depressed). but there is NO WAY i would shoot that! it would be an instant hospital visit! and maybe even an extended stay.

I'm a big boy and even though I have owned several large calibers including 500 Nitro, 375 Ultra mag, and a 50 BMG. I have a cut down H&R in 12gauge slug and that stings wouldn't want to be the guy behind that 50 H&R even being as big as I am.

There was a .50 BMG pistol that was offered in a kit without serial numbers called the Maddi-Griffin. The BATF did not like the whole no serial number thing along with other things he was doing and I'm sure most know the story. There are definitely some out there though not that I would want to shoot one.

I'd rather put this to my shoulder and shoot it. The end result would be the same from the shooters point of view.

Seriously Belted magnums are too much for a handi frame

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. 14,000 lbs of muzzle energy in a 6lb handi rifle? Would make a great Youtube, no doubt up their in hits with playing with polar bears, adventures in stopping the wood chipper by jumping in it, flying an airplane into a glass factory, lion slapping, Gorilla taunting, blind mine disposal, let me think.....

There's a reason the Handi Rifle doesn't come in Magnum chamberings. It's a beefed up single shot shotgun frame. No way it would survive a big 50.
