I've been looking into getting an evil black rifle. An AR-15.
I thought I'd get a Bushmaster or S&W but someone on a AR forum highly recommended the CMMG.
What do you think? It's about $200 more than the two mentioned but has a lifetime warranty. And a lot of choices of build. I take it they build to your order.

CMMG makes a great product but I don't think it's worth $200 more. Any of those 3 companies mentioned make nice rifles, personally I would go with S&W.

I'll be honest...

I've only had 2 ar15s. the first one was a kit gun that i put together myself, and later sold. I had never had one before, so I didn't know what to expect. it turned out to be accurate, reliable, and a boat-load of fun. about a year after I sold it, I decided to get a new one, and ended up with a CMMG. after my first range trip, I vowed never to sell the CMMG. it was more accurate (although I could've just gotten better by then), seemed more durable, just as reliable, and the finish and action were perfectly smooth, almost like butter! looking back on my parts gun, I remember everything being rougher, and just not as smooth.

The point it, even the cheapest ar15s will work (and usually work well), but if you want a rifle that isn't ridiculously expensive but still gives you that 'mercedes' feel, go CMMG.

How hard have you used the cheaper AR15s? There IS a differnence between low and and high end besides cosmetics and fit-n-finish. It can be demonstrated during a carbine or rifle class, if you push the weapon hard enough.

That's not a slam on "cheap" guns. If you bought something for casual shooting (and lets face it, that describes the use of 90% of my guns), it's perfectly up to that task, and anything more would be wasted money that could be spent on something else.

I have a number of CMMG uppers. They are solid, and have features that I find compelling (from properly-staked gas keys to 1:7" twist in chrome-lined barrels to parkerizing under the FSB). I think that they are well worth the price difference over a bargain-bin unit.
