What, are iron sights diseased or something?

CZ makes some fine, fine guns with open sights that will give most any other guns in their price range a hefty run for their money.

Here's my CZ-550 FS in 30-06. I, too, necessitate that my rifles have open sights. Click for a bigger picture.

Nice! I have the FS in .243 and a .308. Big fan of the 550 -- it's a hoss!

There's no doubt that hunting deer is best done with a scope. That's how I see it anyway. But squirrels are another matter. There's a place in the world for iron sights.

Cee Zee I wasn't slamming irons. Iron sights was how I learned to shoot & I still like to plink with an old Marlin model 60 with irons. I was just thinking about the OP's situation. That & you can't really blame manufacturers of deer rifles for omitting a feature most end users wont use anyway.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. I was just adding some more information. People said they could shoot better with a scope than anyone could shoot the same rifle with irons. IMO they have never tried to shoot a running squirrel or a rabbit or a small bird flying through the air or worse yet a bat flying through the air with a scope. Not even a 1X scope can make these things easier. I was just pointing out that iron sights can be used effectively in certain situations where scopes come up short. I've tried doing those things with small powered, fixed scopes which generally have a large field of view. It just isn't as easy IMO as using irons are. Believe it or not I've seen situations where deer were too close to shoot with a scope. I had 2 young bucks walk up on me so close I could almost feel their warm breath. You can't focus a scope on a deer that close. I was too scared to move by that time anyway because I was leaning against a tree, sitting down waiting for a squirrel to show itself. I thought it was funny how close they were coming until I realized I would get a mouth full of hoof if I spooked them not to mention a go around with those pointy things on their heads. I only had a .22 so I wasn't going to shoot one. I just was watching the show until it got too real. Then I wanted out but was stuck until they moved on. No way I would have wanted to use a scope on either of those deer though even if I was deer hunting.

The only optics I have had luck with on fast moving animals are lasers. Red dot scopes work fairly well but not as well as irons. Lasers work amazingly well though. You can shoot from the hip or any other position if you jump a rabbit.

I could have nailed 3 deer not more than 75 yards from my back door today. I would have wanted a scope for that job. Most deer hunting is best done with a scope. I was agreeing with you on that.

umm, i actually dont use scopes.. at all, not even on my bolt actions.. i mean, i had one on my mosin nagant for a while but hated it.. i feel more confident with iron sights and i dont really have to worry about anything happening to them that i couldnt fix on the spot.. the worst that could happen is the front sight post were to somehow get canted, but its hooded so even thats incredibly unlikely.. i guess im just REALLY utilitarian

One of the reasons I'd imagine most bolt guns don't come with iron sights is that if you do mount a scope you need to use high rings. This runs afoul of mounting a scope as low as possible.

That said, you can order a rifle from Weatherby with iron sights installed. IIRC from their website, it's about $240 extra.

I like the bullfrog comment CraigC....lol

Too each his own then. For most hunting applications, I would agree with you, although I hunt with mine, and it kills anything any other 7 lbs bolt gun chambered in 308 will. I have 2 ways to precisely aim the rifle, where the "average" bolt action rifle today has one.

For his "other" need, a well built semiautomatic rifle is worth the extra 1.5lbs, and is why the OP should consider it over a bolt action IMO. ( No mention of walking around till he wears out his boots either)

Unlike Cooper's idea that one simply sneaks around the woods un-noticed....and fires the rifle very little, the OP mentioned defense of others as a possibility........ and the reason why it is a much better choice over a bolt gun for this application. ( This was proven back in the 1930's)

Ya know, if I were a rich man I would be sorely tempted to
get that hog hunter and add this bad boy to it...

A nice accurate 308 fed by 10 round detachable magazines would
be pretty darn nifty, in anyones' book.
'course those magazines cost $70 bucks a pop!
Like I said, if I were a rich man...
Don't you just love American made stuff? 205 for 10 ounces of aluminum. While you are at it you can add an JP enterprises stock for 1100 lol. Like you said : If I were a rich man lol

Try shooting a round of 3-gun with the GSR.
Yes, I'm sure that an advantage in a completely unrealistic gun game designed for high capacity semi-autos is a valid indictment against a 10-shot bolt gun. Unless something has changed and civilians are getting into running gunfights with 20 assailants.

You could get a LaRue OBR for much less than $4k and have a gun that is vastly more versatile and capable than any ruger bolt gun.
If you shoot in competition or have a need for a law enforcement duty rifle, I'm sure that $3000 9.5lb OBR would be a better choice. However, the rest of humanity will probably be better served with a $750 bolt gun. I know that the OBR will not do anything more than I would need out of a GSR. Except cost four times as much and weigh 2lbs more. I swear, the AR true believers are almost as bad as the Glock guys.

And all this in a thread asking about BOLT ACTIONS.

CraigC and fragout, please take your side conversation to private messages
or start your own thread.

Go back and re-read Archangel14s' post when he started this thread.
Your posts are pretty dang far off topic.

I hope I didn't come across as an arse, just saying you guys are in your own little
debate that left the OPs' question behind a while ago.

All the same, cheers.
It's five O clock some where...

OK, I think this has been sufficiently derailed by opinions of whether or not a scope or iron sights are better, and for what purpose.

None of which were on topic for the question posed and help requested.
