What gun must every discriminating gun collector have to have? In your opinion, of course :D ...

I'd say a K-98 Mauser of some vintage is required. They're classic and widely available for a good price.

SKS

Ruger MKII

Mosin Nagant

a 1911 of some sort

Remington 870 or Mossberg 500

American Eagle Mauser,in .308(old Federal Arms import),Shanei Arsenal BOX CANNON Broomhandle Mauser in .45acp,L41(or is it L42??)No 4 Lee EnfieldMkII in 7.62 NATO(Pre Parker Hale M85 Sniper Rifle for the Brits),...need I go on???

Handguns:

Mk II
.357 or .44mag 3"-6" Ruger, Smith, or Colt
1911
wondernine - Glock, Sig, HK, CZ

Longarms:

SKS
AR/AK
FAL/M1A
Some sort of bolt gun (my preference is FP10 or 700VS/PSS)
Mossy 500/Rem 870
10/22 or Marlin 60

So far I've got 3/4 handguns and 4/6 longarms covered...guess I need to pick up another job!

You must have BP pistols of flint, percussion and revolving cylinders. Colt, Remington and LeMat clones are great. You need several 22s, 32s and 38s from IJ, H&R, S&W and Colt. You need a few 44s from the big four, S&W, Colt, Remington and Merwin Hulbert. There are pre-war, post-war and modern revolvers from the new big four, Ruger, S&W, Colt and Taurus. There are many types of rifles. I would have to have pump, lever, bolt and semi-auto along with single shot rifles. The same with shotguns. There are many things to look for. You could specialise in just S&W pocket pistols and have fun. I lean towards 19th and early 20th century pre-war firearms myself. Webleys and Enfields are fun to hunt down.

It really depends on what you do, where you live, etc. Are you a person that hunts, one that shoots at indoor ranges only, one that has accessibility to land to shoot on, etc? What are your preferences in firearm types? Military, civilian, sporting, ect?

With that said, I would list the following:

Handguns:

~Browning High Power
~Quality SA .45 cal. 1911
~Compact Service Pistol in .9mm, .40 S&W or .357 Sig (Spriger XD, Glock, HK)
~Small Frame Revolver in .357 Mag with 2 1/2 - 3" bbl
~MKII or Buck Mark .22

Rifles:

~Carbine in .30 cal. Or, a PC9 or PC40 from Ruger
~Scoped Bolt Action in .308 or .30-06
~Lever Gun in .44 Mag
~M1A

Shotguns:

~Coach Gun
~20 Ga. 22" - 24" Semi Auto bird gun
~Mossy 12 Ga. HD gun Or, HK Tactical Self Loader (my favorite)
~12 Ga Semi Auto 3" - 3 1/2" w/26" bbl and Invector chokes

OH, everybody needs a Pellet Gun!

~Benjamin/Sheridan 5mm pump :D

Functional (parenthesis--guns I now have or intend to buy in next several months):

1. High-powered rifle, .308 or more, with quality scope (Tikka T3)
2. Carbine rifle (Model 99, .300 Savage, Ruger PC9)
3. Revolver of at least .357 caliber or more (Ruger Blackhawk)
4. Compact autoloader pistol, at least 9mm or more (Ruger P95)
5. 12-gauge shotgun (Mossberg 500)

Would like:

Browning Certori in as many configurations as you can afford

a good .22 long rifle,a good shotgun and perhaps a good long range gun and a automatic or revolver of some sort.

Depends on your interests as a collector. If you're talking about a battery (as in, a group of guns you actively shoot), then it depends on your shooting sports. If you're talking about outfitting your uber-tactical commando wannabe, then that opens another can of worms.

For me, I am an accumulator. Just about zero of my guns have any real collector's interest. I jus' lak 'em. That being said, I'd say a man is equipped to deal with the world if he has:

Handguns: a pocket handgun, a field revolver, a defensive autopistol, and a .22 for plinking

Shotguns: A 12ga pump with short rifle-sighted bbl and a long interchangable choke bbl.

Rifles: A .22 pot-filler, a .30 caliber deerslayer, and some sort of EBR.

This completely ignores any collector's interest or shooting sports. An IDPA enthusiast's collection will look a whole lot different from a Sporting Clay's afficianado's. Some folks collect Smith's. Some collect Colt's (BTW, the Smith'ers are right:D )

Like Yogi said: "You can sum it up in one word; You never know."

Multiple copies of all of them :what: .

Several .22s pistol & rifle - both for plinking & for teaching new people.

Pistols:

a mousegun

9mm - full sized for the next step up when teaching new people & a compact for slipping into your pocket for quick errands.

.45 - full sized or compact depending on your body style/ease of carry for when those quick errands turn into something of a longer duration.

.357 revolver (preferably 4") - downloadable to .38 special for the above mentioned new people. Uploadable to handle most anything in North America (except of course mutant ninja grizzlies).

Rifles:

Mosin Nagant 91/30 (or variation) - lots of history, simple, cheap to feed. (alternative would be a 8mm Mauser variation)

SKS - simple semi auto, cheap to feed. Good step up from .22 for new people.

AR/AK - good reliable short/intermediate range battle rifle. Pisses off any antis in the general vicinity. Also good for converting antis/beginners to the dark side.

Garand/M1A/CETME/FAL/etc - any combat tested MBR. Something for you to use while equiping neighbors/family with the SKS/AR/AK in TEOTWAWKI.

Good bolt gun in .308/30.06 - one of those soon to be banned eeeeevil sniper rifles  .

Shotguns:

Remington 870/Mossberg 500 - Simple all around shotgun. If you know how to use one it really pisses off the trap/skeet snobs when you break more birds than them  .

(Marshall, you really need to read UC ;) ).

When I hit it big...

Sheesh, where to start?

.22 pistol and rifle (I like Ruger's, but there are lots of good ones)
Mauser (Swede, German, and/or Persian)
Mosin (Russian, Finn)
Enfield (No. 1 AND No. 4)
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine
SKS
AK
AR
M1A/FAL
870
Fullsize .45 (1911/Sig 220)
Fullsize 9mm (BHP/Sig 226)
Compact 9mm (Glock 19/Sig 228)
.308 bolt (Remchester, Savage, etc.)
.223 bolt (Ditto--Gotta have at least one Leupold, one Grand Slam)

.....and ammo.

It's generally a good idea to start the collection with first some money in your pocket.
