What are preferred guns of farmers in unstable area?

Growing up in Kansas my truck gun was an old, old, old (did I fail to mention old) Winchester 30-30. It was not a pretty thing but it shot true.

They use whatever rifle they can buy from a friend or at auction. Or whatever they inherited. Usually a bolt or lever gun.

And they all know the sheriff, which is the most important.

I wouldn't call IA unstable by any means but most farmers up hare tote some sort of bolt .243, .270, 30-06, type rifle in the truck. More for yotes than anything else. Up north (well in from the IA-MN border) there's been a spike in black bear sightings and I suppose it would work for that too.

A lady coworker lives not far from New Albany, in n.e. MS.

About two years ago she heard a few shots fired from a wooded area, which begins about 200 yards from her rural house.
She told me that there were numerous visible No Trespassing signs on the edge of her property, where there are no swamps, rivers which can rise and cover signs (this happens to such signs).

As the young shooters, who must have seen a deer, trotted on horseback into the open area (her deep back yard), "J" met them with a fully-loaded M-1 Carbine and told them to never again trespass on her land.

I would take an AR, with a scope or eotech and magnifier.I saw a pretty inexpensive night vision model on buds the other day for around 4-500 dollars. That might be the way to go with thse distances you guys are dealing with, and the heavier ammo in a 1x7 twist barrell.

Here in s.w. Idaho, although not "unstable," there is a large expanse of vast, open, rough, lonely country, especially in the Owyhee Mountains area. Also, some large remote ranches in same. I know several buckaroos who work on ranches and they are usually not too far from a lever .30-30, or sometimes a 'scoped bolt rifle in one of the .243 up to .30-06 class for coyotes or mountain lions.

There are a few AR15s in trucks or on ATVs, too. Handguns of many persuasions are not at all unusual . ;)

Im in central Texas and make do with regular lever guns, if I was closer to the border that would chanfe quick. Although the way things are going, I may look into ar's ive been fighting the urge for years.

I'm about as SW as one can get and I don't have a clue as to the most popular carry for ranchers/farmers. ARs are popular as is the 22-250 in our wide open country side.

Having grown up in Montana and Alaska, been to Iraq and Afghanistan, hunted in Zimbabwe and Zambia, lived in Vegas, Tucson and Albuquerque. If I had to have 1 gun to carry about my property it would be a Springfield M1A. Reliable, has the reach/punch you need and has a higher ammo capacity and reload time than a bolt action gun. I used one deer and antelope hunting in Eastern Montana and I instantly became very fond of it for that purpose.

With L.E.disappearing from the picture here in So_OR. things have gotten alot worse. I was told this week that they willnot answer tresspassing calls! Citizens /Farmers are buying hi-cap firearms! AR15s, AKs, mod.SKs ect. Magazine.s &ammo. Bullet proof vests & nite-vision Scopes are all selling well. The drug wars are in high gear here! The front page of a local paper keeps showing them as they were released &running story's about how we are in trouble! Guns &ammunition just keep going up in price!
