What are some fun targets to use for target practice?

in the spring for 3-4 weeks we shoot dandilions.only the heads or only the stem, but ya gotta call it first.

Man I love killing feral cats too. Best thing to kill in my book except for that pigman in those feed the pig bank saving commercials, god I want a shot at him. By the by for all you feral cat lovers, these are not cute cats that poke around your porch. They are trash eating, porch pissing, pet mauling abominations. Not barn cats, or stray cats, those are not what I'm talking about. I'm talking abominations.

bowling pins, milk jugs filled with water, cheap soda, tin cans. Ive found that 'reactive' targets are the most fun, like a pop can hanging from a tree by some string.

For BB or pellet guns, try hanging a used soda can from the pop top to a branch.

Makes a satisfying "ping" and dances when hit, and a little wind blowing it around makes it a challenge.

Still recyclable when you're done.

dependin on how your range/shooting area is set up u can take an old tire with a piece of plywood in the center...roll it down a hill in front of the backstop..makes a challenging target

Not much of a challenge but,,,, a few years ago a buddy and I cleaned up a very large yard for some extra cash. There was a heaping pick up load full of dry leaves in 55 gallon bags when we were done. We decided to burn all the leaves up at his ranch. Legal in Oregon. When we got there we decided it would be fun to do some shooting. I had my Ithaca 37 and a box of dove shot and man that was fun. Bags full of dry leaves absolutely explode when peppered with a shotgun. The bag shreds, leaves fly, it's a good time. I want to try the same thing with packing peanuts in trash bags. Lets hear it for cheap thrills.

bricks with a centerfire explode nicely.. personally i like buying a few cases of the cheapest diet soda possible and shooting the whole thing at once.. pop can pandemonium!! winter is amazing.. take all your old milk jugs and fill them up with water and just set them outside to freeze.. .30-06 turns ice into snow real fast.. and Dambugg.. trash bags full of leaves with a shotgun?? genius!!!!

Expired canned goods. Hit a can of bean soup w/.357 Puma and took a bean in the chest at 25 yards.

Clay birds--reduce to powder from centerfire rifle hits. Shot with pistol or 22rf until all pieces are destroyed. MTM makes hangers that plug into their target stand and corrugated plastic backer.

Poly 5-gal pail lids. Can flip these from one end of the backstop to the next until they roll out of the target zone. From 100 or 200 yards with an EBR. These can take a lot of hits before falling apart. If your favorite restaurant or bakery gets their ingredients in 5-gal pails, then you may have a source of targets.

CD/DVDs. The free internet ones make nice fodder for 22rf and pistols.

Hangtuff Targets by Newbold. I clamp them into the target holder at the club indoor range. These can take thousands of hits. React dramatically when hit. No riccochet--the bullets pass through.

Lawnchairs. Once the strapping rots off, you have a frame to hang targets on. Political signage wire frames also work for this purpose.

Lemonade Cans. There's no deposit on non-carbonated beverage cans here yet. So I puncture these--long distance--before retiring them to the recycle bin.

Clanger Targets. Has one meant to take hits from 44 mag (cast bullet). Mine swings on a heavy duty frame. Had a couple sitting "Alley Cat" silhoutte targets made from 3/16" scrap plate steel for 22rf and 38spl.

little plastic drug store army men...buy online bulk....

for .22 I use a large ball of clay....

sams cola cans

paper plates....

clay pigons

cardboard targets held up by a balloon...when you get a center area hit target falls over....

Balloons are good. My young daughter started out popping balloons with a Ruger Bearcat.

Take soda cans fill em with water and freeze them, then when they are frozen take a box cutter and cut the can off. (WEAR GLOVES) 22 to 12ga works realy well! Also freeze water in other things like pie pans, cups...:D

I envy those of you that can shot at all that fun stuff. Our range only permits paper targets. If you use a real-estate sign to paste or tape the targets onto, the sign backing can't be a hard plastic either.

For .22 pistols, you can buy some fairly inexpensive reactive targets that are a blast and last for quite awhile. For occasional touch ups, a can of international orange paint and one of flat black are all you need.

For my SKS, we used to go out and find where the Bubbas all go to recycle their fridges and dishwashers. A 20 year old Bubba class refrigerator can be a lot of fun at 100 meters with 7.62 shorts. Afterwards, we haul them to the county garbage/recycle center. They know me and know my son and I clean up a lot of Bubba drops, so they let me dump for free sometimes.

For IPSC/USPSA practice, I buy the IPSC classic targets, make my own target stands out of 2" PVC and use furring strips for uprights. When I can I also get out to the club to shoot the reactive steel in the action bays.

For shotgun, CLAYS! Hand thrown, Trap single, doubles, and sporting clays - Yay!

as a background we would use a cardboard box and just put targets on it like paper plates, balloons, soda cans and what ever. afterwards we just throw it in the box as trash. i like spinner targets for .22 cause you don't have to clean up any mess and they can take several dozen hits.

A great source for targets is your local thrift shops and dollar stores. Stuffed animals, tennis and golf balls, cheap ceramic figurines are all fun. Also, hit the big box store for bulk store brand soda. Shake the sodas before shooting them and its amazing what will happen!
Bring a couple tarps, spread them out, and put your targets on the tarps. Makes cleanup so much easier.

Paint cans. old, new, whatever. paint cans are awesome to shoot, just make sure you make the first shot from quite a distance. i would imagine that stuff like that like whipped cream cans, easy cheese, and silly string would work good too.

also, you fill up two liter soda bottles with water after you are done with them, or you get some cheap nasty soda cans and bottles, shake them up, and shoot them. so much fun!

also, a real challenge is to get some .410 or 20 guage empty shotshells and some paintballs. set up a row of them at like fifty yards with the paintball on top the open end of the shotshell standing up. then TRY to hit them with a .22. even with a super accurate savage mark 2 .22 with a good 4x scope and accutrigger, this is HARD.

Well, this is probably not the safest thing out there, but in the winter with lots of snow on the ground out at my buddies ranch we would take plastic cups fill them with gas, place them on a table next to lit candles, go back about 50 yards with a .22 and have nice little fireballs!
And one of the stupidist things I once did was shoot one of those little bitty 12 gram CO2 cartridges with a .22 ducked down behind the ATV so I wouldn't get hit by shrapnel, but it did make a really nice boom!

Tannerite and squirrels. Not at the same time though, then it would be hard to find the pieces to cook
