~favorite target?

For those of us blessed enough to be able to go outside on private land and shoot whatever we like at whatever we like.....

What's your favorite target to shoot at??

ok please no one say your neighbors cat ok? not trying to start a war

I like to shoot at metal things, out west anyway. Like buying some cheap bake pans at walmart, propane tanks, satalite dishs, car doors, etc... I like the way my bullets make big holes in metal, sometimes tearing it open(once tore a 6 inch opening in a dish). Shooting paper or cardboard you can barely notice the hole, cause it closes back in on itself. Also long distance shots with the snubby, propane tanks are good for that. Say at like 100 yards, you cant see far enough to tell you hit it. But you can hear it. When you pull the trigger you get the bang, and if you hit the tank a second or two after the bang you can hear a,"ting". Clay pigeons are good too. Basically I want something that reacts when I hit it. Paper is just boring.

Used to be able to find spots where people dumped garbage. Surprisingly much of it was unused products. Cans of beans, salad dressing, aerosol, TVs, and every once in a while the holy grail of target shooting: the abandoned car. So I guess to answer the question, my favorite target is something that blows apart when I shoot it!

Pink or white foam insulation cut into 4 x 6 inch cubes at either 70 to 100 yards offhand with a .22 or .30 cal. carbine or .45 1911 auto. None from a rest.

Don't get caught shooting caned garbage, or glass at our range, you'll not only be escorted off the premiss but your menbership will be terminated at once. And thats not for a few years but for life.

I originally shot a propane tank with the .223 to see if it would penetrate. yup! the 9mm won't but makes some impressive craters/dents.

A paint can with a .223 is really awesome. Small hole entering and a huge hole on exit! (with paint flying everywhere of course :) )

Hmm everything I shot went thru the propane tank. .22lr, .38 reg and +p, and .45. all went through. Although when I shot at an smaller Oxygen tank, no penetration, just dents. Wgaynor, I wonder if we where shooting at the same kindof propane tanks?

Steel gongs, depending on which gun I am shooting it varies from 1/2" thick 8" dia. steel to tie plates that I kyped from the RR tracks. String em out at 200-600 yds depending on what distance I want to shoot and which gun I am shooting. That and the dogs that supposedly belong to the hippies that live up the next draw over.

Paper plates, cheap on sale generic cookies, paper targets.

Do NOT shoot at propane tanks or other steel items at ranges closer than 50 meters. Ricochets from them can result in injuries.

Any full closed container. Tanks and such as stated above. In the fall the company uses a large qty of gallon size antifreeze jugs. I string them through the handle and can carry about 25 in each hand easily. A little spray paint the day before you go shooting, fill with water on site and free exploding targets. Someone had some florescent green or red marker die used on boats that had expired and I put some in the jugs also one time. This showed up well when hit at 400 yd with the 300 WIN mag.:D

Best I ever shot was a full gallon can of old latex paint with a 308 soft point in the farm driveway. Once was enough though. I don't shoot LP bottles cause I like to make things with them.

Exactly!

I like to go into the desert and set up auto tags on a hillside, pace off 200 yards and let 'em have it with my bull-barrelled Ruger .22 pistol.

Nothing beats "Bang......tink" for serious fun!

ok, I was meaning private property like you or your buddy own it so its anything goes, not a private range but yeah I guess that would tick people off at a range.

ok, gotta ask, what you make with them? got pics??

the bowling pin thing looks cool!!!!! I may have to hunt down some bowling pins when my two little ones get older.

I used to build pyramids out of pop cans when I was younger, start at top and work your way down. This was great fun for me shooting a single shot iver johnson .22 rifle till my dad came outside with something a little more advanced and mowed them all down at once........

I like putting down a tarp and setting up glass bottles now days ;)
the tarp makes clean up a breeze

I don't know if there are different types? The one I had was found on the farm and covered in rust. Distance was 50 yards. FMJ on the 9mm. the .22LR was 36 grain hp.

Either way, doesn't matter. It was fun.

Paper targets, ballons... balloons frozen with food coloring... and my all time favorite... gourds on Thanksgiving day with family at the pit.
