Part 2 of 2

You would think they would ask themselves.......why is a partial vehicle in the road?...I did. Being the high cost of commodities today, I'm sure a scrap iron yard would have paid money to the rightfull owner of that vehicle. That said I have to suspect that pile of metal was the leftovers of a stolen and stripped vehicle. I used to have a lot of respect for the police. I regret to say I have lost a lot of it over the past couple of decades here. In addition to less than enthusiastic service, I've been disappointed with the attitude many of them display toward the law abiding citizens. It is hard to accept a condescending attitude coming from someone half my age who is also less educated. Someone should remind them that they are "public servants" not "public overlords". In all fairness to them, I do believe that in the event of a serious life threatening real time crime in progress call, they would arrive rapidly. It is just that they no longer give a rodent's posterior for crimes against our property. I guess some of you probably consider me a cop basher. Maybe I am. I prefer to think of myself as a citizen who is doing his duty to excercise his right to criticize his government.

One of the smaller municipalities I worked in inside Houston had a great response time. Three minutes or less from the time of the call. It helped that I had the dispatch number memorized and bypassed 911 for all those calls. Even minor stuff like fraud or shoplifting. Listening to my scanner, there were numerous boring calls that they immediately responded to.

I have actually helped them catch a purse snatcher. I was sitting in my truck on the top floor of the parking garage at my building eating breakfast. I heard a call go out for a BMV about six blocks away. Right after the cop shows up on scene another call goes out from the next house down. Suspicious person seen in garage just stole a bike. Left in unknown direction. Right as the cop is asking for a description, I see this guy riding a bike and carrying a purse on the street below. I called the dispatcher and told her I was a Ham Operator listening to the scanner and saw someone possibly related to the call on XX street. Gave her a description and direction of travel. Another patrol saw the guy on the side of the road and the chase was on. Lasted about twenty minutes and they found the guy hiding in another parking garage a mile away. K-9 1, Bad Guy 0. :neener:

I live in the big city now and don't know about the response time in my neighborhood. I know there are cops that hang out in the Quick Pack store a half mile away, and the neighborhood association has a good repoire with them. Haven't had to call them, and hope I never will. Last call to 911 I made was for a suspicious person attempting to break into a car at a gun range. It was a 45 minute response from the nearest unit. We managed to chase the guy off in the meantime. Didn't wanna shoot the guy and have to spend the rest of my life filling out paperwork.

Ours generally show up after the excitement settles down, take reports, and head back to the donut shop.
...though they advise against personal defensive weaponry, and bring it up in
the Public Government Indoctrination Facilities (eh, public schools) as a 'public service'.

Frostbiker, you may of been writing about West University. In our little town (surrounded by Houston) response times are about three minutes for any type of call. One night when I was out of town, my wife called the fire department to report that she "thought she smelled something burning" - firetrucks and a police car were at the house in 2 minutes. The cops and firemen went through the entire house until they found a toy battery charger that had shorted out. Another time, I called to report a broken window in my car and a cop was there within a few minutes. :)

It's a different story inside the city of Houston. Unless its a priority one call, you'll wait anywhere from 45 minutes to several days. Often the HPD will ask you to come fill out a report at the station instead of having an officer got to the location of the crime. My sister and her roommate were robbed at gunpoint in a parking garage - the dispatcher told them to come down and fill out a report. :cuss:

Fact. 33 minutes. Reason I know? Last week my teenage son called his girlfriend. Her number is 921-xxxx. He dialed 911-xxxx and then hung up. Santa Fe county is supposed to respond to all 911 calls, Exp 911 hang ups. He failed to inform of us htis and it is snowing and we are watching something mindless on TV and there is a knock on the door. Lo and behold there is a Santa Fe count deputy and a NM State Police officer. They ask me if everything is all right I say yes and invite them in out of the snow. I asked what is the problem. They said they got a 911 call from this address. Right off the bat I yelled "BOYS GET IN HERE!!" I told them these officers are here because of a 911 call WHO DID IT!." My oldest said he did and thought by hanging up it would not go thought. They eventually left, but not before me asking what was the time of the call and the dispatch time and TOS.Time of call 1925. time of dispatch 1927, TOS 2000. Makes me feel good and safe that 911 is that close.

Yeah Right

How is this thread related to the mission of the Strategies and Tactics Forum?
I don't see it being on topic at all.
