belligerent neighbor, police intervention

Anyone cranking off magazines in the middle of the night is in need of help.
Yeah a gatling at night sounds like a recipe for disaster. ;)

The LEOs sorted out what sort of help the guy needed without you putting you or your wife's life at risk.

Sounds like you did well, but it is excellent advice to use cover as well as concealment.

Agreed. Truthfully under the circumstances he gave the gold standard response.

Did your neighbor actually break any law?

I have a backstop and shoot in my yard regularly though never late at night.

There is no law against discharging a firearm in my county but there is a noise ordinance in place after 10:00 PM. For example, I had a problem with a neighbor a few Summers back who insisted on running a chain saw at six in the morning. It was disturbing my last hour of sleep and I asked the county law enforcement if anything could be done about it. Of course there is no law against running a chain saw but there is an ordinance against making noise between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM so I was able to get him to stop.

You did fine. Two possible improvements in hindsight: 1) seek heavy cover, like behind a bookcase full of books or in the basement or in a cast iron bathtub (something that might stop a bullet) instead of concealment. 2) one of you should have been armed with a rifle.

And if you can't answer those questions about a neighbor, why can't you?
Maybe it’s different in rural areas, but as a predominantly "city" boy, I have not known my neighbors as more than nodding acquaintances since I was in grade school and I really have no special desire to do so. Maybe that makes me unsocial, but it takes more than simple geographic proximity to make me want to socialize with strangers.

If something like this happened where I live it would be presumed that the neighbor was shooting at a coyote or feral hogs.

Sounds like you did fine for your location.

Thats why I love the farm, a buddy (rich city brat) brought out some gen4 night scopes one night and we had a fantastic time declairing war on my creek bank :)

Never heard a word from anyone. We do our fair share of coon and yote shooting after dark and never have a problem then either:neener:

Yeah, I'd say you did well. Armed yourself but didn't seek confrontation, contacted the authorities and observed the suspect until they arrived. It sounds like you did everything that you could. Too bad about your neighbor, I wonder if he was drunk or angry (or both).... in either case, he wasn't in a good state to be using a firearm. Even if he thought he was shooting into a safe area (which I don't know why he'd think that) this is a good example of someone being totally irresponsible and paying the price. I'm glad nobody got hurt.
