What are you shooting at your next range trip?

Planning to shoot my Bond Arms Derringer with the new barrel that is in shipping right now, a .357 Magnum/.38 Special. I may take .410/.45 Colt barrel along also for more fun. Predicting the .357 Magnum will have a LOT more recoil than the .410 or .45 Colts.

Haven't shot my Mamba in a few months so I'm going to give it a try again. I also want to shoot Rimfire Pistol Iron at Steel Challenge Matches so I'll be testing my 6 inch 617 against my 4 inch, this time with iron sights. The 6 inch has a fiber optic from EGW and an LPA Rear sight. The 4 inch is still stock.

I'll see if I can get a red dot sight working on my Savage "Springfield" 187M Click/Clack.

Well here's the outcome.

Absolute total failure. Mounting the Red Dot turned out to be easier than expected but the function part was disappointing. Took forever to get it aligned and then I found I was far less accurate at 25 yard than with just the iron sights.

So the Red Dot will go to the Box of Shame.

Shooting the old Click/Clack sure was fun though.

I’ve been slacking on my shooting this summer but I’m sure I’ll run 50 or so through my 365xl to keep up on carry shooting.

But the main task will be developing a couple loads in my 6.5 Grendel before hunting season starts

Going shooting tomorrow AM. First outdoor trip since May. I bringing two rifles for sure. Marlin 39A, and Marlin 1894 Cowboy LTD 38/357. I just installed Skinner Peep Sights on both. Handgun, haven't decided yet.

Well, the results are in. I had a terrible match but that's o.k. I managed to shoot all the stages. A lot of shooters decided the weather was too bad and they didn't want to shoot in the rain.

There were puddles almost knee deep on a few stages. Guys had to build platform because people were sinking in the mud. Just laid a few pieces of plywood in the shooting box. No mud but the water was still deep. I sent a few shooters to Walmart to buy waders. It helped.

I'm not discouraged, I'll do better next match. Hopefully the weather won't be a factor. Also I got nervous and didn't shoot near my average. Tried to go too fast and ended up having to fire too many rounds to complete some of my runs.

It really is going to depend on the loads. A full house 357 load with a heavy bullet is quite a thumper, but so is a heavy (non-SAA) load in 45 Colt. Some of the gun writers talk about going up to a 300 gr. bullet at 1200 fps in Rugers or Contenders. Even a 255 gr. load at 1,000 fps is pretty stout, in my opinion. (and that is quite common) Very different recoil impulse though; low pressure vs. high.

My 180 grain cowboy 45LCs are mellow, but I have some 250 grain that a box of 50 made my hand hurt for half a day (shot out the Bond Arms). My stock of .357 ammo is all 158 grain other than a handfull of 125 grain HPs. I would pit the 158 grain .357s against the .250 grain .45LCs.

Thinking I may as well also take the Charter Arms Bulldog .45 LC with me also as it is a lot of fun to shoot.

My bunch have a trip planned for Saturday morning. My new to me 3 screw BlackHawk and new Ruger Wangler will make the trip for sure. The kids will enjoy the wrangler even if it isn't really very accurate and the oldest will enjoy the BK as will grandpa. I might include the fire breathing RIA XTM too. Lotta noise with little recoil. Others are to be decided on.

I have taken the BK to the range once and had to make a pretty large windage adjustment to get it on target. It is slightly more accurate than my new model BK and a rip snorter with full house 357 loads and slick grips. I have Pachmayer rubber grips on the new model and it is slightly less of a snorter with them as it rolls and torques to the left less.

Mark IV 2.jpeg

Pretty much back to basics with my Mark IV 22/45 Lite. It has a Volquartsen Accurizing Kit, a Tandemkross Halo Charging Ring, Allchin Compensator and the stock sights. I've shot thousands of rounds through it and it likes CCI Blazers the most.

Since I've learned that bringing one gun to the range can be dangerous, what if it breaks, I always bring two guns with me.

My second gun is my Smith & Wesson 4 inch Model 617. Basically stock except for replacing the return spring and a little polishing. The front sight has been painted with florescent green paint and it has Hogue's Miculek Grips.

G43X to make sure that my XS sights were installed correctly. It's my EDC so I've reverted back to my M&P Shield backup until it can be verified that the POI matches the installed sight's POA.

G45, because last time out with it it had issues cycling Wolf steel. However it ate every Brown Bear steel I had so I am taking it out and using factory brass cased FMJ and HST's that are my defensive round of choice just make sure that it was Wolf specific and not the gun itself.

And my LR308, last time out with it it would fire only single shot and lock back after each round fired. Problem solving it I found that the Battle Arms LR308 specific bolt catch was having a tolerance issue. Swapped it back to OEM, we're golden. I did swap out the gas rings as they felt worn but still didn't quite fail the gas ring test either. And I changed out the adjustable JP block for a non adjustable SLR. So it has to be function fired to settle my OCD and if that all goes well, some load development will be had too.

I have a Ruger p89 in my safe that I've never fired in almost 2 years. That was partly because of covid and partly because I live an hour away from the state range now. I do occasionally take a walk in the woods around here with one of my smaller guns, usually my Windicator or my Shield, and I do occasionally squeeze off a couple of shots here and there. The gun is a brick to be frank, and I actually would prefer to experiment with it when it's getting cold like now, because then I can conceal under a jacket. I've been thinking about this for a couple of weeks now so it could be any day.

Skipped the 9mm today, ran out of time. Have a couple different powder charges to try now that I’ve settled on a bullet for my 6.5 Grendel so that’ll come out again too.

Hopefully next week

I'm gonna roll up another batch of 38 wadcutters, a batch of 357 Magnums and a batch 38s with light bullets.

Also, I'm gonna roll up my first ever batch of 45 Colt in anticipation of bringing the Cimarron MwNN 45 home.

I haven't even considered the question yet. The wind is supposed to get up enough to make conditions bad starting tonight and continue into next week so there is no use to strain my brain for a time.

I will shoot a .40 S&W BERETTA 96D Vertec and a SIG 395 in 9m.m. I use these pistols for home defense or CCW, so I want to keep familiar with them.

Jim
