Gondorian, it is a Remington 700 for sure. I saw the price tag and saw the name, then looked on the barrel, sure enough Remington Model 700.

I'd like it used

So you can get better than a Stevens used. Search the pawn shops and gun shows and online auctions for used Winchester 70s, Remington 700s, Browning A-bolts, etc., the older the better. Compare prices, learn models, learn what a good deal is and is not, and plunk down your money. Good luck!

If buying new, the T/C Venture looks to be impossible to beat if it really comes in under your price limit.

There are some Remington 700's at dicks around me for $299. Is this a super good deal?

Yes.

Just be sure it's not a 710/770. They are junk. I can't wait until the Marlin XL/XS 7 drives them off the market.

So for the original poster, you should have no problem finding a good used bolt action rifle for under $500, especially this time of year. They will get harder to find as hunting season approaches.

Yea I called my dicks and they said the Remington 700 in .308 is $650 =(

rifles under $500

Stevens 200, butt ugly tack drivers. got a 7mm-08 and .22-250. you have money left for a good scope. the Tikka T3s will cost more than $500, got one in 6.5 x 55 (Tikka T3 lite SS) love it. Weatherby under $500 also good. I hear Marlin makes one too, aint shot one, but heard good things about them.

I haven't been in Dick's many times, but from my experience, it seems aptly named.

For the OP, don't you have any gun shops around? Check pawn shops, too. You don't usually find the good deals at gun shows anymore, but you can still find some great deals at pawn shops. Start looking at all your pawn shops and look for a good rifle in bad shape. A Rem 700, Win 70, whatever, if it's in somewhat rough shape, be assured the pawn shop paid no more than half of what it's marked for. Negotiate hard, and get a rifle that will almost always shoot better than it looks and you can practice your gunsmithing skills. Redo the stock, learn to cold blue, or even learn to rust blue the metal, glass bed it, your call. If you get too nice of a rifle, you might be hesitant to tear into it.

That's also the beauty of Mosins. Just don't get one that's been arsenal refinished and you've got a shooter, or a project, or both...whatever you want to make of it.

I'd either go with a 700 ADL or a Savage 110. Both good rifles. I've had a Remington ADL in .243 for years now, it's a very accurate gun for the price. I bought it at Academy with a Nikon Buckmasters scope for about $650 or so.

I'm not sure what K31s are going for now, but I got mine for $119 a couple years ago. Nice rifle, certainly the most interesting gun I own. Shoots very nice too...

like I said the Stevens 200 are ugly plain gray stock, but a bit of cammo paint or even another stock will make it worthwhile. my 7-08 shot dime groups at 100 yds. after I got it sighted in, some of my hunting buddies shooting high priced guns were really surprised but they may not want to own up to having one. (kind of like the moped story, like riding it, just dont want to be seen riding it).

Lee Enfield No4 Mk1 250$
spend the rest on Ammo

You can get a new rifle, or something with some history attached to it.

A strong +1 for the XL7. I just got one in 30-06 and probably the best single feature is the adjustable trigger. If you make it light enough, that thing makes you instantly a better shot IMO. Also has a pretty comfy recoil pad.

They have new short action models, .308 among them.
