As LA and MS have now declared breechloading exposed hammer single shots of .35 caliber or larger legal in primitive weapons deer season, I am interested in a 35 whelen. i have a scoped handi rifle in 44mag and find that is marginal for 100+ yard shots.

I would like recommendations as H&R, CVA,and perhaps Rossi and Thompson Center(perhaps others) may make a rifle that meets these specs in 35 Whelen. Your thoughts and recommendations are requested.

After review of the ballistics of the 35 whelen, it seems that it would be a good choice with the proper loads for targets at 200+yds. am i correct on this assumption?

My goal is a very accurate scoped 35 Whelan using my reloads for 1 to 2 MOA at 100yds and perhaps 2-4 MOA at 200 yds.

H&R in 35 Whelen has been very popular for just this purpose. Single shot break actions generally prefer a rimmed cartridge, so there have been reports of extraction problems with rimless cases. If the Whelen is a bit punchy in a 6.5 lb rifle, you can get a 30-30 bored out to 35-30/30 for a soft shooting 35 cal rifle, or get a 357 Mag barrel chambered for .356 Win, which is really the king of the medium bores with tremendous flexibility. .356 rather than .358 because the single shot break-actions prefer a rimmed cartridge.

CVA seems to be making some fine single shot rifles that aren't that much more expensive than the Handi Rifle.

T/C are substantially more expensive and seem a bit OTT for what you are after.

Rossi just aren't there yet. Their single shots are still pretty sloppy on quality. They are probably getting better, but the Wizards and such that I have handled are sub par.

I would like to upgrade some from a handi rifle but agree the TC encore and prohunter are definitely a bit over priced at $7-800!!

Can anyone give me feedback on the CVA rifles in 35 whelen? a friend has one in 444, it is a killer on both ends, he has a weatherby eye brow to show for it as well as several deer and hogs, no problems with it mechanically that i know of.

I forgot to add that if your .44 Mag Handi is on a post 1987 SB2 receiver, you're looking at $130 for a new barrel factory fit in 35 Whelen (with shipping). It's very rare indeed that they come up on the GBO calssifieds (Greybeard Outdoors is the home of H&R knowledge on the net) but if one did you could likely fit it yourself (usually just a little filing if it doesn't lock up right away) and be done for even less.

There were initial concerns with the CVA Scout having a slightly soft underlug that was a problem with high pressure rounds like the Whelen, but my understanding is that this was only very early production. I have handled one and while I am a Handi Rifle fan, I think the Scout is a value for money proposition right now that is only going to get more expensive when they have gained share from H&R.

my handi is a SB1 argh!! i didn't know there was any difference when i bought it last year, i surely would have bought an SB2!! i do know about GBO Handi Rifle forum. i learned alot about the little gun from that forum! I may try a CVA in 35 whelen.

i am still in the research phase on this project. trying to learn all I can before i plunk down my cash!!

I appreciate your input.

Anyone have a 35 whelen in a CVA rifle??
