What caliber for spiders?

sorry about your friend

I hate anything that has poison in it and lives. The only real thing i feared on search and rescue missions .

I've shot a spider with a .45 colt before and I couldn't find it afterwards.

I think it would be interesting to see what would happen to a spider with just the blast from a large caliber gun up close.

black widows are nasty but nothing compared to BR. IIRC the worst that can happen with black widow bites are nausea fever and being sick to your stomach.

BRs melt your flesh. yikes.

Ah, finally that class in medical entomology becomes useful.

Widow venom is neurotoxic. It has systemic effects.
("Muscle and chest pain or tightness are some of
the most common reactions to the widow toxin.")

Recluse venom is hemolytic: it dissolves blood cells
and epithelial tissues (covering/lining) at the site of the byte.

The latter effects are what cause tissues
to undergo necrosis: they just fall off.

In that article on necrosis, see "Arachnogenic necrosis".
"Arachnogenic" means "generated by spiders".

I use an airgun, two pumps point blank and the air pressure is enough to tear them apart with no marks left on the wall. I don't bother with spiders though, the only ones around here are the daddy long-legs. I do take care of the house centipedes, though. Those suckers aren't fun to get bit by. That and just thinking of them makes me itchy all over.

After putting my fingers on the door (fingers under then pull up) opener on my truck several times and having a spider jump out I now bang it a couple of times before I open the door.

hmm for spiders? I think some of those CCI shotshells at close range out to wipe a spider out pretty well. Even a tarantula ought to be dead if shot at from point blank range with a pistol shotshell.

Killing a brown recluse with a firearm causes too much collateral damage. Use a slipper or rolled up newspaper instead.

Ammo is expensive. I use Bug Spray.

See? Bug Spray:

James Bond and spiders

I think Bond only had one run-in with a spider: in "Dr. No," one of the Doctor's henchmen was given an ostensibly poisonous tarantula by No, and planted it in Bond's room. While Bond was sleeping, the spider crept up his bed under the sheets and ended up climbing across his chest and shoulder (actually a very funny scene; you can see the pane of glass separating Connery from the spider). Bond keeps his cool, flings the spider onto the floor next to him, and gives it the business with the butt of his Walther PPK.

In "Live and Let Die," Bond uses a can of spray after shave (after shave!?!?), lit by the burning end of a cigar, to dispatch an ostensibly poisonous snake.

Now, a burning bottle of cognac thrown at a spider in "Arachnophobia,"...well, the less said about those spiders the better.

I always hear from people who try to avoid going to the doctor.

It's just asking for trouble. I know better than anyone how doctors can go overboard, but I still have enough sense to know when I HAVE to go to the ER or see a doctor ASAP.

As for caliber for a spider....... I have dealt with a venemous spider using a .22lr shotshell. It happened to be positioned so that I could shoot towards the ground. The thing was massive, like half the size of my hand.

I thought about it afterwards and decided, - sure it worked - but it wasn't the smartest way to go. Now I just use spray. Foggers to be exact.... I just hold them under the spider and hold my breath. They die pretty quickly after they get a film of that stuff around them. Then I flip the fogger off, walk away and breathe.

This thread creeps the hell out of me. I feel like they're on me
Amazing how one can be fooled into thinking that it's just a soft breeze stirring the hairs on the back of your neck... ;)

Balled piece of paper from airgun, works great on flies too out to a few feet and poses little risk of damage to most surfaces.
A piece of balled paper fired at 600-1000 FPS splats them great. It will also go through a cardboard box from the same distance, so careful near blinds, flat screens etc

Who needs a fly swatter?

12 gauge.

Getting bit by a BR is something I hope I never have to endure. I had to go get a drink after reading this thread.

We have the Brown Recluse here, and I always check the boxes from the attic before I unload for Christmas, Halloween, etc. Doesn't make sense to put your hand where a spider doesn't think it belongs. I got bit bad by a large orb weaver years ago. It was under the arm of my front porch chair. Evidently, it came out and bit me on the side of my right hand. I let out a howl and the cowardly bastidge scurried across the porch. My next door neighbor asked, "Did that thing just bite you?" I was over the porch rail in a hurry, eager to not let this terrorist escape. I found him cowering in a corner of the porch and ground. My size 13 crushed and buried him in one swift motion. I heard the satisfying crunch, he was so damn big. Not a recluse, but one of those fat-assed things that spin the beautiful orbs that I like to set on fire. It left a golf-ball sized lump that itched like hell for the next 3 or 4 days.

My best friend lives in the Cali desert, and he has all the big 3, brown recluse, black widow, and tarantula. While we were visiting this past June, A black widow tried to take a bit out of me via pool float. Evidently they like to spend time in the little holes in the side of his pool. Call me a sis if you want, but I spent a lot of time turning over floats and looking in holes.
