In fact, that's what I actually have right now, those five plus one wheelgun in .38 Special. And the .40 was only added late last year. It would be a tossup between .38 and .22 LR, I really don't use either one much.
.22lr - gives a lot of flexibility; handguns and rifles in both semiauto and manual
.223 - bolt & semiauto rifles
9mm - revolvers, semiauto pistols & rifles
.357mag - hand guns and rifles
20ga - a lot of variety of rounds from shot to slug and manual to semiauto.
All of those give me a ton of options & flexibility from young to old, from manual actions to semiautos, from hand guns to long guns, from close to fairly far, from small to fairly large, from fur to feathers, from 2 legged to 4 legged, and commonly available ammo
Swapping the .223 to something heavier would be the 1st consideration if needed.
5 is a little thin.
17 hmr, 357, 22-250, 12 ga, and 300 win mag.
I'm not a 300 win mag fan. But it sure does cover a lot of usage.
22-250 is the 300 win mag of the 22s.
17 hmr works much better than 22 lr for hunting and predator control.
357 is very capable as a timer country deer gun in a carbine while being an excellent defensive round in a revolver.
12 ga needs no explaining.
Like most people on this forum, I have way more than 5 calibers in my collection. I wrote each caliber down and this would have to be my pick
.303 british
.357 Magnum
45 ACP
7.62x39
22LR
The AK ammo is because it's cheaper right now than .223. 45 over 9mm because I have more than fire 45 than 9mm. .357 Magnum because I'm too much a revolver guy to ignore it's merits.
Interesting thread. I would hate to give up my .380 but it is one of three marginal calibers I possess. The others are .25 ACP abd .32 ACP.
What I would keep are:
.22LR/Mag
.357
12 gauge
7.62 x 39
and .243.
The first two do "double duty" as I have both handguns and rifles in those two calibers.
(Side note: Though 9mm is plentiful and common, 9mm Largo is still very pleasant to shoot, and if I could find more factory loads vs. reloading, I would definitely go that route.)
The last time I was limited to 5 calibers was before I bought my 6th and I don’t see myself going backwards.
If I am ever eating from a tube shoved down my throat and someone has to wash my backside when I poop, I hope the last thing they would think of selling would be one of my treasured .22’s.
1. 357/38 rifles & handguns very versatile
2. 22LR rifles & handguns
3. .308 Win Bolt & Semi Rifles
4. 12ga Hunting & self defense
5. 45-70 Because I like the rifles I have in this chambering.
Hard choice between the 45-70 and 30-30. I cast and reload for both. But 45-70 wins if I have to choose between them.
I'll miss a lot of the others I enjoy shooting but if forced to choose these are the 5 I would keep.
