What can I use for an inexpensive shotgun LED light & mount?

In my younger years I used duct tape to hold a light on a shotgun for pest eradication. It was a 20 ga, but the light stayed in place and worked as intended. Laugh all you want, but it is a cheap solution that worked. It wasn't an LED, but the flashlight I was using probably wasn't more than $20. It lasted at least 3 shots, which was all we needed. Flashlight was still fine after that, but no idea how long it would have actually made it.

For your first shot, you could use a handheld flashlight to identify the target and rest the forearm on the top of your wrist. I've dumped 8 rounds from the mag tube using this method at a low light course with a semi-auto . . . not sure how you would transition to pumping the action though. If you go this route make sure you practice, the recoil feels different when you don't have a hand on the front of the gun.

I use something very similar to this on my 870

Mine is older and made of steel. The sling mount swivel is a nice feature too. As for the light I have one of these:

Not the greatest but it is bright enough to shoot skunks around the woodpile and has held up through a few dozen slugs. And it was only $8. I had hoped the laser pointer could be a useful for aiming...but it aint.

The whole rig is really cheap (like less than $20) and has worked great so far. YMMV.

I'm actually going to build my light from components and I figure the light, LED of choice, battery, charger, and tail switch will be delivered to my door for under $40.00.

A simpler solution would be a SolarForce L2, with a single mode LED, 2X 18650 Lithium batterys and charger for $50.00 delivered.

This is a VERY GOOD SF 6P clone, except it runs on 1 lithium battery, (4.2v) not 2X CR123's, (6v), (that's better).

Tail switches, different LED configurations, etc., are available, and inexpensive too.

Follow the link and look around. E-mail me if you have questions.

This should leave you plenty of money left over to decide on your light mount.

Good Luck.

p.s. Don't be a sucker, you can't buy a game, money won't buy excellence, throwing cash at a problem just leaves expensive fixes.

The light on my AR-15, including mount and tail switch cost about $25.00 DELIVERED, and I'm very pleased.

You may want to rethink your strategy for home defense. A few well placed $2 LED night lights located strategically in the house and you don't need a flashlight on your shotgun.

99% of tactical firearm accessories are sold to civilians based on fantasies inspired by TV and movies.

If money's tight, my advice is save it for something you really need and will use rather than succumb to the pressures of the "tactical" market to look "bad".

Many, many moons ago I used to use a AA Maglight on a barrel clamp with a pressure switch. I used that shotgun recreationally for a few years and never busted a bulb. Probably about 2,000 rounds during that time period (I always had multiple guns to keep me entertained). Such a setup *could* work but it could also fail prematurely, depending on what day of the week your flashlight was made.

In the current market, I would probably get a Brinkmann ArmorMax and a barrel clamp. You'll get a bright light with tail cap activation that should be plenty durable enough for casual use. Mount it up with a cheap barrel/mag tube clamp and call it a day.

Personally, I use a Streamlight TLR-1 on my bedside pistol and Surefires on my long guns.
