I found an auction for a S&W TSW 40. I purchased it due to what I think is a great price, but I can't figure out which model it is (seller is on vacation until tomorrow) It looks like a 4013 but has double stack mags. Most other models I find have longer 4" barrels. Look like a brother gun to my 3913. Anyone know what this is? Shorty forty????

Help!!!

This is driving me nuts. It looks like the Smith & Wesson, Model 4053 TSW but not in double action only. Can someone enlighten a man.

Looks like a 4046 frame with the slide off a 4006 tactical. Every stock S&W with the tactical lettering that I have seen has a rail on the slide. It should work just fine since the they are basically the same gun.

That certainly blows my theory of all tacticals having a rail. S&W had a million model numbers for all the different permutations they offered during that time period so it's pretty confusing. I've got a 4046 and a 5906 that are both dead reliable and great shooters so I'd bet it will be worth what you paid for it no matter what it ends up being.

Those are nice guns. Good price too. I am not sure of the exact model, but their Tactical line of pistols were top of the line stuff at the time. :)

Sad

It's kind of sad the seller didn't put down the model number. I was hoping it was an first gen shorty forty.... those are pretty big bucks.

It's a pre-rail 4013TSW. I have one just like it. Exceptional pistols. The mags are confusing though. They appear to be standard 4006 series 11 round mags (which are about a quarter inch too long - they fit, but stick out and leave a gap). Correct magazines for this weapon will be double stack 9 rounders with pinky extensions. You can get spacers for 11 rounders to fill the aforementioned gap. This design started with the Performance Center "Shorty Forty" and was later put into regular production as the 4013TSW. It uses the same mags as the Shorty Forty. Still later a rather unsightly equipment rail was added (riveted to the frame actually). These are exceptional values when found in good condition. The frames are aluminum alloy and sometimes don't fare well in police holsters. When they were still in production, street prices on new ones were in the $700 range.

Thanks

That is the correct answer per the dealer. Now I have a 3913 and a 4013. Now time to shop holsters. Thanks guys.
