What do you do with ammo that has no home?

By home I am referring to a weapon that shoots it. For obvious reasons this is not open to those who have 15 handguns that all shoot .40S&W and 5 different .308 rifles.

I have some 7.62x39 ammo that I bought for range time with a friend's Chinese NHM-91. I moved 1500 miles away so there is no chance of shooting in that again. This week I sold my wife's .327 magnum revolver and have some ammo left over. So what does everyone do with the surplus ammo? Sell it to a friend, break it down to components?
 
Keep it for trade, save it for when you eventually do get a firearm that uses it?

I just recently got some 7.62x54r surplus ammo that I plan to keep, don't currently have a firearm that uses it but I plan to buy some C&R's that do. 91/30 for example.
 
Depends on details, if less than a box I would find someone to give it away to if I never planned to have something in that caliber again. Larger quantities and I would say sell / trade it for something that is more useful to you.
 
i trade with a friend who has over stock of something i want or i will give it away since they actually are a "friend".
 
Look at it as a sign.

I was at a range and found some .22 Hornet brass. I knew God wanted me to have a .22 Hornet.

Another time, I found some .45 Colt brass. I knew God wanted me to have a .45 Colt.

I found some .30-40 Krag brass. I knew God wanted me to have a .30-40 Krag.

I found some 9mm brass and I knew the Devil is a deciever.:evil:
 
What they said, with the addition of "use the ammo as an excuse to start looking at firearms in that chambering". I have a few boxes of 9mm fmj and now find myself contemplating 9mm carbines. Otherwise I might just try to trade it off for ammo I can actually use.

Personally I believe in only having one caliber for a particular use. Why carry 9mm in one pistol and .40 in another? The single exception for that is if there's a specific reason (i.e. I own one .380 and I won't get rid of it until I can get a 9 that fits in any pocket as easily). Because all of my weapons have a similar use, I don't need multiple calibers.

But I have some .45 ammo from a range trip that I can't use in rental guns...

That's how I ended up with ANOTHER .22....then another.....and another....then another....

I felt that one little rifle couldn't shoot all that ammo :)

Every gun shop I've ever dealt with has said that liability keeps them from taking purchased ammo on trade. Many, however, will sell old surplus ammo in tattered old boxes...
 
I'd also say trade or give to a friend.

And Vern, maybe God just wanted you to finally see the light:D
 
I have a bunch of ammo in cartridges that I don't own firearms for. EVERY time I give it to a friend or sell it, I regret it (because I end up buying a gun in that chambering).

That being said, I usually take my "odd" ammo when I shoot with friends and give it to them as a "thank you" for time on their guns in that chambering. I have a friend I'm going to give a bunch of .308 TAP to because I don't have a .308 and he's done me some favors. Of course once I give it to him, I'll come across a great deal on a .308...
 
Been trying to sort ammunition lately. I seem to have a bunch (a few hundred rounds easy) of 9mm. Aside from 9mm guns I bought and sold in the business I have never and likely will never own a 9mm. I have in in cans and next time I see my brother it will be his.

I generally just give stuff like that away to people who in turn give me stuff they may have no use for but I do.

Ingenious! I need to keep this one in my back pocket. Might come in handy with the wife when she screams 'What the #@$@%@%!$$&' did you do spending all that money at gun/ammo store?'
 
i store my 'odd' calibers in a ammo can thats on a shelf in the garage by the rear of my car.
when i leave for the range i take it with me. mine is a friendly range and most of us like to play with each others stuff. so i have ammo to shoot or trade or just give away.
 
I just hang on to it. I keep all the "leftovers" in an ammo can so as to have them all in one place.

Now that I think about it I believe I still have 100 rounds of .30 Carbine and a couple of boxes of .38S&W stashed away as well. Haven't had a gun for either cartridge in probably 30 years. Could be as good a reason as any to start looking for an M1 Carbine and a Webley Mark 4 to use them in.
 
7.62 x 39 ammo

I would love to have it. It has gotten very hard to find and many online sources are back ordered. One thing for sure, it will not go down in value. I say,sore it well and hang on to it. You'll be glad you did when your favorite round goes sky high or nearly impossible to get.
 
Keep it. You never know if you might get something that'll shoot it later. I still have several boxes of .45ACP, 6.5x55, and 7.62x39 left over from guns that I've divested myself of, but I see no reason to get rid of it.
 
Depending on where you live, you might be able to consign the stuff or trade at your LGS. I know mine does that, I had a .243 that I never could get to work right, I was able to trade my leftover ammo for about 75% off 308 ammo. I figured that was a pretty decent trade in my book. LGS made a few bucks, I got a deal on ammo I could use.
 
I ran across a box of old 25-35 ammo of my grandfathers a few weeks ago. I found a guy on this board to give it to.
 
It depends on the quantity. I once found myself with a box of .44 Magnum and nothing to shoot it in. I gave it to a friend. In another case, I had a couple hundred rounds of .45 ACP. I sold that to a relative, but at a discount.
 
I got rid of all my 45's but still have 500+ rounds of 45ACP left. Who knows, maybe save it for a rainy day, sell it, or buy another 1911. Of course, y'all know which I am leaning toward, eh? :)
