I've been in the health care field for 22+ years, 14 of them as a RN.....and I'm a heck of alot more fearful of a slow, lingering, debilitated end than I am of any knife or gun.:uhoh:

I've seen an awful lot of injuries caused by both gunshot and knife wound - and knives scare me a whole lot more than guns! A gun will typically make a nice round hole, and unless it hits something really important, you've got a pretty good chance of surviving without long-term damage. A knife can cut and slash its way through organs, blood vessels, ligaments and tendons, etc. There's a much higher possibility of permanent damage - or death from blood loss - if you're carved up by someone who knows what he's doing.

Working in a prison as I do, over the past couple of years I've seen plenty of knife wounds (and helped to stop more than one knife attack). Untrained users typically stab wildly, and the results, while messy, are usually survivable. However, when the operator knows what he's doing, even with a homemade shank without much cutting/stabbing power, the victim is more often than not in a whole heap of trouble. It's also remarkably quick - no more than a few stabs, over a few seconds, can kill or disable very effectively.

I was told by a trained knife fighter that his goal wasn't to shank you and do you in with one thrust. His goal was to cut you here and there to bleed you till you lost consciousness and then do you in.

I've been stabbed and slashed, and, well, it wasn't fun. I imagine that getting shot isn't exactly a picnic, either.

Kinda surprised how knives are in such a clear majority.

I've had a knife held to my throat once before- not a postion I ever want to be in again- really not much you can do defensively once you are in that position. :(

A gunshot to the chest I have probably even odds of surviving, but having a big smile put on my neck is pretty much curtains.

Great! Now I am sure the brady bunch will read this poll and we will have new laws regarding how many knives one can own, how large, of course no pastic zytel handles because of their assault weapon similarity.

This along with the sure to come assault rope ban and we are screwed!

Seriously though, I fear knives more. No such thing as a high capacity or standard capacity knife, so any whacko can just keep stabbing away, and thanks to the Brady Bunch, my SigPro only has ten shots to defend myself with...while the whacko has unlimited attempts to stab at me.

Where is the logic....

knife -- hands down.

That scene from Saving Private Ryan,,, where the guy takes it in the heart,,,{{{{shudder}}}} - that still gives me the willies.

Knife wounds

I agree with Preacherman.
Having worked in a Main OR once upon a time...seen the knife wounds and compared to gunshot wounds...well placement is important with both.

Seen the .22 short kill and the person survive multple larger caliber hits. A Basic kitchen knife is a real dangerous, effective weapon...don't discount what a broken bottle or glass will do either...

Guys, I have to differ with the majority here, I think you are way off base.

The mortality rate for gunshot wounds is higher than it is for stab wounds. Risk of permanent disability is higher as well.

A knife wound may be bloodier and more impressive visually than a GSW, but it is certainly less lethal.

I have seen very very few patients die from knife related injuries.

I fear neither, they are lifeless objects. If I were afraid of anything, it would be the person behind the tool. However, I'd rather go against a knife than a firearm. Knife wounds are nasty and so on but it lacks the range of a firearm. And you can't block a bullet.

To paraphrase from Cryptonomicon...

War correspondent: So, Sergeant, do you have any advise for new marines?

Sgt Bobby Shaftoe: Yeah. Shoot the ones with swords first.

Correspondent: Oh, I get it. You shoot the ones with swords first because they're the officers, right?

Shaftoe: No! You shoot them because they have ----ing swords! Have you seen what a ----ing sword'll do to a guy?

Assuming the question is more like :

What would you rather have to deal with , a BG with a knife , or a BG with a gun ? I would rather they bring a knife to my gunfight .

:D

If someone pulled a gun on me, I wouldnt stand a chanse, but the threshold for shooting and killing someone is higher than slashing and wounding someone.
If someone pulled a knife on me, I would atleast have a chanse.
4 years of training Kali Sikaran (Martial Art with knives, kickboxing, pretty much every weapon) has to count for something.
And if someone pulled a knife on me, I'd pull my own. I wouldnt be too worried if that happened, If they havent trained for it, I guess its 75% chanse I'll win the knifefight.

What do I fear more? Not guns or knives, but SPIDERS!

"Look out! He's got an anachroid!"

Hehe; I voted knives. As I agree; the perp is the hazard and if I'm faced with a murderer or whatever, I'd prefer the fcker has a gun over a knife. It is by any means the most humane thing! :p

I kind of figured y'all would say you fear the guy holding the knife or gun more. That's why the guy holding it wasn't an option. I just wanted to see if you'd rather face a knife or a gun.

I fear neither, but the person behind them. I don't know what I would rather face if I had to face one of them. Knives are more close range and I do have a good chance to run away from someone with a knife whereas I can't run from a bullet, but it's hard to hit a moving target when shooting.

I'm not sure yet I fear most, but just wanted to see what y'all thought. Thanks.
