What Do you Think of My Trade?

I have a friend with an FFL who may be willing to trade a new Bushmaster AR for my Century Arms M1 Garand. I have wanted an AR, but I enjoy my Garand too.

One of the things that is going into my decision is that I have been told that I may only safely shoot mil-surplus ammo in my Garand...because of the pressures being too high on available commercial ammo.

What I would really like to own is a semi-auto 30.06 that shoots as effortlessly and accurately as my Garand!

What are your thoughts?
David

Get one of those adjustable gas plugs. They allow you to control the operating pressure and shoot commercial ammo without damaging the op-rod.

Its possible that your garand is worth more than the Ar he wants to trade you.

If it's a Century Garand it's probably South Korean surplus. Unlike the CMP, Century and Blue Sky aren't known for checking out the internals on the Korean Garands, so there's no telling what's in it. I'd still not trade the Garand for an AR at this point. I'd do some research and find out who the top Garand gunsmiths are. Send it to one of them and have him go through the rifle while he's doing the gas system work.

If the barrel on the Garand is in excellent condition, keep it. Is it an import
stamped on the barrel? All the parts with the exception of the gas
cyclinder and operating rod are inter changeable. As they become scarce,
the prices will climb !!! Agree if you wish to shoot heavy bullets with
slow burning powder, adjustable gas plug is the way to go. GI specs
with 150 to 172 grain bullets, I would not worry about. A Garand in good
to excellent condition would be higher priced than that Bushy new. Stock
up on that CMP Greek ammo (30-06) as it is cheaper than ammo for that
.223, at about $.30 a round. I own a Bushy, but my Garands are the to go
rifles, as I feel they out perform most in many ways:D

I'd do it and then order a "new" CMP garand.
you'll make out big time.

i wouldn't want anything from century in my gun cabinent.

My Century Arms Garand appears to be one that was put together from parts, never really issued. The reciever is Century arms, the barrel is a very good Beretta barrel, It shoots well, but will never be worth anything as a collector, only as a shooter. I really like the idea of the adjustable gas valve, as I would love to use this round on pigs, I just need a good hunting bullet chambered to use safely (I don't mind the weight of the gun). I already load several 30.06 rounds for my son to use, and that gas valve will let me use the same rounds that I load for him...It sounds like the best of solutions for my use at this time.

You'd be ripping your friend off in the trade:evil:
Some of the Century M1s work very well and shoot well, but are normally considered to be worth their value in parts sans receiver. With Bushmasters running $750-900+, the M1 is worth 1/2 as much if not less.

Trade for the AR, and trade the AR for a GI M1 if you want to have a M1.

the CAI M-1 receivers are of poor quality, a trade for an AR is a no-brainer.

I seriously doubt your friend would be interested in a CIA parts rifle for the 750-900 bucks a new Bushy AR represents.

Have someone who knows what they're looking at tear down that rifle and review the S/N'd parts & stock to see excatly what you have there. I'd be willing to wager your friend has recognized a correct or near correct rifle and is looking to get it from you at what amounts to a substantial discount.

A 'correct' gun put together from parts by century monkeys?:scrutiny:

If both guns are in good shape and function properly ... I'd take the AR and not look back. If you decide you want a M1 Garand, then go CMP ...
