What does my gun collection need next?

Remington 870 express 7 shot synthetic 12 gauge shotgun 18"
Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge shotgun 26" (25 yrs old)
Beretta A391 Xtrema2 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun 24"

Springfield M1A 7.62x51mm Semi Automatic Rifle
Marlin 795 .22lr rifle

Smith & Wesson M&P .40 semi-automatic pistol


I'm looking to build my collection and can't decide between these choices. I mostly do target shooting/plinking, very occasional hunting and have a CHL on the way. What would you get next?

Of course I said 1911 I'm an addict. But out of these choices the wheelgun might not have been a bad call. I think everyone needs a 1911 and a Wheelie.

Yeah, I wanted to edit the poll to put ar-15 in there, but I originally didn't include it because I think I'd like to have a bolt action in the same caliber as my M1A as my second rifle since I already have a semi-auto (with lots of .308 ammo).

As far as use, like I said earlier, I participate in target/plinking/range shooting, occasional hunting, concealed carry, defensive handgun/longun courses, etc.

I'd get a genuine Colt Government Model, and/or a S&W K, L, or N frame 4" .357. Keep your eye out for all of the above, then get the one in best condition that comes along at the best price.

I'd say a 4" 357 your choice of manufacturer. Probably the best all around handgun. J frame 357s are best used with +P or +P+ ammo.

If you get a .357 Magnum revolver, you will then have what most would consider to be a well-rounded collection of guns.

Each of your existing guns serve a specific purpose, although you do not currently have a large bore revolver. A nice .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum revolver would give you something a little more stout to carry as a sidearm while hunting - and you will be able to enjoy the unique simplicity and efficacy of the revolver.

Also, as you gain experience as a revolver shooter, your mastery of safe gun ownership and shooting philosophy will be more well-rounded, and therefore your advice and opinion will be more relevant and useful to your peers and especially to new shooters you might meet.

I love my 1911 too, and I love my rifles and shotguns as well - but I wouldn't want to be without a revolver.

What you probably don't need is a shotgun.

I would have voted for the 1911 except for the .40 addendum. Why on earth do you want one in .40??? At any rate, since you have no revolvers, and this is a truly sorrowful condition in which to live, that's where I'd go next. But I'd look around for others than the one you've chosen...including some of the classic .38's and/or .357's.

Then get a 1911. In .45acp, for heaven's sake.

All right, before I get too much heat for putting the 1911 in .40 up there I shoud mention that I have about 2000 rounds of the stuff sitting around. Looks like .22LR pistol is in the lead at this point.

A big part of my choices are based on what will shoot ammo that I already have. Of the 4 choices only the revolver would require new ammo, but i see myself getting into .357 rimfires eventually anyway.

I suggest a Ruger 357. either sp 101, or security six for carry. I got the gp 100 knowing I would not be carrying the peice other than side holstered. Must say, A SUPER SHOOTER! 38's used to be cheap and are great for targets, And if you look at a smith wheeler next to a Ruger you'll notice the top strap is twice as thick on the Ruger. All in all a wheel gun is a must have in any collection.

with the options that you have i say go for the bolt gun and here is why.
.22 pistols are nice but they are inexpensive and you can add that anytime.

the revolver would be good, but i personally would go with a j frame if i had your collection, a good pocket gun for quick trips to the store etc. not a 340.

the 1911 would be a good choice, but i am not a fan of 1911's in any caliber but .45acp, mags are gonna be hard to find, as well reliability can be iffy.

i voted for the 1911, but a 1911 is supposed to be 45acp only in my opinion.

i picked the 1911 because you already have really nice scatterguns, a good 22 rifle, and a nice plastic pistol (they are better than the other plastic pistols in my opinion). you also have one of the finest centerfire rifles ever made (being derived from the king of all rifles, the m1 garand).

to me its an easy choice, but then again, i think if a person can only own one pistol in his or her entire life, it should be a 1911. (but definitly in 45acp)

I voted for a .22lr, everyone needs at least one for cheap practice.
You also need a 1911 in .45acp and a .357 revolver, these are cornerstones to any good collection.
Theirs others that need to be added to round out your collection but these are the essentials.

DEFINITELY a revolver. But my choice isn't in the poll. My vote goes to the Ruger sp101. NO collection is complete without a revolver or two or three.....Follow the revolver purchase with a lever action rifle of the same caliber.
